Typhlosion (Japanese: バクフーン Bakphoon) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon introduced in Generation II. Known as the Volcano Pokémon, it is the final form of Johto's Fire-type starter Pokémon, Cyndaquil, evolving from Quilava at level 36.

Biology and appearance

Typhlosion is a tall, bipedal Pokémon, standing at just about the average height of a human adult. It will, however, go into a bipedal position if it is in a hurry or in battle, focusing its agility. Releasing flames from the red spots on the back of its neck, it charges into battle, using the heat it generates to create mirages to hide itself and distort the vision of its opponents. If enraged, a Typhlosion's body temperature can rise so high that anything it touches will instantaneously burst into flame. When not enraged, however, a Typhlosion can still rub its fur together to cause a massive explosion.

In the main series

Typhlosion first became available in the Generation II games, evolving from the Cyndaquil that is given away as a starter Pokémon by Professor Elm to accompany the player on his or her way to Mr. Pokémon's house on the north end of Route 30. It is unavailable in the wild, as is the case with most fully-evolved Pokémon, and must instead be evolved from a Quilava. Typhlosion are, through evolution, readily available only to players of Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, where Cyndaquil can be chosen as a starter, as well as Pokémon Colosseum, where a Shadow Quilava can be snagged from Cipher Peon Rosso at the eastern entrance to Phenac City. They can also be obtained without trading in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness and Pokémon Emerald, however, the means to do so are much more difficult and late in the game's storyline.

In the anime

Typhlosion first appeared in the anime in the long special episode The Legend of Thunder, under the ownership of Jimmy. He obtained his Typhlosion from Professor Elm in New Bark Town as a Cyndaquil, his chosen starter Pokémon.

Typhlosion would not appear in the main anime until Gonna Rule the School, where it cameoed in a battle against a Feraligatr. Another member of the species appeared under the ownership of Mr. Moore, the grandfather of Lavaridge Gym Leader Flannery, in Poetry Commotion.

In the TCG

Main article: Typhlosion (TCG)

Typhlosion debuted in the TCG in the Neo Genesis expansion, where it was featured in two cards: one was packaged as part of a nine-card preview binder in Japan and became part of the main expansion when translated, while another was featured in the expansion itself. Typhlosion cards typically appear in expansions with a Johto theme to them, always alongside its evolutionary family, and usually alongside the evolution families of the other two Johto starters.

Trivia

Origin

The appearance of this Pokémon is based on a badger or wolverine.

Name origin

Typhlosion's name is a combination of typhoon and explosion. Its name is also similar to the word typhus, a Greek word meaning 'hazy' (which would describe the effect that the intense heat Typhlosion generates has on the air surrounding it), and may also be related to tephra, volcanic material. The name is also similar to the word "typhlosaurus", a genus of skink (a kind of lizard) characterised by their lack of legs. The first three syllables of its Japanese name spell 爆風 bakufū, blast, and the second part comes directly from typhoon.
