Sunkern (Japanese: ヒマナッツ Himanuts) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Sunflora when exposed to a Sun Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Sunkern is a mostly yellow seed-like Pokémon with a small sprout growing out of its top. Sunkern has triangular spike-like protrusions on top of its head, encircling the sprout. Sunkern’s body has three broad brown vertical stripes. Two of the stripes start jaggedly above Sunkern’s dark eyes, continuing downward. The other stripe is directly below Sunkern’s mouth. Since Sunkern’s eyelids are brown, the brown streak patterning appears uninterrupted when Sunkerns’ eyes are closed.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

At this stage of development, it is fairly weak. Although it has been stated that its only means of defending itself is violently thrashing its leaves at the attacker, it is capable of using a variety of Grass-type moves.

Behavior

Sunkern have a tendency to fall from the sky on early mornings, though usually without any predictability. Sunkern tries to move as little as it possibly can, since it tries to conserve all the nutrients it has stored in its body for evolution. A year after a cold summer, the population of Sunkern explodes.

Habitat

Sunkern are commonly found in Kanto & Johto, but there have also been sightings in Sinnoh. They have also been imported to the Hoenn Safari Zone. Since they are known to randomly fall from the sky, they may also live up in the Troposphere, or even the Stratosphere.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

It only drinks morning dew, found under plants' leaves, as well as its own. But it is sometimes found with the Coba Berry. Whether it eats this as well is unknown.

Major appearances

Sunkern made its debut appearance in Moving Pictures Ash, Brock, Misty, and Todd Snap found it frozen in a field. Ash eventually evolved it using his Sun Stone from the The Bug Stops Here, and it summoned more Sunflora so that Sophia and Marcello could take a picture for their golden anniversary.

Minor appearances

It also appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part One.

Sunkern also made a brief appearance in Giratina and the Sky Warrior.

A Sunkern's fossilized leaf made an appearance in a flashback in Ancient Family Matters!.

Pokémon Adventures

In Volume 8, Gold encounters a herd of Sunkern escaping from a Skarmory. He captures one of the Sunkern to help defeat the Skarmory with Exbo's Ember attack using its jumping ability. Although not much of a battler and used sparingly, in Volume 14, she evolves into Sunflora and uses its Sunny Day to power up the Typhlosion's fire attacks, helping it combat the Masked Man.

Trivia

  • Going only by base stat total, Sunkern is the weakest Pokémon, with a total of 180 points. Despite this, it is stronger than some Pokémon in some aspects (such as Speed, at 30, beating several slow Pokémon such as Munchlax) and has a greater movepool than others.
    • Ironically, Sunkern is one of the few Pokémon that can have 5 stars in each of its Pokéthlon stats. The others are Ditto, Mew, Giratina's Origin Forme and Arceus.
  • Sunkern shares the same species name as Bulbasaur and its evolutions. They are all known as the Seed Pokémon.
  • Sunkern's official artwork more closely resembled its shiny form in Gold and Silver than its regular form. This was somewhat rectified in Crystal, although the artwork was still more similar to its shiny sprite; this discrepancy was fully rectified in Generation III.
  • In The Official Pokémon Handbook 3, published by Scholastic Corporation, Sunkern's data says its height is 0'01" when it is actually 1'00".
  • Until the release of Generation IV, Sunkern was the only Generation II Pokémon to evolve via an evolutionary stone.

Origin

Sunkern is based on a shooting sunflower seed.

Name origin

Sunkern's name is a combination of sunflower and kernel. Its Japanese name may be a combination of 向日葵 himawari, sunflower, and the English word, nuts. It may also refer to 夏 natsu, summer.

In other languages

  • German: Sonnkern - From Sonne (sun) and kernal.
  • French: Tournegrin - From tournesol (sunflower) and a corruption of graine (seed).
  • Korean: 해너츠 Haeneocheu
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 向日種子 Xiàng Rì Zhǒng Zǐ - Literally "Sun-facing seed". 向日 can be derived from 向日葵 Xiàngrìkuí (sunflower).
