There's not supposed to be any ambiguity. To "catch" a Pokémon vs to "capture" a Pokémon are meant to be completely separate verbs with different definitions referring to different actions done by different people. As the first article mentions, the English anime dub has done a very bad job of distinguishing the two, while the Japanese anime and the games do it fine. Though it seems as of Gen V the second term has started to leak into the games as well.... Except for official use, every instance where an article refers to a Trainer "capturing" a Pokémon using a Poké Ball (as opposed to a Ranger doing so with a Styler) is wrong. Captured Pokémon vs Capture Styler
There's not supposed to be any ambiguity. To "catch" a Pokémon vs to "capture" a Pokémon are meant to be completely separate verbs with different definitions referring to different actions done by different people. As the first article mentions, the English anime dub has done a very, very bad job of distinguishing the two, while the Japanese anime and the games do it fine. Though it seems as of Gen V the second term has started to leak into the games as well.... (Is this just the international games? I'd like to see which term the Japanese games use.) Except for official use, every instance where an article refers to a Trainer "capturing" a Pokémon using a Poké Ball (as opposed to a Ranger doing so with a Styler) is wrong.
