The Trainer House is a two-story building, located in Viridian City in Kanto. It only appears in Generation II and IV, taking the place of the Pokémon academy in previous generations.

Built near the Indigo Plateau, the final destination for many Pokémon Trainers, the Trainer House provides a place for Trainers to battle in a controlled environment. According to visitors on the top floor of the building, the best Trainers gather here. These Trainers turn out to be real-life friends of the player, whose own parties are submitted to the game through Mystery GiftWrong template. See Template:Sup/doc. or the PokéwalkerWrong template. In Generation II

In Generation II, the Trainer will be the last player he or she has used Mystery Gift with, or in the case the player has never used Mystery Gift with anyone, Cal. If it is another player that has used Mystery Gift with, their team will consist of whatever Pokémon were in their party at the time of using Mystery Gift, including held items, moves, levels, and stats. Regardless of which Trainer it is, the opposing Trainer's sprite will be of Ethan.

In Generation IV

The player will initially encounter only Ace Trainer Cal. When the player connects their Pokéwalker with another player's and then re-syncs it back to their game, the Trainer and their Pokémon will appear in the basement; up to 10 additional Trainers may be encountered in this way. Like Generation II, the other player's team will consist of whatever Pokémon were in their party when their Pokémon was sent to the Pokéwalker, including held items, moves, levels, and stats. Unlike Generation II, if a Pokémon's level is above 50, its level is reduced to 50, just like a battle under the Flat Battle rules. After battle, all Pokémon are restored to full health, and held items are restored. Players will earn no EXP or money, but they will receive 1 BP for winning.

Unlike in Generation II, but like the Battle Frontier, if an opponent has a Pokémon that the player has not seen before, the Pokémon will not be added to the Pokédex.

Through the use of two Pokéwalkers, connected to the player's game and a friend's, one can battle oneself by connecting the Pokéwalkers and receiving a gift from the friend's Pokéwalker.

Layout

Ground floor

On entry, the first floor has a few people and a large table. Speaking to the woman behind the desk enables entry into the lower basement, where a lone trainer can be found.

Basement

Generation II

The room is mostly comprised of a large open area with only a desk located at the top of the room and an open battlefield on the lower portion. The game takes control of the player, leading them to where the player is automatically engaged in their battle against their opponent. After the battle, the game once again takes control of the player, taking them back to the desk. After the battle, the player cannot re-enter the battlefield until the next day.

Generation IV

The basement is nearly identical to its Generation II version, only with updated graphics. The biggest change is the player is no longer controlled by the game and is allowed to walk freely. This allows the player to battle with multiple people.

Cal is the default Trainer. In Generation II, he is replaced by the last person the player has used Mystery Gift with. In Generation IV, he is joined by up to the last 10 people that have interacted with the Pokéwalker.
