Now, I get that Caterpie is only in White.  However, Caterpie can be traded from White to Black, or even imported from, say, FireRed or LeafGreen, games in which it's extremely common in both games of that series.  It could also come from Gold, or via a Dongle with FireRed in an original-model GBA.  In all case, a Metapod would evolve in Black, rendering the description given as completely wrong.  It needs to be determined how to correct this problem, as it occurs on other pages as well ([[Growlithe]], [[Anorinthe]] (see HG/SS), and so on.  It's a common error and can lead people to believe they have to evolve the Pokémon in THAT GAME before they use it in the other of the series, which is not the case at all.

My obvious solution is to get rid of the template; for instance, just type "Evolve [[Caterpie]]" and boom, "White 2 only" is gone. Further, being a redirect, that would double-redirect to the page using the long form without having to type "Pokémon"; a bot account could make corrections like this once a day if scripted and modify all edits to include it if you don't like double redirects here).  I think my method is actually easier to type and doesn't lead future editors wondering what on Earth <nowiki>{{p|Caterpie}}</nowiki> means.  However, if the template MUST be used, these gross inaccuracies all over the Pokédex must be fixed.  From experience, my [[Duosion]] evolved in Black just fine, as did [[Relicanth]].  [[User:CycloneGU|CycloneGU]] ([[User talk:CycloneGU|talk]]) 13:31, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

This is a template for easier linking to Pokémon articles dealing with the actual creatures — since those articles should be named like Bulbasaur (Pokémon), this article makes it easier to create this link.

To use this, type this:

{{p|Name of Pokémon}}

This works because {{{1}}} is presented as a variable, and this template generates what you right in the "Name of Pokémon area" as the {{{1}}}, thus creating the proper link. — Jellochuu 00:10, 22 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Interesting...

For some reason, all articles using this template are now displaying everything placed after it as a code box. See History of Pokémon and Route 7. --TwinsMetsFan 06:42, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Templates are very sensitive to extra spaces. - 振霖T 07:02, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I made a slightly-more-featured version

User:Raijinili/Template:P

There are three features:

  1. Uses a template for Nidoran names, to give them aliases. Mostly useless.
  2. A template for Pokémon. Useless for most, but {{subst:p}} should be helpful for some, and that option set isn't being used anyway.
  3. It has documentation. Whatever else you do, add in the documentation, at least. --Raijinili 12:27, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Section linking

Can an admin add a 2nd variable which, if filled out, adds #{{{2}}} for section linking? I also agree with the idea of a parameter to allowing different display text. And I ABSOLUTELY agree that this template( and indeed most on Bulbapedia) could really do with documentation in the <noinclude> section, rather than on the talk page or, in many cases, not at all. --LaprasBoi 17:10, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Evolving in One Game of a Series Only? Template Fix Needed

There is a major problem with this template. See for example Metapod (which BTW I do type the long way, but that's me). Scrolling down to the find locations, it says in B2/W2 to find Metapod to evolve Caterpie (White only).

In all cases, a Metapod would evolve in Black, rendering the description given as completely wrong. It needs to be determined how to correct this problem, as it occurs on other pages as well - Growlithe, Armaldo (see HG/SS) - and so on. It's a common error and can lead people to believe they have to evolve the Pokémon in THAT GAME before they use it in the other of the series, which is not the case at all.

My obvious solution is to get rid of the template; for instance, just type "Evolve Caterpie" and boom, "White 2 only" is gone. Further, being a redirect, that would double-redirect to the page using the long form without having to type "Pokémon"; a bot account could make corrections like this once a day if scripted and modify all edits to include it if you don't like double redirects here). I think my method is actually easier to type and doesn't lead future editors wondering what on Earth {{p|Caterpie}} means. However, if the template MUST be used, these gross inaccuracies all over the Pokédex must be fixed. From experience, my Duosion evolved in Black just fine, as did Reuniclus.
