A signpost is a small sign on a route or within a city that tells a player certain pieces of information. Most of them are well-maintained, however, there are a few that end up worn away, making the text on them hard to read, such as the sign outside the Harbor Inn in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. Other signs have been defaced, such as the signs outside the Pokémon Trainer Fan Club of Lilycove City and on an island in the north of Route 110.

Most often, these objects tell players where they are located, at least in Generation I. Since Pokémon Crystal, there is a small text box which pops up every time players enter another location, so most of the location-describing signposts are merely residual.

Sometimes, there will be Trainer Tips written on the signpost, designed for novice players to give helpful tips.
