Volbeat's first appearance was in the Camp Pikachu special that was part of the Pokémon Heroes movie. It served as a sort of camp counselor and guide.

Its first show appearance was in AG042 along side its female counterpart Illumise.

It appeared again in AG080 owned by a man named Volt in a PokéRinger Contest.

Its most recent appearance was in AG157. Kuni mentions how Volbeat and Illumise use to do their mating dance in a large tree that use to be located in the middle of the city.

Sapphire Volbeat's tail glows like a lightbulb. With other Volbeat, it uses its tail to draw geometric shapes in the night sky. This Pokémon loves the sweet aroma given off by Illumise.
Emerald With their taillights lit, Volbeat fly in a swarm, drawing geometric designs in the night sky. They move their nests if their pond water becomes dirty.
FireRed It lives around clean ponds. At night, its rear lights up. It converses with others by flashing its light.

There have been two evolution issues with Volbeat. One is its partnership with Illumise, that it was believed to evolve into it. Another was Kricketot, which shared such a resemblence to Volbeat that it was thought to evolve into it.

Origin

Volbeat appears to be based on a firefly.

Name origin

Volbeat's name is a combination of volt, referring to its electrical powers, and beetle. Its Japanese name is a possible combination of バルブ barubu, meaning bulb, and beetle
