The Subspace Emissary (Japanese: 亜空の使者 The Subspace Emissary) is a single-player game that is contained within Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It is a side-scrolling action game with a storyline that is said to emphasize character development. Most of the playable characters are protagonists, including Pikachu, Pokémon Trainer and Lucario.

The characters form teams based on the developments of the story. Masahiro Sakurai has stated that most hidden characters are unlocked by simply playing through The Subspace Emissary and, indeed, Lucario is unlocked in this fashion. A second player can join at any time, though the camera will focus on player one.

In order to obtain trophies of the enemies in this game, the player must throw a Trophy Stand at them. This acts just like a Poké Ball as it 'captures' the opponent when they are at low health. It also works against bosses, such as Rayquaza.

A boss fight against Rayquaza.

Led by a being known as the Ancient Minister, the Subspace Army's plan is to cut apart the world and carry it into Subspace. This is achieved by two R.O.B.s detonating a Subspace Bomb and the minions known as Primid attacking anyone who resists. Now everyone must join together to stop this threat.

Pikachu

While searching for her stolen power suit, Samus rescues Pikachu from a Subspace Base and the two must escape as a team.

Pokémon Trainer

Pokémon Trainer and Lucas team up to help rescue Ness from Wario and so that Pokémon Trainer can capture a wild Ivysaur and Charizard.

Lucario

In a snowy area, Metaknight and the Ice Climbers encounter Lucario. After a fight that unlocks Lucario, it joins their team and helps Meta-Knight recover the Halberd from a mind-controlled Mr. Game and Watch. Lucario is also the one to find Snake.

Rayquaza

Separated from DK, Diddy comes across a lake with a burning Arwing spaceship at the shore. Rayquaza emerges from the water and captures Diddy but then Fox jumps out of the ship and makes a dramatic rescue. What happens from there is yet to be seen but it is known that there will be a fight against Rayquaza and interference from Bowser.
