The Pal Pad is the device into which you register codes of other players. When in that device, however, it asks you for a "Friend Code". On the Nintendo 3DS, there is a feature - SEPARATE FROM POKEMON - called Friend Codes. These are not compatible with the codes within the game - that is, when one of the 3DS friend codes are entered into the pal pad, an error is generated saying that it is a wrong Friend code.

However, if you enter the 3DS code into its address book (what is its name?), the user is registered, and appears to be seen within Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 - perhaps other games.

This is confusing.- unsigned comment from Lvirden (talkcontribs)
