("50% of current HP" has been uncontested for so long that I'm suspicious of a newbie's attempt to change it. Can someone please test whether it's always been 50% of max, 50% of current, or if this changed from one to the other in some generation?)

In battle
Soft-Boiled restores the user's current HP by 50% of its maximumfact, while not exceeding its maximum. It will fail if the user's current HP is already equal to its maximum HP.
Generation I
Soft-Boiled restores up to 50% of the user's maximum HP, rounded down. It will fail if the user's current HP is already equal to its maximum HP.
Soft-Boiled has a PP of 10.

In the Generation I handheld games, Soft-Boiled will also fail if the difference between the user's maximum HP and current HP is 255 modulo 256 (i.e. if this difference is 255 or 511). This does not occur in Pokémon Stadium.

In Generation I core series only, a bug causes Soft-Boiled to fail if the difference between the user's current and maximum HP is 255 or 511 (any number that leaves a remainder of 255 when divided by 256), in addition to failing on a difference of 0. This was fixed in Stadium and all future generations.
Generation II to IV
Soft-Boiled no longer fails if the difference between the user's maximum HP and current HP is 255 modulo 256.

Soft-Boiled can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing Egg Bomb to give an extra four appeal points if used in the next turn.
Soft-Boiled can be used as the first move of a Pokémon Contest combination, causing Egg Bomb to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn.

If powered up by a Z-Crystal into Z-Soft-Boiled, all of the user's lowered stats are reset.
Generation V to VIII
Soft-Boiled now restores 50% of the user's maximum HP, rounded up.

In Pokémon UNITE, Soft-Boiled is Blissey's second move. It is obtained by evolving at level 4 and upgrading Heal Pulse into it instead of Safeguard. The user throws an egg to an ally; healing the user and the designated ally. Holds 2 uses in reserve and cannot be used more than once every 2s. Soft-Boiled (Japanese: タマゴうみ Egg Lay), formatted as Softboiled prior to Pokémon X and Y, is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I. It was TM41 in Generation I. It is the signature move of Chansey, Blissey, and in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Happiny as well.

Effect

In battle

Generation I

151Mew.png This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason: Needs clarification on whether failure glitch occurs in the Japanese Pokémon Stadium
You can discuss this on the talk page.

Generation II to IV

Soft-Boiled no longer fails if the difference between the user's maximum HP and current HP is 255 modulo 256.

Soft-Boiled can be used as the first move of a Pokémon Contest combination, causing Egg Bomb to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn.

Generation V to VIII

Soft-Boiled now restores 50% of the user's maximum HP, rounded up. If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Soft-Boiled, all of the user's lowered stats are reset.

Generation IX

Soft-Boiled's PP has been reduced from 10 to 5.

Outside of battle

Prior to Generation VII and in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Soft-Boiled can also be used outside of battle to transfer some of the user's HP to another party Pokémon. Each use will transfer 20% of the user's HP, up to the target's maximum HP. The move will not work if the user has 20% or less HP left.

Pokémon Rumble Rush

In Pokémon Rumble Rush, all status moves including Soft-Boiled could only be used by opposing Pokémon and could not be obtained on any caught Pokémon. Soft-Boiled could be seen as a move used by Boss Chansey and Blissey.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Soft-Boiled is Blissey's second move. It is obtained by evolving at level 4 and upgrading Heal Pulse into it instead of Safeguard. The user throws an egg to an ally; healing the user and the designated ally. Holds 2 uses in reserve and cannot be used more than once every 2s. At level 10, the attack can hold an extra use in reserve.

Trivia

 • Although the man who gives out TM41 in Generation I says that only Chansey can learn Soft-Boiled, it can also be taught to Mew.
 • Although Soft-Boiled is available in Pokémon Emerald as a Move Tutor move, no Pokémon naturally available in the game can learn the move; all Pokémon capable of using the Move Tutor must be traded into the game from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen or caught using an event item.
 • Male Pokémon can use this move despite its Japanese name being タマゴうみ Tamago Umi, which can be translated to "egg lay".
 • In Generation III, the status screen erroneously states that the move has 100% accuracy, even though it targets the user (thus it ignores accuracy and evasion checks).
 • In Generation III, if this move is used immediately after Brick Break, the egg that appears will be transparent rather than solid. This is only a graphical error and doesn't affect the execution of the move.
 • In the 1.0 release of the English versions of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, whenever the player uses Soft-Boiled on a Pokémon that is fainted or at full health, the game erroneously states "This item can't be used on that POKéMON." In the 1.1 release, the word "item" was removed and the message correctly says "This can't be used on that POKéMON." This error does not exist in the Japanese versions, meaning it was a localization oversight.
 • The TM for Soft-Boiled can be taught to the fewest number of Pokémon of any TM.
