Twineedle (move): Difference between revisions

Twineedle (Japanese: ダブルニードル Double Needle) is a damage-dealing Bug-type multi-strike move introduced in Generation I. Prior to Generation V, it was Beedrill's signature move.

Effect

Generation I

Twineedle inflicts damage, striking twice per use. Each hit has a 20% chance of poisoning the target. Although only the first hit can be a critical hit, the second hit will deal the same amount of damage.

Twineedle will not hit twice if the first hit breaks a substitute. Bide and Counter will only acknowledge the second hit of this move.

Generation II

Same as Generation I, except now it can poison Steel- and Poison-type Pokémon. Also, both hits will do damage independently, consequently enabling either of them to be critical.

Generation III

Same as Generation II, but it cannot poison Steel- and Poison-type Pokémon.

Generation IV

Same as Generation III, except it will continue attacking after a substitute is broken.

Generation V

Unlike previous generations, if the first hit activates the target's Focus Sash, Focus Band, or Sturdy, the second hit will cause the defending Pokémon to faint; however, Focus Band can still activate again to prevent fainting, but each chance is independent of the previous one. Each hit will cause Weak Armor to activate.

Trivia

• Twineedle is the only non-Poison-type move that can poison under normal conditions.
• Twineedle is the only move that can poison a Steel-type Pokémon, as it is a Bug-type move instead of a Poison-type move. However, this only works in Generation II.
• Shellder's evolutionary line are the only non Bug-type Pokémon able to learn Twineedle.
