The Sableye are non-player characters from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness. They were introduced as minor antagonists but later played an important role in the Special Episode In the Future of Darkness. They are six servants from the future who serve Primal Dialga and Dusknoir as his loyal servants. They are all reformed at the end of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, alongside Dusknoir.

History

Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky

The first appearance of Dusknoir's Sableye minions appeared in Treasure Town after Dusknoir successfully captured Grovyle. A couple of Sableye servants were shown to be carrying the captured Grovyle into a dimensional hole that opened, presumably by Dusknoir, in the center of Treasure Town. Once they threw Grovyle into the dimensional hole, they jumped into the hole, awaiting Dusknoir and the unknowing player and their partner. Once the player and partner came to, one appeared as the jailor, blindfolding and stockading the player and partner next to Grovyle. The Sableye prepared to use Fury Swipes to open the ropes to finish Grovyle and the player and partner off, but were sabotaged by a last-second regular attack, much to the surprise of Dusknoir and the Sableye. Once the player and partner escaped with Grovyle, the Sableye and Dusknoir went off searching for them until they ambushed them before jumping into a Passage of Time at Deep Dusk Forest to return to the past.

Dusknoir and the Sableye did not appear until later when Dusknoir and the Sableye ambushed the player, partner, and Grovyle at the Old Ruins in the Hidden Land. After Dusknoir revealed how Primal Dialga warped them to that spot, the Sableye attempted to throw the trio into another dimensional hole at the base of the temple at the Old Ruins until the trio attacked them again with a regular attack. Once the player, partner, and Grovyle engaged them in battle, they were defeated and fled into the dimensional hole but were not seen after this point in the game (in Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, only).

In the Future of Darkness

Once Grovyle and Dusknoir arrived back in the future, Dusknoir awakened to find the Sableye to put forward their plan to lure Grovyle to Icicle Forest to melt his soul and have Dusknoir return to the past in Grovyle's body as a last resort to try and sabotage the player and partner before they restore Temporal Tower. As Grovyle traveled through Barren Valley, he and Dusknoir became ambushed by four Sableye and attacked Grovyle and Dusknoir in the clearing for Grovyle to trust Dusknoir to have the plan executed. Once Grovyle and Dusknoir travel through the Dark Wasteland, they ambush and capture a Sableye for information as to why Dusknoir was "attacked" back in the Barren Valley. The Sableye told the two that a new henchman, the "final agent" that was to travel to the past to sabotage the player and partner, was the one who ordered the Sableye to betray and eliminate Dusknoir.

After Dusknoir and Grovyle go to Temporal Tower to look for Primal Dialga and his new henchman, they head over to Dusk Forest to look for Celebi before she gets captured by Primal Dialga to send the new henchman back to the past. In the Black Swamp, Celebi was nowhere to be found; however, all six Sableye show up and ambush Grovyle and Dusknoir again. After defeating them, Dusknoir grasps one of the Sableye, who attempted to flee, for information on Primal Dialga and Celebi. Once Sableye tells Dusknoir and Grovyle that Primal Dialga went off in pursuit of Celebi at Frozen Island, he fled, and the duo head over to Spacial Cliffs to meet up with two Porygon to transport them to Frozen Island.

Once Dusknoir and Grovyle arrive at Icicle Forest, Grovyle asks for information from a local Snorunt, who reveals to the two that Celebi was captured and transported by the Sableye to be held prisoner by Spiritomb. Once the electricity struck Grovyle in the four gigantic icicles at the far end of the Icicle Forest, three Sableye appear from behind Spiritomb and a captured Celebi, while three Sableye emerge from behind Dusknoir. He revealed to Grovyle to be an elaborate plan to trap Grovyle and melt his soul for Dusknoir to possess Grovyle's body and be the one who would sabotage the player and partner. However, once Grovyle revealed to Dusknoir that he noticed a change of heart in him, he also pleaded with the Sableye, asking them what they wanted in life. Dusknoir saved Grovyle at the last second, much to everyone's surprise. Once Primal Dialga appeared and viciously attacked Dusknoir for betraying him, the Sableye started to take Grovyle's words to heart and attack Primal Dialga and save Dusknoir's life. It was to no avail, as Primal Dialga quickly wiped out all six Sableye with one attack.

After Primal Dialga flew into a rampage, driven purely by instincts, leading him to go up Vast Ice Mountain, Grovyle, Dusknoir, Celebi, and the Sableye went off in pursuit of him; however, Dusknoir urged the Sableye to stay put at the base by the Kangaskhan Rock as the Sableye would make the group less mobile if they all went to stop Primal Dialga from reaching the Passage of Time at the pinnacle. The Sableye were later seen panicking at the base of the mountain, with their bodies beginning to emit light in the same fashion the player (in the present), Grovyle, Dusknoir, Primal Dialga, and Celebi did, as the planet started to move after Primal Dialga, Dusknoir, Grovyle, and Celebi disappeared. After the player and partner restored the planet, all of the Pokémon of the future were brought back by a "being higher than Dialga", the Sableye were shown to be overjoyed that they had not disappeared and can live life as they wish.

Super Mystery Dungeon

One Sableye later appeared as a recruitable character in Super Mystery Dungeon and is linked to Drifloon, Spiritomb, and Dusknoir. As the client of his mission, his connection request asks the player to defeat Spiritomb in a dungeon, and after defeating Spiritomb, Sableye will connect with the player.

Personality and characteristics

The Sableye aren't shown to have distinctive personalities from each other, but they are all directed to be dedicated followers of Dusknoir's. They all take orders from either Dusknoir or Primal Dialga without fail, even when Primal Dialga "ordered" the Sableye to eliminate Dusknoir for his failure to stop Grovyle and the player and partner in the past.

The Sableye are shown to care about each other. One of them revealed to Grovyle and Dusknoir through interrogation that if they told the duo, they wouldn't know what would happen to the Sableye if they revealed the new henchman. However, seeing how this was part of Dusknoir's plot to go back into the past inhabiting Grovyle's body, this part of the Sableye's true personalities may be up for debate. It may be possible for the Sableye to honestly care for each other, as they were all happy to see each other after Arceus restored the future. Whatever the case may be, this leaves the Sableye's true personalities to be nothing short of a true mystery. They have considerable empathy toward those they align with, which is noted while Primal Dialga viciously attacked Dusknoir for betraying him. Once the Sableye all had a change of heart, they remained loyal to Dusknoir and agreed to follow Grovyle, Dusknoir, and Celebi to stop Primal Dialga from doing unknown calamities by going through a Passage of Time in the instinctive state he was in.

In the anime

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness, the Sableye appeared alongside Dusknoir and assisted him in trying to stop Grovyle and Team Poképals from taking the Relic Fragment and going to Temporal Tower on Primal Dialga's orders. However, they were quickly defeated by a combination of Grovyle's Energy Ball, Chimchar's Fire Spin, and Piplup's Whirlpool. Once they noticed the same combination of moves used to defeat Dusknoir, they jumped into a portal next to the ruins to return into the future.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blazing Exploration Team

Trivia

  • Interestingly, when the Sableye were instructed to eliminate the player, their partner, and Grovyle, they used Fury Swipes; however, all Sableye were shown never to execute that move in future battles.
