Chinese pronunciation

Are we sure that the pronunciation of 蛸 is shāo/saau1 and not xiāo/siu1? These pages [1][2] suggest that the xiāo pronunciation is for octopuses, and the shāo pronunciation is for long-legged spiders. Kalexchu (talk) 20:57, 7 January 2020 (UTC)

Googling the pronunciation doesn't produce much of a definitive result. Wiktionary treats the two pronunciations as interchangeable in the context of the octopus. I've asked some locals, but it is a rather obscure word and opinions are mixed. Going by entries from older dictionaries, 螵蛸 has also been used to refer to some types of cephalopods, so I suppose it would be better to lean towards the latter one. --超龍「Chao」 01:31, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
