I'm guessing the French name is a combination of "prism" and "papillon" (butterfly) Vienna Waltz (talk) 20:24, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Possible Origin-disco ball?

This may be pushing it a bit, but could Vivillon be based off a disco ball? Due to the square designs all over it and that its body is a silver-white color with colorful wings to represent how a disco ball reflects colors? CyberCat5555 (talk) 22:13, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Looks a little like a disco floor, or a glitch screen. Maybe even one of those colored ARTag square. I've seen a few AR tags us pinks and grey in combination.Yamitora1 (talk) 00:05, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

Worth putting to it's and its pre evos's Origin?

I found a very possible design theory of its line. It has something to do with those "pixel-like" shapes on them. http://tinyurl.com/lkhy2r8 --Antlionerd (talk) 14:10, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Korean name for Vivillon

Its Korean name is 비비용 Bibiyong.

  • It's essentially a transliteration of its Japanese name.
NOTE: I don't think the 용 yong in its name means dragon, it's just a way some words/syllables ending in "n" are transliterated in Korean. For comparison, "France" is 프랑스 Peu'rang'seu. -- Nick15 (talk) 18:23, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
  • UPDATE: It's based on the Japanese and English names, since they all basically use the same etymology:
  • 비비 bibi comes from the Korean transliteration of the word "vivid" (비비드 bibideu)
(as 美 in Korean is 미 mi, not bi like in Japanese)
  • yong comes from the Korean transliteration of "papillon" (파피용 papiyong). -- Nick15 (talk) 19:40, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Vivillon Forms

According to the article there are 18 different forms. Currently I was able to pull out of the PGL 8 versions. Unfortunately, there are rather small. Should we use these as a placeholders, for example, till we get HQ versions? Here's an example of one of the forms: e175c2.png
In another subject, do we have an official source for the name of the forms? I have seen them around the internet, but I cannot find an official source with their names. --Sekuiyatalk 16:03, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Addressing the second part, the names of the patterns are found in Vivillon's dex entry for each different pattern found (for example, mine lists Meadow, Continental, Polar, and Modern Pattern). That's as official as it gets. Luna Tiger * the Arc Toraph 16:12, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
Oh, you're right! Guess I should have explored the Dex a little more. Now, regarding those little images... --Sekuiyatalk 16:21, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

I would just like to add that there are 2 more forms that have been discovered. TheJaceX (talk) 18:48, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Pics: [1] The pattern of the one on the left is quite obviously based on a Poké Ball, and the one on the right seems to be some sort of floral pattern. Luigi-San 22:11, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
Neither of those are confirmed. Until they are, they will not be noted. Ataro (talk) 22:48, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Vivillon's Forms

Shouldn't there be a section about which area gets which Vivillon form? Or should that be on the variant Pokémon article? KyuremTrainer (talk) 20:53, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Well, we can try to find a way. But currently, there's just too many to list, dunno how we're gonna fit it on the article without making it huge. --Sekuiyatalk 11:45, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
Okay... WHOA I just checked a website... The table is gonna be loooooong...
(To start the list though, I know being in Minnesota makes you have a Modern Vivillon :D) KyuremTrainer (talk) 00:32, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
That would go here. Ataro (talk) 18:52, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

All we'd have to do is generate a world map color coded to represent the different areas where certain Vivillion can be found. Just use a eyedropper to select the most abundant color on each Vivillion and use that as their color code. From the looks of it from my research, the hardest thing would be the US. However, that's only a mildly difficult task since most people grew up drawing the US at some point. I know I had to draw it every year in school. I could pop out a color coded world map in a few days, five at the most if I play too much Y. Yamitora1 (talk) 09:19, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Here's the geographic locations for each pattern, as listed in the Japanese guidebook (thanks to bluesun). I have them in much higher resolution, but I figured this was enough (since otherwise they take ages to load). [2] [3] --SnorlaxMonster 09:40, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Someone's made a map of the world denoting the locations of all of Vivillon's patterns: [4] Luigi-San 22:04, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
Is it good quality, also would that person allow their work to be posted here? It would be best just to make one for the site itself. Yamitora1 (talk) 18:57, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

I need Data for Alaska, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont and Washington DC. So far the U.S.A. has 4 different patterns with Modern being the most common. I have the US map 90% finish, just need those states' data.Yamitora1 (talk) 03:17, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Is there a thread (or whatever they're called) on the forum that lists where what form is found, I know the forum has a rather large community from all over the world so if not we're missing out on a good chance to collect data.Yamitora1 (talk) 23:28, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
There is this thread, in which users are invited to post their regions and Vivillon patterns. —Minimiscience (talk) 00:16, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, hopefully this will help fill in some of the gaps.Yamitora1 (talk) 08:01, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
There are maps of all the Vivillon regions in the Japanese guidebook by the way. You can see them here. Bluesun (talk) 13:12, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
Hrm, those tables only have 662 places listed. From my estimate of the total possible count, I think there should be more possible places than that. Though I suppose it's possible some countries may only have one form no matter which location you choose and the table could have some (single) special entry for that, lowering the overall count... Tiddlywinks (talk) 16:12, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

i love vivillons, would be nice to have the map all coloured in even tho some countries arent appear in the 3DS legally. Some countries would be obvious to fill in the gaps nicely like Cuba for Archipelgo... Hehe -Mew Jadester-tp- 13:45, 2 February 2014 (UTC) well gents i have put in ALOT of progress into filling the gaps on the maps and the data (with thanks to Tiddlywinks). Its a pity that the owner of imgur page abt Vivillons have taken down the survey and wouldnt update it anymore. At least Bulbagarden would be the final resting place for these data I have gathered =) -Mew Jadester-tp- 13:35, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

Progress update
South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong - all done.
Europe is almost done - with large amount of India and not much of Russia left to go
Then I'll deal with NA soon (yep, I do own both NA and EU 3DS consoles :3)
-Mew Jadester-tp- 13:41, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
If you send your data to me, it would be a great help. Also SnorlaxMonster, those links you gave me have images that are way too small and generic to help with my endeavor to make a color coded mapYamitora1 (talk) 15:16, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
Yamitora1, can I get to see that work of yours? I am wiki illiterate(sp?) so i have the data done on a map in paint (based on image i found on wiki months ago - the same one the imgur guy used) and my data are entered on Excel, just the same way as imgur guy did but to speed up the research, i used the data tiddlywinks extracted so i can keep track and highlight so i know what is missing and need to take care of. Geography is one of my interests so researching these Vivillons (my fave) is alot of great fun! -Mew Jadester-tp- 15:38, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Vivillion.png

At the moment I am focusing on the United States since that data is hit and miss. It seems a large number of people only set the United States, but did not specify the state in which they live. The white states are states I have no data for. Also some data might be incorrect due to the US being Modern Vivillion by default should the state not be set.

I am currently using a free to use Vector maps of the as a data place holders; however, once I am able to get more in depth data I will generate a entirely new vector world map based on the data. I estimate I will generate about 4-5 Globe Maps of the world rotated to various degrees. Yamitora1 (talk) 16:14, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

hey it me again, i have done all of Europe/Oceania locations except for 1 in Russia, gotta charge my 3DS then i'll tackle that one. after that one I'll start working on American ones. Aww yeah, its taking time but loving it. -Mew Jadester-tp- 14:56, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
So, if I understand you, Mew Jadester, you're setting different locations on your 3DS and starting a new game and evolving Scatterbug to Vivillon to see what form that location has? If so, that's awesome! I'd love to see all the data you collected when you're done. I'd be happy to put it into wiki tables for the different forms. Yamitora's US map is pretty nice, but I definitely want full tables so people can actually search for their specific location. Tiddlywinks (talk) 15:36, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
A table might be better, especially since it seems places like France and Japan get multiple patterns from what I hear. Yamitora1 (talk) 23:17, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
If multiple patterns isn't a problem for the US, it shouldn't be a problem for France or Japan or any other country...
IMO, tables will be more reliable to read than maps (as well as providing searchability), and so they must be used. But well-done visuals are always a nice add-on. Tiddlywinks (talk) 00:30, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

Well, once I get the data we need we can incorporate both, no problem. Some people are more visual so both are useful tools.

The problem is that I have heard conflicting reports of Continental and High Planes Vivillion in states like Utah, New Mexico and Colorado.

Its been a while since I set up my 2DS, but I vaguely remember inputting my postal Zip code at some point (likely for eShop related purposes). Each state has hundreds of zip codes, and the US thousands of them altogether. In some bordering state, a zip code can be shared by both. Its such a complicated system that you can even have two zip codes (And Addresses, I did at once point) at the same time living in one house, or your neighbor a few doors down can have their own that is different from yours.

Like I said, I vaguely remember having to set my Zip code. It may have nothing to do with the patterns at all, but if it does have any influence at all on the Pattern generated, things can get messy. Yamitora1 (talk) 17:19, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

It's been a couple years since X and Y came out and we still don't have all the data for the Vivillon forms, but I think we should at least list one location for each pattern, since we have enough information to at least do that. --LavaringX (talk) 20:42, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Friend Safari Bug(?)

It seems that if you have a Vivillon in a Friend Safari, the little preview picture of it will never fill in and appear to be blank as if you hadn't yet encountered it. Would this be something the page should note? PowerPlantRaichu (talk) 17:29, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

I think that has something to do with there being so many patterns for itYamitora1 (talk) 18:56, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Are we gonna talk about it's National Dex number?

Maybe in the Trivia section... - unsigned comment from Checkmate824 (talkcontribs)

There's really nothing notable about it. It's just a number. Crystal Talian 16:04, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Pattern determined when generated

The current description states that the pattern is determined by Original Trainer. This should either be reworded or a piece of trivia added to clarify what happens in the case of eggs. In the case of an egg, the pattern is determined by the game the egg was generated in. Thus it is possible to have a Vivillon with a pattern that does not match the geographic location of it's Original Trainer. Hamner (talk) 06:41, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Reworded. Thanks for brining that point up :) レシイラムtalk 10:24, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

actually there is 20 forms

hidden in pokemon x/y, there is 2 unused Vivillon forms, 1 of them looks a pokeball pattern. --Igor The Mii (talk) 19:34, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

As you can see above, this has already been discussed and we won't be adding them until they are confirmed. Nobody has been able to duplicate that hacker's results, so we have no way of knowing they aren't a hoax. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 19:39, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

'i have a hunch that the floral form would be China's but who knows ;p -Mew Jadester-tp- 13:36, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

Anime pronounces it Viviyon

Should it be mentioned that the anime pronounces its name as Viviyon, just like its Japanese name?Yamitora1 (talk) 15:57, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

It's not particularly notable since both names are based off of French which pronounce 'llon' as 'yon', --It's Funktastic~!話してください 16:05, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
Oh, well I only asked because unless you know the french thing you probably, like me, would be pronouncing it Viv-illion like I have for the last umpteen months. I thought mentioning something about the Iyon thing would help clarify things.Yamitora1 (talk) 17:43, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

EV Yield 1 HP EV, 1 Sp.Atk EV and 1 Speed EV

I just defeated a Vivillion in the Friend Safari with a 0 EV Charmeleon, and it gained 1 HP EV, 1 Sp.Atk EV and 1 Speed EV from the battle. I repeated it after resetting using a reset bag and the same EVs were rewarded.Yamitora1 (talk) 03:54, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

Showing the patterns in the in-game order?

I was wondering about the in-game order (the order showing in the Pokedex in X/Y) the other day, and this youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OcGT99YKxA) shows you the order. I think it makes sense to show not only alphabetically but also in the in-game order too here. The order is: Icy Snow, Polar, Tundra, Continental, Garden, Elegant, Meadow, Modern, Marine, Archipelago, High Plains, Sandstorm, River, Monsoon, Savanna, Sun, Ocean, Jungle. The two hidden patterns are still unknown for now~ --- Ping 10:34, 25 February 2014 (EST)

Trivia

I feel like it's worth mentioning that this is the only "early three stage bug line" that doesn't follow the 7/10 evolution levels standard that Caterpie, Weedle, and Wurmple follow, especially since it follows the same metamorphosis idea. Jdthebud (talk) 17:00, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Neither do Sewaddle and Venipede. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 17:04, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
True, but those are not based on metamorphosis insects (larvae->cocoon/pupa->adult butterfly/moth), which is the point I was going for. Scatterbug and Spewpa share moveset limitations (String Shot, Harden, etc.) with the other bug families I mentioned as well. Jdthebud (talk) 08:59, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
It's best if you could've just stuck to one talk page when discussing this. They're practically asking the same thing. I feel it's a bit too specific and, like any trivia regarding starters, too small of a group to note.--ForceFire 09:29, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
Venipede and Sewaddle do go through cocoon phases if you check Swadloon's origin/name origin and Whirlipede's Pokédex entries ("hard shell", "motionless", "storing energy"). And it's not fair to limit the last stage to only butterflies or moths...especially when Beedrill is a bee/wasp...
But in any case, like Force Fire says, 4 families is a small group (especially when two of them were introduced together). Tiddlywinks (talk) 09:42, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Meadow Form Trivia

The meadow form of Vivillon can only obtained in France. Incidentally, this form is the one seen in the official artwork and is used by Viola in her battles. This shows more of Kalos's French inspirations. Is this notable as trivia? Jigglyppuff8 (talk) 13:00, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

It's not, because no, the Meadow Pattern is not only found in France; it's found in at least five other European countries. Kai * the Arc Toraph 13:39, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Fancy Pattern Image

It seems distorted somehow on the official Vivillon page, and yet the actual image looks fine. It's also represented in the Forms page perfectly fine. IDK if this is the right place to bring this up though... --BlackButterfree (talk) 00:55, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Possible name origin no one will agree with

The name sounds a lot like "Vivian". Coincidence worth noting?- unsigned comment from Nutter Butter (talkcontribs)

I found a nifty way to avoid to express disagreement by saying that the name Vivian basically comes from Latin vivus, as does vivid, which is already on the page. Nescientist (talk) 13:16, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Infobox color

Since each form now has its own Pokédex color, shouldn't the color listed in the infobox match the form used for the image? I assume it's currently based on which form comes first by internal index number, but since the only form it applies to is not shown in the infobox, it's a bit of an inconsistency there. Hyper Turtwig (talk) 23:38, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

The color, like the colors for other PokemonInfoboxes, are based on its type, not what its physical colors are.--ForceFire 06:35, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
Hyper Turtwig means, that since Meadow Pattern Vivillon is showed in the infobox, the color should be "pink", instead of "white".--Rocket Grunt 15:52, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

SV Postcard Link/Different Patterns in SV

As of right now, the top section of the page reads that Vivllon that originated in Paldea are fancy pattern, but now using Pokémon go you can send a postcard from a real-world location and receive Gimmighol coins and Vivillon of a different pattern will begin to spawn. Example; I have a postcard from a pokestop in Southeastern Texas and I sent that post card to Scarlet or Violet then High-Plains pattern Vivillon will spawn.

All that to say; I feel like that is something significant that should be addressed on the top description area.- unsigned comment from Chickoritaboy11 (talkcontribs)

Yeah that makes sense. Anzasquiddles (talk) 16:19, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
