Signature moves are moves that can only be learned by a single Pokémon or its evolutionary relatives by level-up, (unless the move cannot be learned by any Pokémon via level-up, in which case other methods are considered) usually in the same evolutionary line. Note that any of the moves included in this classification (except for Chatter) can be learned by Smeargle by use of Sketch, making Sketch and Chatter the only moves that are truly exclusive to one Pokémon legitimately. Also, some of these moves can be passed down via breeding to other Pokémon.

A signature move (Japanese: 専用技 exclusive move) is a move that can normally only be learned by a single Pokémon, evolutionary family, or Legendary group.

Most signature moves are learned by leveling up. Despite being signature moves of a particular species, other Pokémon can still sometimes learn the move through other means. Some signature moves can also be inherited via breeding or are known by certain gift or event Pokémon. Additionally, Smeargle can learn most signature moves via its own signature move, Sketch.

* Although several Pokémon have been able to learn Sing since its introduction, the move is heavily associated with Jigglypuff due to the Jigglypuff in the anime.

Likewise, Umbreon's Moonlight matches Espeon's Morning Sun, though others can learn it even in its introductory generation.
* Until Generation III, Koffing and Weezing were the only Poison-type Pokémon capable of learning Smog, and prior to Generation VII were the only Poison-type Pokémon to learn the move by level-up.

* Suicune, being known as the Aurora Pokémon, is associated with the move Aurora Beam.
* Although Clefairy can learn Meteor Mash by leveling up in any Generation III game, the only Pokémon that were able to learn it legally before release of were Metang and its evolved form, Metagross.
* Although Blaze Kick was no longer Blaziken's signature move from Generation III, it remains the only Fire-type Pokémon to learn it by level up.
* Ditto has Transform as its only move and is most associated with it; however, Mew is also able to learn it.
* Castform was the only Pokémon capable of learning Weather Ball prior to Generation IV. However, due to Shadow moves only being present in Generation III, it remains the only Pokémon capable of taking advantage of Weather Ball's ??? effect during Shadow Sky.
* Unown can learn only Hidden Power; however, almost every other Pokémon can learn it via TM10 in Generation II and beyond.
* Although Clefairy can learn Meteor Mash by leveling up in any Generation III game, the only Pokémon that could have it legitimately before release of were Metang and its evolved form, Metagross.

* Each of Rotom's forms has its own signature move that cannot be carried over to any of its other forms. However, none of these five moves are exclusive to it.
* Although several Pokémon can learn it by TM, until Generation III only Diglett and Dugtrio could learn Dig by level up.
* No Pokémon can learn V-create outside of event distributions. Victini was the first to gain access to it and is often associated with the move. However, later, a Rayquaza with V-create was available as the winner of a popularity poll held in Japan in 2011, making it no longer Victini's signature move.
* Until Generation III, Koffing and Weezing were the only Poison-type Pokémon capable of learning Smog. As of Generation IV, they are still the only Poison-types to learn the move naturally, and all other Poison-types must be bred the move to have it.
* The move Razor Shell is tied to Oshawott's evolutionary line, although it can also be learned by Shellder, Binacle, Barbaracle, Corphish, Crawdaunt, and Golisopod.
* Though many others can learn it through TM or breeding, Skarmory is the only Pokémon to learn Steel Wing by leveling up.
* The Venipede family are the only Pokémon besides Golem and Guzzlord which can learn Steamroller.
** Also, this trait is shared with Volt Change, which only Emolga can learn via level-up.
* In Generation V, Sacred Sword was exclusively learned by the Swords of Justice, being a signature move of a Legendary group rather than an evolutionary family.
* Prior to Generation V, Vigoroth is the only Pokémon to learn Focus Punch by leveling up.
** Similarly, Fusion Flare and Fusion Bolt are exclusively learned by Reshiram and White Kyurem, and Zekrom and Black Kyurem, respectively. Kyurem's forms are the result of absorbing Reshiram or Zekrom, and thus gain some of their traits and powers.
* Porygon-Z is the only Pokémon to learn Trick Room by leveling up, although that move can be learned via TM92.

* Almost every Pokémon is able to learn Facade via TM42. However, Chimchar is the only one to learn it by leveling up prior to Generation V.
In the anime
*The move Razor Shell, although it can also be learned by Shellder, Oshawott's evolutionary line are tied to this move.

* Although only Panpour and Simipour are the only Pokémon to learn Scald by leveling up, other Pokémon can learn it via TM55.
In the anime, it is uncommon for specific moves to be explicitly stated to be exclusive to a certain Pokémon species.
** Also, Pansage is currently the only Pokémon to learn Grass Knot by leveling up, other Pokémon can learn it via TM86.

*Sacred Sword is not technically considered a signature move in the traditional sense because it is not involved in a sole evolutionary line, but it is uniquely learned by the musketeer trio.
Although some moves were occasionally referred to as a Pokémon's "special attack" during the original series, in most of these cases, the move in question actually wasn't that Pokémon's signature move. A notable exception to this was in Holiday Hi-Jynx, where Ash's Pokédex correctly referred to Lovely Kiss as the "special attack" of Jynx.
* Although Blaze Kick was no longer Blaziken's signature move from Generation III, it remains the only Fire-type Pokémon to learn it by level up.
* The Venipede family are the only Pokémon besides Golem which can learn  Hard Roller. They're also the only Bug - types to learn it.
* Audino is the only Pokémon to learn Secret Power as of Generation V. It's because of the removal of TM which teached that move.

Trivia
The concept was also mentioned during a quiz challenge in Classroom Training!, where Candice stated that Pay Day could only be learned by Meowth.
* So far, Hitmonlee has had the most signature moves, with four. However, three of them were only temporarily Hitmonlee's signature moves, and now can be learned by other Pokémon. The other was also previously available to other Pokémon through TMs and Move Tutors.

** However, as of Generation V the Pokémon who possess the most signature moves is Vespiquen, with three, all of which are associated with Bug.

Zekrom and Reshiram using Bolt Strike and Blue Flare, their signature moves

A signature move (Japanese: 専用技 exclusive move) is a move that can normally only be learned by a single Pokémon, evolutionary family, or Legendary group.

Most signature moves are learned by leveling up. Despite being signature moves of a particular species, other Pokémon can still sometimes learn the move through other means. Some signature moves can also be inherited via breeding or are known by certain gift or event Pokémon. Additionally, Smeargle can learn most signature moves via its own signature move, Sketch.

One-off signature moves

Victini using Fusion Flare, Fusion Bolt, and V-create

Moves commonly associated with certain Pokémon

In the anime

Meowth using Pay Day in the anime

In the anime, it is uncommon for specific moves to be explicitly stated to be exclusive to a certain Pokémon species.

The concept was also mentioned during a quiz challenge in Classroom Training!, where Candice stated that Pay Day could only be learned by Meowth.
