Revision as of 19:02, 6 July 2019
- If you were looking for the levels of the Trainer Card, see Trainer stars.
The Trainer level (Japanese: トレーナーレベル Trainer level) is a property of the player in Pokémon GO. The player's Trainer level is increased by earning experience (abbreviated XP). Leveling up earns the player items, and certain levels unlock particular items. Once unlocked, items can appear when searching PokéStops or opening Gifts. Trainer levels are capped at level 40, but players can continue accumulating XP.
Certain features are only unlocked at particular levels. After reaching level 5, the player can choose a team, which allows them to battle at and defend Gyms and participate in Raid Battles. After reaching level 10, the player can trade with their friends.
Additionally, the player's Trainer level determines the maximum Power Up level at which they can obtain Pokémon and Power Up Pokémon to.
Power Up levels
A player can Power Up a Pokémon up to two levels past their Trainer level, up to level 40; if a player is traded a Pokémon at a higher Power Up level, its level will be dropped to meet this limit. The levels at which Pokémon can be obtained also depend on the player's Trainer level.
- Wild Pokémon (except from raids and research tasks) can appear at any Power Up level up to the player's Trainer level, capped at level 30.
- If they are weather-boosted, they can instead appear at any Power Up level up to the player's Trainer level + 5, up to level 35.
- Pokémon hatched from Eggs have an initial Power Up level equal to the Trainer level at the time the Egg was originally obtained, capped at level 20.

Before Gyms were changed on June 20, 2017, players could also earn experience by training at a Gym controlled by their team. Defeating any one Pokémon would earn experience equal to 1/10 of the Prestige added to the Gym, while defeating all of the Gym's Pokémon would earn 12 XP.
Special Research tasks usually reward XP for completion. The amount awarded increases with the player's progress.
Successfully capturing a Pokémon using a Pokémon GO Plus or Poké Ball Plus always awards 150 XP (100 XP base + 50 XP for the first throw). The extra 50 XP is awarded even if the player has manually thrown a Poké Ball previously.
Each time the player transfers Pokémon to the Nintendo Switch, they earn 100 XP.
Levels
This section is incomplete. Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it. Reason: Recheck early levels (at least 1-6) |
Prior to February 16, 2017, levels above 8 that award Nanab Berries or Pinap Berries instead awarded Razz Berries. Prior to June 20, 2017, levels below 8 that award Nanab Berries did not award any Berries.
