Sound-based move

A sound-based move (Japanese: 音技(おとわざ) sound move or 音(おと)の技(わざ) sound move) is any move that uses sound. Sound-based moves have a variety of unique properties and effects. Sound moves like Sing have existed since Generation I, but in Generation III they became a mechanic.

In the games

In the core series games, sound-based moves have the following effects:

• Pokémon with the Soundproof Ability are unaffected by other Pokémon's sound-based moves, except Heal Bell in Generation V.
• Pokémon affected by Throat Chop cannot use sound-based moves for two turns.
• Sound-based moves used by a Pokémon with Liquid Voice become Water-type moves.
• Sound-based moves used by a Pokémon with Punk Rock are boosted by 30%. Pokémon with Punk Rock also take half damage from sound-based moves.
• If a Pokémon holding a Throat Spray uses a sound-based move, the Throat Spray is consumed and boosts the holder's Special Attack by one stage.
• From Generation VI onward, all sound-based moves that can target Pokémon other than the user can hit Pokémon behind a substitute.

Abilities

Name Effect Soundproof Grants immunity to sound-based moves. Liquid Voice Has all of the Pokémon's sound-based moves become Water-type. Punk Rock Boosts the Pokémon's sound-based moves by 30%, and halves the damage it takes from sound-based moves.
