Slugma is a limbless Pokémon composed of {{wp|magma}}. Its body is bright red, fading to a duller red along its extremities. It has large, round, yellow eyes with small pupils. Slugma's head is ovoid with flame-like extensions spreading upward from its eyes and round, stable drops of magma dangling from its upper jaw. Its lower body is irregular in shape, and occasionally emits bubbles.
Slugma is a limbless {{wp|gastropoda|gastropod}} {{wp|mollusk}} {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} composed of {{wp|magma}}. Its body is bright red, fading to a duller red along its extremities. Its lower body is irregular in shape, and occasionally emits bubbles.

Slugma's circulatory system is composed entirely of magma, which delivers vital nutrients and oxygen to its organs. In order to prevent its body from cooling and hardening, Slugma neither sleeps nor ever stops moving. If its body does begin to cool, it will become brittle and may break apart. Slugma constantly seeks warm places, and gathers with other members of its species in {{DL|List of Pokémon by habitat|Mountain Pokémon|mountains}} and volcanoes.

Slugma takes magma baths to heal itself. It is believed that when volcanoes were more active in ancient times, Slugma were seen more often.

===Origin===
===Origin===
Slugma is based on a {{wp|slug}} with a body of {{wp|lava}}. It may also be based on the {{wp|Cherufe}}, evil creatures of rock and magma that inhabit the magma pools found deep within Chilean volcanoes. Slugma's {{shiny}} form may be based on cooled, hardened {{wp|magma}}, which becomes a dark, metallic color. The form may also be based on {{wp|solder}}, a liquid metal that is extremely hot and hardens when it cools, similarly to lava.

Slugma (Japanese: マグマッグ Magmag) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves into Magcargo starting at level 38.

Biology

Slugma is a limbless gastropod mollusk Pokémon composed of magma.

Slugma's circulatory system is composed entirely of magma, which delivers vital nutrients and oxygen to its organs. To prevent its body from cooling and hardening, Slugma neither sleeps nor ever stops moving. If its body does begin to cool, it will become brittle and may break apart. Slugma constantly seeks warm places and gathers with other members of its species in mountains and volcanoes. Slugma takes magma baths to heal itself. It is believed that when volcanoes were more active in ancient times, Slugma were seen more often.

Evolution

Slugma evolves into Magcargo.

Slugma stays near the lava because if its magma body ever cools, it will harden and make this Pokémon unable to move. It often burns its food with its own heat, so eating can be a tricky task for it.

Slugma in the anime

Major appearances

Slugma debuted in Love, Pokémon Style, under the ownership of Macy. It was used in her Silver Conference battle against Ash, where it battled Totodile but was soon recalled. It then battled Phanpy and was eventually defeated by its Take Down. At the end of the episode, it had evolved into Magcargo off-screen.

In What You Seed is What You Get, Natasha used a Slugma, Grovyle, and Electrode to protect her watermelon patch. Slugma and Grovyle battled Ash's Corphish and Treecko, and in the end, Natasha won.

Flannery owns two Slugma nicknamed Mag and Meg, which first appeared in Poetry Commotion!. Mag later evolved into Magcargo. In Going, Going, Yawn, Flannery used Meg during her Gym battle against Ash. It battled Ash's Treecko and Corphish before losing to Pikachu.

In the Hoopa's Surprise Ring Adventures short Heated Battle, Hoopa summoned a Slugma, Rapidash, Magmortar, and Heatran. They all used Fire-type attacks to set Ash and Pikachu on fire.

In The Pendant That Starts It All (Part Two), a Slugma appeared as one of the Pokémon living on the Brave Olivine. It is often seen in the engine room helping to power the ship by burning coal in the furnace provided by Carkol.

Minor appearances

Trivia

Origin

Slugma appears to be based on a slug with a body of lava. It may also be based on the Cherufe, evil creatures of rock and magma that inhabit the magma pools found deep within Chilean volcanoes. Slugma's Shiny form may be based on cooled, hardened magma, which becomes a dark, metallic color. The form may also be based on solder, a liquid metal that is extremely hot and hardens when it cools, similarly to lava.

Name origin

Slugma may be a combination of slug and magma.

Magmag may be a combination of magma and slug.
