Trivia

  • Otamaro shares some similarities with Poliwag; both are Water-type Pokémon based on tadpoles that first evolve at level 25.
    • It also shares the name "Tadpole Pokémon" with the original members of the Poliwag evolutionary family: Poliwag, Poliwhirl and Poliwrath.
    • Also, both lines have an evolutionary relative based on a frog.

Origin

Otamaro appears to be a combination of a Surinam toad tadpole and a loudspeaker. The Surinam Toad is an aquatic amphibian whose backs are covered in pockets that hold its eggs, which may have inspired Otamaro's spherical "speakers" on its body. Its Pokédex entry also mentions the fact that it creates vibrations underwater, also like the Surinam. Its eyebrows resemble musical notes.
