Zygarde has not made any appearance in the anime to date.
Zygarde made its debut appearance in the anime in Mega Evolution Special IV and From A to Z! in its 50%, Core, and 10% forms. It was being sought after by Team Flare, and appeared as two different Zygarde Cores, one red and another blue. A Red Zygarde Core was experimented on by Team Flare, but escaped with the help of Mairin's Chespin. It was discovered by Bonnie and spend a long time under Ash and co's care, being referred to as Squishy. When it faced Team Flare, it called in several Zygarde Cells, and became Zygarde 10%, defeating them with Land's Wrath. The other Zygarde was encountered in a cave in its 50% form, but defeated Team Flare using Land's Wrath. This Zygarde was known as Z2. Zygarde Complete Form first appear in Dream a Little Dream from Me! in Squishy's dream. Z2 was eventually captured by Team Flare, much to the dismay of Squishy. After the Pokémon League ended, Lysandre used Z2 to unleash havoc upon Lumiose City and all of Kalos in its 50% form. Squishy would confront Z2 and it eventually revealed its own 50% form, but was ultimately controlled by Team Flare. However, Bonnie helped Squishy snap out of the control until Clemont destroyed the machine that controlled Zygarde. Squishy confronted Z2, and along with Bonnie, managed to win Z2's trust despite the latter's distrust of humans. Eventually, Lysandre unleashed a Megalith Zygarde using the Mega Evolution energy he gathered, and it crawled to the Anistar City sundial. It wasn't stopped despite the best efforts of Ash, his friends, and the Gym Leaders of Kalos, which eventually led to Squishy and Z2 merging to become the Complete Zygarde. After the transformation, Zygarde briefly battled the Megalith, and ultimately destroyed it and Lysandre with Core Enforcer. The two Zygarde then left and thanked Bonnie and her friends for their help. Later on, in Facing the Needs of the Many! they asked for the help of Ash's Greninja in destroying the roots that attacked all of Kalos, to which Greninja accepted. Currently, they are with Greninja in trying to clean up the remaining roots that had attacked Kalos during Team Flare's plans.

Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde appeared in XYS05.

The mortality trio is a fan-made term that is used to refer to three Legendary Pokémon from the Kalos region: Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde. Other fan terms include the Yggdrasil trio and the axis trio.

Compared to other legendary trios, the members of the mortality trio bear different appearances and are based off of different creatures. Their appearances are supposedly based off of Norse mythology, but their mythology may be based off of Hinduism. Xerneas represents life, and Yveltal represents destruction, two aspects that form mortality of life. Zygarde represents order, and is said to maintain balance between life and destruction, appearing and unleashing its secret power whenever the ecosystem falls into disarray.

Xerneas and Yveltal were supposedly involved in the creation of the ultimate weapon by AZ 3,000 years ago. It is said that AZ used their powers to revive his Floette, and gave it, along with himself, eternal life, and also destroyed everyone involved in the ongoing Kalos war. It is also said that their powers, when unleashed from the ultimate weapon, irradiated several evolutionary stones, turning them into Mega Stones and thereby enabling many Pokémon to undergo a special form of evolution called Mega Evolution.

Zygarde has several alternate forms. Its base form is called the 50% form, in which it looks like a serpent and is at half its full power. It also bears the 10% form, in which it looks like a dog, and has high Speed. With its full power, it becomes Complete Zygarde, which bears power exceeding that of Xerneas and Yveltal. It also has Zygarde Core, which is Zygarde's mind, and Zygarde Cell, which is a flattened version of Zygarde core.

Zygarde, in its 50% form, has a considerably lower base stat total than Xerneas and Yveltal, sitting at a mere 600 while Xerneas and Yveltal each have a base stat total of 680. Xerneas and Yveltal have the abilities Fairy Aura and Dark Aura respectively, which power up Fairy- and Dark-type moves. Zygarde bears the ability Aura Break, which reverses the effects of Fairy Aura and Dark Aura. It alternatively has the ability Power Construct, which transforms Zygarde in either 10% or 50% form into Complete Zygarde when its HP falls below 50%, also recovering HP equal to the difference between its new HP value and previous HP value prior to transformation.

Xerneas and Yveltal are the mascots of the Kalos based Generation VI games.

In the games

Pokémon X and Y

In X and Y, Xerneas or Yveltal can be caught at the Team Flare Secret HQ on the lowest floor. Either one is required to be caught to proceed with the storyline. Zygarde can be caught at Terminus Cave after the player defeats the Elite Four.

In the anime

Xerneas and Yveltal made their debut appearance in Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction. In this movie, Xerneas is sought after by Diancie in hopes that its Fairy Aura will awaken Diancie's true power and enable it to create a Heart Diamond. Xerneas appears in the Allearth Forest, and after Diancie finally runs into Xerneas, it reveals to Diancie that it knew what it seeks. It then grants Diancie its Fairy Aura which it bathes in. Yveltal lived in the form of a cocoon, but several thieves fighting over possession of Diancie fell into the deep pit that Yveltal was in. It then appeared in its cocoon and awoke, immediately activating its Dark Aura. In a fit of rage, it chased all of the thieves, Team Rocket, Diancie, and Ash and fired Oblivion Wing at them, petrifying all of them except Diancie and Ash, and turned much of the forest to stone and caused it to wither and die. Before Yveltal could attempt to finish Diancie and Ash, it was stopped by Xerneas. The two had a brief exchange of attacks, then Xerneas communicated with Yveltal an removed its Dark Aura. Yveltal then left the forest in peace. Xerneas then restored the forest to life and revived all who perished using Geomancy. While doing so, it transformed into a tree. When asked if it was dying, Xerneas told Diancie that it is not dying, and that it is the promise of life and beginning of hope. It was revealed in a flashback that years prior to the events of the movie, Yveltal destroyed Allearth Forest before being stopped by Xerneas, and then turned into a giant cocoon.

Xerneas made a brief appearance in Foggy Pokémon Orienteering. It appeared before Bonnie, and all of her friends saw it as well.

Currently, they are with Greninja in trying to clean up the remaining roots that had attacked Kalos during Team Flare's plans.

Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde appeared in XYS05.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Xerneas and Yveltal debuted in the X & Y arc, where they met in Vaniville Town and battled each other, causing much destruction in the process. They were being observed by Lysandre. Later, they stopped fighting and reverted to their dormant forms as a tree and a cocoon. Team Flare would later seek these two to power up the ultimate weapon.

Zygarde has yet to appear in the manga.

Trivia

 • Zygarde's place in the trio parallels Rayquaza, as it possesses an ability that reverses the effect of the abilities of the other two members of its trio. Its role as the balancing Pokémon of the trio can also parallel that of Giratina.
 • Much like the weather trio before it, the mortality trio's colors are the additive primary colors of light.
 • Xerneas and Yveltal have the highest catch rate of all Legendary Pokémon, with a catch rate of 45. This is likely due to them being required to catch during the storyline of Pokémon X and Y.
 • The mortality trio is the only set of legendaries in Generation VI.
