As a new user, you may wish to learn a few things that will be useful in your editing:

• For a basic overview of wiki code, see this page.
• The manual of style is very important. Make sure to read it. It outlines all official policies of Bulbapedia.
• The word Pokémon is spelled with a capital P and an accented é. The P, of course, is accessed easily by holding Shift and pressing the P key, while the é can be accessed using Alt + 130 or Alt + 0233 on a Windows computer, and Option + e, then e again on a Mac. Otherwise, you can click it in the character palette below the editbox.
• The word Poké Ball is spelled as two words. The "Poké" part is identical to the four beginning letters in "Pokémon"; "Ball" is spelled with a captial B (which is, again, accessed by holding Shift and pressing the B key). The spelling "Pokéball" arises frequently, but is incorrect.
• The word "you" and all forms of it should not be used on encyclopedic pages unless it is a quote from Pokémon media. Bulbapedia is an encyclopedia, not a walkthrough.
• On talk pages, please sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
• The use of link templates is official policy. For an explanation on their use, see the page on shortlinks.
• If you happen to spot a vandal in the recent changes that has not been dealt with, please see this page for how to deal with it.
• A list of pages that are linked to, but have not been created, can be found at this page. A list of short articles that may require more information can be found here, while a list of articles that need improvement can be found here.
• If you want to make a page about a character you made up, please create it at User:Aura-Knight/(name), not merely (name). Bulbapedia's main namespace is reserved for actual, official Pokémon, items, characters, and locations. Also, please try to make sure that subpages are not categorized by templates used within.

Almia

I wanted to check with you before I changed anything, but where was it said that Almia and Sinnoh are connected and that Almia is south of Lake Verity?

Type

Don't write out something like [[Dragon-type]], as that links to a redirect. We have a link template for that, so write {{type2|Dragon}} instead. It'll get you the same thing. --Martonimos_{((Argh|Blargh))} 20:21, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Link Templates

Please use link templates when linking to stuff such as Pokémon names, attacks, and the like. For example, {{a|Rough Skin}} instead of just [[Rough Skin]]. This is so you don't unintentionally link to a disambiguation page.

Handheld system

The following is a reply to your comment that "Gold and silver were planned for the Game Boy and there's no sign of a DS successor in sight for at least another three years, by which we'll likely be in a new region.":

A few months ago, it would have been somewhat acceptable to claim that Generation V could be released for the DS. Now, however, after no new Pokémon have debuted in the latest movie, it is clear that Generation IV will be longer than its predecessors, rather than shorter. It might be hard to fathom that it will take another three years until the next generation is launched (seeing as Nintendo has said that the DS successor will only be released in 2011), but that is exactly the impression that has been created.

Allow me to clarify: According to Nintendo's reports, the DS will not be replaced until 2011. If Generation V were released for the DS, it would be first announced next year and released in 2010. By that time, the DS successor would be announced, and so the Pokémon enthusiasts would be demotivated to buy that new platform upon its release in 2011. The third game could be released thereafter for the newest platform, but that would necessarily remove battle compatibility with the main versions of the generation. It would be terrible for Nintendo, if to put it mildly.

You might for some reason say that it could be released next year, but that possibility has already been eliminated due to the continued focus on Generation IV and the lack of new Pokémon buzz. Besides which, the improved technology introduced in a new handheld system is the bread and butter of a new Pokémon generation. There seems to be a misconception that new Pokémon and regions serve that role, but those have long ceased to be re-defining or even innovative. It cannot be overstated that had it not been for the DS, Diamond and Pearl would have barely stood out from Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed and LeafGreen; they would simply not have warranted the use of the term "Generation IV".

In conclusion, the pattern whereby a new generation is released for a new handheld system, is well worth stating on the relevant page. --Unown Lord
