Ursaring (Japanese: リングマ Ringuma) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Teddiursa starting at level 30.

Biology

Physiology

Ursaring are tall, bear-like Pokémon that stand at about 5′11″ (1.8m). Ursaring have brown fur covering their bodies, except for their muzzles and a ring on their stomachs, both a light tan. They usually stand on their short back feet and seem to be mostly bipedal, using their long, clawed forelegs to climb trees or collect food. As in their pre-evolution, they have small, puffy tails.

Gender differences

The fur around a female Ursaring's shoulders is longer than that of a male.

Special abilities

Despite their large bulk, Ursaring are quite happy to climb trees in search of food or refuge. Ursaring also have an incredible sense of smell, being able to distinguish any scent. Ursaring usually have one of two abilities: Quick Feet, which raises its speed by 50% when inflicted with a status condition, or Guts, which raises its attack by 50% when inflicted by a status ailment.

Behavior

Ursaring are known for their food-collecting habits; they often walk through forests in the mornings to collect berries. They also have an excellent sense of smell and use it to find and dig up food buried deep underground. They have been observed scratching trees, leaving marks which show that they bear good fruit.

Like real-life bears, Ursaring can be quite aggressive when angered or especially when protecting their Teddiursa offspring. However, they seldom attack unprovoked.

Habitat

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Like its pre-evolution, it's likely that Ursaring have a preference for honey over other food. In the wild, they usually forage for berries, roots and other plant material. They appear to be herbivores, but considering their muscular body structure and sharp claws, they may eat meat like real bears and be omnivores. However, there has been no documented evidence backing this claim.

In the anime

Ursaring has made appearances in numerous episodes, such as its debut in Forest Grumps, where it scared or chased Ash and friends or Team Rocket out of its territory.

The Teddiursa in UnBEARable evolved to Ursaring at the end of the episode.

Paul owns an Ursaring, which he caught in Different Strokes for Different Blokes.

Ursaring, together with Teddiursa, appeared in Giratina and the Sky Warrior.

In Going For A Spinda, an Ursaring parent rescued its baby Teddiursa from Team Rocket, who had it disguised as a Spinda in order to lure a real Spinda to rescue it.

An Ursaring and Teddiursa also had a cameo in Celebi: Voice of the Forest, as two of the Pokémon living in Celebi's forest.

An Ursaring is used by one of the students of Pokémon Summer Academy in the first leg of the Pokémon Triathlon in One Team, Two Team, Red Team, Blue Team!.

Trivia

  • Both of Ursaring's abilities deal with a certain stat increasing when it is inflicted with a status ailment.

Origin

Ursaring is based on a grizzly bear.

As Teddiursa has a Crescent Moon on its head, Ursaring has the moon blocking the sun causing an annulus to form on its stomach. However, it may just signify a full moon.

Just like Teddiursa, it is possibly based on the honey bear and it resembles the Asian black bear or crescent bear.

Name origin

Ursaring's name is a combination of ursa, Latin for bear, and ring, referring to the circle on its stomach. Its Japanese name is a combination of English ring, or rin, an alternate reading for 林, which means woods, and 熊 kuma, bear.

In other languages

  • German: Ursaring
  • French: Ursaring
  • Korean: 링곰 Ringgom - 링 is a transliteration of the English word ring and 곰 means bear.
