About Myself

  • I am a Bulbapedia user from Florida, USA, aged 25 who has played every gerneration since Gen I. Well, except for Gen V – while I appreciate the plot in BW, that was a poorly conceieved generation overall with a lot of flimsily designed species.
  • I am only a fan of the primary canon of Pokémon games.
  • I do not support or engage in Poké-shipping.

Changes to Battle Mechanics & Abilities

  • The ability to learn Sunny Day, Rain Dance, Toxic, or Earthquake via TM should be much more limited.
  • While Rain Dance or rain is in effect, the base damage of Water-type AND Electric-type moves will be increased by 50%.
  • Electric-type is now super-effective against Steel-type.
  • Fighting-type is no longer super-effective against Steel-type or Ice-type, inflicting only normal-damage (×1) against either type.
  • Rock-type is no longer super-effective against Ice-type. Rock-type inflicts normal-damage (×1) against Ice-type.
  • Now Grass-type only inflicts normal damage (×1) against Rock-type, ie Grass-type is no longer super-effective against Rock-type.
  • Poison-type is no longer super-effective against Fairy-type. In fact, the reverse now holds: Fairy-type is super-effective against Poison-type.
  • Poison-type is now super-effective against Water-type as well as Grass-type.
  • Steel-type is now super-effective against Grass-type.
  • Both Psychic-type and Fire-type are now super-effective against Fairy-type. Meanwhile, Steel-type still resists Fairy-type but is no longer super-effective against Fairy-type.
  • Now Ice-type and Grass-type in addition to Fire-type and Steel-type are resistant to Fairy-type.
  • Fairy-type no longer resists Bug-type.
  • Fairy-type and Ghost-type inflict normal-damage (×1) against each other.
  • Ground-type no longer resists Poison-type and is no longer super-effective against Poison-type either.
  • While Ground-type is still immune to Electric-type, Rock-type is now resistant to Electric-type.
  • STAB is reduced from a ×1.5 multiplier to a ×1.33 multiplier.
  • Type-order now matters: whether a type first or second affects resistance (but not STAB). For a given Pokémon, the type listed first reduces damages from a weaker-type by two-thirds (×0.33) while the type listed second reduces damages from a weaker-type by a third (×0.66). An attack that is weak against both of the target's types inflicts 1 HP in damage. (The in-battle text will read "Attack inflicted negligible damage.")
  • Sheer Force is now the Fighting-type equivalent of Aerilate, Pixilate, etc: Sheer Force causes all Normal-type moves used by the Pokémon to become Fighting-type and receive a 30% base power boost in addition to all other modifiers, such as STAB.
  • During harsh sunlight, a Pokémon with ability Solar Power gains a 1.25× boost to its Special Attack AND RECOVERS one-eighth (⅛) of its maximum HP at the end of each turn.
  • Illuminate now has in-battle effects: a Pokémon on the field with this Ability will grant a 30% boost to the original accuracy of moves by all allies AND reduce the original accuracy of moves by all foes by 30%. It will also prevent foes from using the abilities Compound Eyes, Keen Eye, or Tinted Lens while a Pokémon with this ability remains in battle. (The accuracy boost from Illuminate does not stack upon the accuracy boost from Compound Eyes by allies.)
  • Liquid Ooze causes HP-draining moves used on the Pokémon with this Ability to damage their user instead of healing them. But as a secondary effect, this ability also clears entry hazards after coming into contact with and inflicting damage to a Pokémon with this Ability.
  • When a Pokémon with the ability Aftermath is knocked out by an opponent's attack – whether it makes contact or not – damage is dealt to that opponent equal to the amount of HP the fainted Pokémon had left before last being hit or equal to ⅓ of the opponent's maximum HP, whichever is greater. (Innards Out is no more!)
  • The ability Intimidate lowers the Attack stat of all adjacent opponents by half. Another new counterpart ability, Dazzle, lowers the Special Attack stat of all adjacent opponents by half.
  • The effects of Sticky Hold and Gooey are combined into a single ability, an improved Sticky Hold. All prior instances of Gooey become Sticky Hold.
  • The effects of Magma Armor and Flame Body are combined into a single ability, an improved Flame Body. All prior instances of Magma Armor become Flame Body.

  • The effects of Vital Spirit and Moxie are combined into a single ability, an improved Vital Spirit. All prior instances of Moxie become Vital Spirit.

  • NEW ABILITY: Nocturnal replaces Insomnia – ie, all prior instances of Insomnia become Nocturnal. Nocturnal prevents the Pokémon with this ability from being afflicted by sleep by an opponent's moves, including Yawn; however, this Pokémon may still use Rest, unlike Pokémon with the ability Vital Spirit. Pokémon with Nocturnal also receive a STAB-boost for using Ghost or Dark-type attacks, regardless of the user's own type.
  • NEW WEATHER TYPE: Thunderstorm, a variation of rain. During a thunderstorm, each turn there is a 12.5% (⅛) chance that any Pokémon in battle may be struck by Thunderbolt from the environment; Steel-type Pokémon on the field will have a 25% (¼) chance of being struck. Pokémon on the field with ability Lightning Rod will attract Thunderbolt every time (multiple Pokémon on the field with this ability will share the probability of getting struck among themselves).

Using Thunder during rain will generate a Thunderstorm for as long as the rain lasts – ie, A thunderstorm rolled in with the call of Thunder!

Type-order now matters: whether a type first or second affects resistance (but not STAB). For a given Pokémon, the type listed first reduces damages from a weaker-type by two-thirds (×0.33) while the type listed second reduces damages from a weaker-type by a third (×0.66). An attack that is weak against both of the target's types inflicts 1 HP in damage. (The in-battle text will read "Attack inflicted negligible damage.") A complete ineffectiveness against either type will still make the move deal no damage, since 0 multiplied by any number is 0. Also, STAB is reduced from a ×1.5 multiplier to a ×1.33 multiplier.

  • In addition to reshuffled or updated Gym Leaders, several changes have happened to the layout and names of cities across the rebooted Johto:
    • Cherrygrove City has replaced the location of New Bark Town at the foot of Tohjo Falls, becoming the player's new hometown. Cherrygrove City now boasts an observation deck built onto a hill at the city's northernmost point, similar to (the former) Aspertia City. Looking through a pair of binoculars there, the player alludes to a a distance snowy mountain in the distance.
    • Your new hometown also features a Pokémon Center and PokéMart.
    • The land occupied by the former Cherrygrove City has become the Berry Collective, an extenson of Route 29 where the Berry-growing enthusiasts work and reside alongside a large garden similar to the Berry Master's garden located on Hoenn Route 123. The Berry Collective house is also a rest stop for trainers to heal their teams.
    • Route 30, Route 31, and Route 46 have become part of a rugged canyon (named Fennel Canyon) with fewer trees & more boulders and cliffs, as well as places to use Rock Smash to break rocks or Rock Climb to scale slopes. You cannot fully navigate Route 30 or Route 31 during your first approach.
    • Violet City has been replaced by Lacunosa Town, An oasis cut into canyon rock along Fennel Canyon. This town still has exits out onto Route 31, Route 32, and Route 36.
    • Marshal is now the Gym Leader of Lacunosa Town…but won't be available during your first visit, as his Battle Girl girlfriend will inform you when you first arrive to challenge him. He'll be off training deep in Mt. Mortar, requiring a SIDE QUEST for players to find him there after acquiring access to Strength outside of battle. Defeating Marshal will also grant access to Rock Climb outside of battle.
    • You cannot fully navigate Route 32 during your first approach as the north half of the coastal route now features slopes, cliffs, and small caves only accessible by Rock Climb. These cliffs and small caves might hold Fossils, or Shoal Shells that can be used by the Treasure Hunter in Driftveil City to craft a [[Shell Bell].
    • Union Cave now holds Shoal Salts that can be used by the Treasure Hunter in Driftveil City to craft a [[Shell Bell], as well as (randomly regenerated) Heart Scales to trade for the expertise of the Move Reminder (now found in Olivine City).
    • The small strip formerly known as Route 33 is now considered the tail-end of Route 32. Instead, Route 33 will refer to a trainer-filled sea route navigable by Surf leading back to the Berry Farm on Route 29. An offshore wind farm is seen in the background along the route!
    • Cilan, Chili, and Cress run a Battle Café in Goldenrod City allowing for a Multi Battle/Battle Royal(?) once per day. In fact, during your first visit to Goldenrod City, you will be required to team up alongside Marley against the restaurateur brothers (and win) before Marley agrees to accept your challenge to a gym battle.
    • The eastern half of Route 36 will be rugged and craggy from the rock faces of Fennel Canyon. The "Cut-able tree" at the center of the route has been replaced by a "smashable rock" as a roadblock. Defeating Gym Leader Marley in Goldenrod City will allow players to use Rock Smash outside of battle to clear the path.
    • Route 38 and Route 39 now feature much more rugged terrain with tall karst formations and irrigated paddy fields inspired by Wulingyuan, otherwise the Forest of Ten Thousands Peaks. There is also a river navigable by Surf requiring Waterfall to reach a ledge high above. This area will be known as Forina Valley.
    • Moomoo Farm has been relocated from Johto Route 39 to Kanto Route 13, just north of the infamous "maze of fences".
    • Cianwood City has been replaced by Driftveil City, a City of billowing sails where nostalgia for old traditions meets the gossip of new currents. Sprout Tower is also located here, with the top floors repurposed as Falkner's gym.
    • The tall grass in Kanto Route 6, Kanto Route 7, and [[Kanto Route 11] has become marshy areas, similar to sandstorm.
    • Kanto Route 3 now includes an Ace Trainer or Triathlete named Ben who mentions, "I like shorts! They're comfy and easy to wear while I train!"
    • Kanto Route 8 now features more boulders and cliffs, as well as places to use Rock Smash to break rocks or Rock Climb to scale slopes.
    • The south side of Kanto Route 15 now opens onto a beach straddling a strip of navigable water. The north side now features more boulders and cliffs, as well as places to use Rock Smash to break rocks or Rock Climb to scale slopes.
  • Route 41 will comprise a much larger area and the Whirl Islands will also be more prominent islands in their own right, each featuring a different enclosed microclimate above-ground.
    • Speciation offers many surprises on islands in particular so the four Whirl Islands will have something to offer: different sets of rare berries to find hidden in the ground, a much higher rate of finding Shiny Pokémon (4× as likely), and different sets of wild Pokémon across four different environments
    • A) the four different environments are swamp (generally Poison, Ground, Ghost, and Dark-type); volcanic hot springs (generally Fire, Water, and Dragon); windswept rock outcroppings (generally Rock, Steel, and Flying-type); and flower meadow (generally Grass, Bug, Normal, and Fairy-type).
    • B) each island will feature wild Pokémon from a different region: Hoenn, Sinnoh, Kalos, or Alola.
  • Weather conditions – usually harsh sunlight or rain – vary across across many Johto and Kanto routes.
    • Route 35, Route 34, and Route 32 have a 50% chance of clear weather, 25% chance of harsh sunlight, or 25% chance of rain during each visit.
    • Route 37 and Route 42 in particular have a 50% chance of fog during each visit. Route 37 will always be foggy during your first visit as a sort of introduction to Ecruteak City.
    • Route 38 and Route 39 in particular have a 25% chance each of experiencing rain, thunderstorms, fog, or clear weather during each visit.
    • Route 41 has a 50% chance of clear weather, 25% chance of rain, or 25% chance of thunderstorms during each visit.
    • The same rain and flooding patterns from Generation IV persist at Gyarados Lake.
    • Route 45 and Route 46 in particular have a 50% chance each of experiencing sandstorms, 25% chance of rain, or 25% chance of clear weather during each visit. These routes will experience the same weather changes simultaneously (ie, you won't get rain on one route, followed by a sandstorm on the next route).
    • Kanto Route 26 has a 25% chance each of experiencing rain, thunderstorms, sandstorms, or clear weather during each visit.
    • Kanto Route 3 and Kanto Route 4 will always feature Misty Terrain at night that will be present throughout battles in these areas.
    • Kanto Route 24 and Kanto Route 25 offers a 25% chance each of rain, fog, harsh sunlight, or clear weather during each visit. These routes will experience the same weather changes simultaneously (ie, you won't get rain on one route, followed by a fog the next route).
    • Kanto Route 17 (Kanto's Cycling Road) is now a bridge elevated over the bay and will always feature Tailwind that will be present throughout battles in this area.
    • Kanto Route 8 and Kanto Route 9 in particular have a 50% chance of fog, 25% chance of rain, and 25% chance of clear weather during each visit. Route 9 will always be foggy during your first visit.
    • Kanto Route 28 and the base/exterior of Mt. Silver will typically be shrouded by fog 50% of the time and by hail 25% of the time (otherwise clear weather 25% of the time).
    • Heavy snowfall is present at the summit of Mt. Silver.
  • SIDE QUEST When walking along Route 31 for the first time, Elite Four member Karen OR Gym Leader Jasmine will be seen blocking the entrance to Dark Cave. Return after gaining access to Rock Smash outside of battle to "join" Karen OR Jasmine in search of a rare Sableye OR Mawile, respectively (by "joining" you will guide them through Dark Cave and actually be allowed to play as either of these characters in-battle to catch Sableye/Mawile).
  • SIDE QUEST A trio of Dragonair have replaced Ampharos at Glitter Lighthouse. With one having fallen ill, Jasmine requests that you acquire a medicinal recipe from Falkner in Driftveil City across the bay before she accepts your challenge to a Gym Battle.
  • SIDE QUEST Find Marshal in Mt. Mortar to challenge him to a Gym Battle. His Battle Girl girlfriend can't reach him tucked deep in the mountain ("No signal") to confirm that his newly redesigned gym is ready for challengers. Deliver her Letter to him to convince him to wrap up his training and return.
  • SIDE QUEST The Ruins of Alph are "Closed for Excavations" until you earn your sixth badge from Marshal.

  • In addition to reshuffled or updated Gym Leaders, several changes have happened to the layout and names of cities and routes across the rebooted Sinnoh:
    • The player's hometown is now Oreburgh City where Roark is a childhood friend and newly minted Gym Leader.
    • Jubilife City has been replaced by Hearthome City. In addition to Alder's new gym, this is also where Professor Rowan now maintains his lab.
    • Veilstone City has been replaced by Virbank City, complete with the gasoline processing facilities seen in B2W2 replacing the Team Galactic HQ.
    • The former location of Hearthome City is now occupied by Village Bridge, which has also been renamed Canalave City. This city has no Gym but serves as a rest stop for trainers. However, the Pokémon Fan Club and the Poffin House are located here. The Super Contest arena has also been constructed on along the river bank. An entrace to Amity Square is located in the north-eastern corner of town.
    • Solaceon Town is no more, its wilderness incorporated into Route 209, but the Pokémon Day Care and Solaceon Ruins remain intact.
    • Sunyshore City has been renamed as Nimbasa City and now also features a Big Stadium and Small Court.
    • Route 222 is now also known by the locals as Belo Horizonte Beach.
    • After winning the Beacon Badge from Elesa in your fourth Gym Battle, players gain access to HM Surf, opening up travel to Pastoria City or Castelia City in the far southwest corner of Sinnoh (southwest of what was once Twinleaf Town). As such, either Gardenia or Byron can be challenged next.
    • To reach Pastoria City through Route 213, players must now use HM Surf to travel along mangroves at the southwestern edge of the route.
  • The Resort Desert is now located on Sinnoh Route 229 as an expansive desert area featuring a raging sandstorm. The Resort Area to the immediate south is now known as the Oasis Resort.

New Moves

Dust Devil is a damage-dealing Ground-type move. It inflicts damage as a special move if the user's Special Attack base stat is greater; otherwise, it inflicts damage as a physical move (if the user's Attack base stat is greater). It inflicts damage as a special move using the user's Attack base stat. Dust Devil inflicts damage and has a 25% chance of causing the target to flinch.

Dust Devil can hit Pokémon during the semi-invulnerable turn of Bounce, Fly, and Sky Drop; if it does, this move will inflict double damage.

Charm Offense is a damage-dealing Fairy-type move. It inflicts damage as a physical move if the user's Attack base stat is greater; otherwise, it inflicts damage as a special move (if the user's Special Attack base stat is greater). Charm Offense inflicts damage and has a 30% chance of lowering the target's accuracy by one stage. Charm Offense hits a single target at a time.




Ground-type status move Sand Pit prevents all grounded foes from fleeing (including Teleport) or switching out as long as the user remains in battle. Using Baton Pass, U-turn, Volt Switch, or Parting Shot will fail upon use but Teleport may still be used. Holding a Smoke Ball or Shed Shell allows the Pokémon to flee or Teleport, but not switch. Ghost-type and Flying-type Pokémon as well as Pokémon with the abilities Levitate or Run Away are unaffected.

If a wild Pokémon uses Sand Pit and the player's Pokémon faints, the move no longer bind the player to battle should the player attempt to flee instead of sending out another Pokémon.

Sand Pit does not affect allies.

When Ghost-type status move Fog Call is used, fog will roll over the field. This effect will last for 5 turns. This overrides any other previous type of weather.

While this move is in effect, the Accuracy of all Pokémon battling – EXCEPT Ghost-type and Flying-type Pokémon – is multiplied by 75% (ie, reduced by 25%). Also, the base power of Ghost-type and Flying-type moves will be increased by 25%. Furthermore:


Fire-type status move Scorched Earth creates terrain that envelops the field and replaces the background environment and any other terrain that is already in effect. The terrain fades after five turns.

While in effect, this terrain has the following effects on Pokémon that are on the ground and not in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move:

If Scorched Earth is in effect, Nature Power becomes Flamethrower; Secret Power uses the animation of Incinerate and has a 30% chance of inflicting a burn; while Camouflage causes the user to become Fire-type. Natural objects disappear while is in effect. The weather-modifying moves Rain Dance, Sandstorm, Hail, or Fog Call will cause Scorched Earth to end; however, Scorched Earth can be stacked with Sunny Day or the ability Drought to generate extremely harsh sunlight.

Water-type status move Tidal Surge creates terrain that envelops the field and replaces the background environment and any other terrain that is already in effect. The terrain fades after five turns.

While in effect, this terrain has the following effects on Pokémon that are on the ground and not in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move:

If Tidal Surge is in effect, Nature Power becomes Surf; Secret Power uses the animation of Hydro Pump and has a 30% chance of inflicting a burn; while Camouflage causes the user to become Water-type. Natural objects disappear while is in effect. The weather-modifying moves Sunny Day, Sandstorm, Hail, or Fog Call will cause Tidal Surge to end; however, Tidal Surge can be stacked with Rain Dance or the ability Drizzle to generate heavy rain.



Thorn Whip is Roserade's new signature move. Thorn Whip inflicts damage, hitting the target 2-5 times per use. There is a 37.5% chance that it will hit 2 times, a 37.5% chance that it will hit 3 times, a 12.5% chance that it will hit 4 times, and a 12.5% chance that it will hit 5 times. Provided that the move does not miss, it will hit 3 times on average, giving it an average power of 30. Each strike made has an equal chance to be a critical hit. Pokémon with the Ability Skill Link will always hit five times when using Thorn Whip unless it misses. As a physical move, Thorn Whip is affected by Counter rather than Mirror Coat.

Thorn Whip may continue attacking after breaking a substitute. Bide and Mirror Coat will only acknowledge the last strike of this move. If a Focus Sash, Focus Band, or Sturdy activates before the last strike is dealt, the following strike will cause the defending Pokémon to faint. A Focus Band can still activate repeatedly to prevent fainting, but each chance is independent of the previous one.

If the user is holding a King's Rock or Razor Fang, each consecutive hit has an equal chance to cause the opponent to flinch. If the target has Weak Armor, each strike will activate it.

Dance Macabre randomly raises two stats – Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, Speed, or Accuracy – of the user or any other Pokémon on the field by one stage for each use. Echo Wave is a sound-based move that inflicts a random amount of damage, varying between 0.5× and 1.5× the user's level. The damage is always rounded down; however, Echo Wave will always deal at least 1 HP of damage.


Vapor Therapy Vapor Therapy cures the user, all Pokémon in the user's party, and the user's allies, of all status conditions (sleep, poison, paralysis, freeze, and burn).


Phoenix Ascent (or Fire Rebirth?) is a two-turn Fire-type status move that resets all the user's stat stages (positive and negative) to 0, fully restores the user's HP (but not PP), as well as removes all status conditions…after an initial turn when the user is semi-invulnerable.

    • turn 1, in-battle message: A mystical fire seems to consume [user]!
    • turn 2, in-battle message: [user] rises from the ashes, renewed!

The user sent out at the end of the second turn after all other Pokémon have moved.


Flame Rite is a non-damaging Fire-type status move that restores up to 50% of the user's maximum HP and then causes the user to discard its Fire-type. Flame Rite fails if the user isn't Fire-type, which means the move will always fail after the first use until the Pokémon regains its Fire-type – eg, by switching out, using the move Reflect Type, or through an ability like Protean. If the user is a pure Fire-type Pokémon, it will become typeless be treated as Normal-type until further notice.

Flame Rite will also thaw out the user if is frozen upon using this move; however, this move cannot thaw out the user if the move would fail due to the user losing its Fire-type.
