Shuckle (Japanese: ツボツボ Tsubotsubo) is a dual-type Bug/Rock Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Shuckle in its shell

Shuckle bears resemblance to a small turtle. Shuckle is encased in a very hard red shell that has many holes in it. Its body inside the shell is yellow and presumably very soft. Shuckle's limbs appear limp until in use and are completely able.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Shuckle are well known for having high defenses, surpassing all other Pokémon in both physical and Special Defense. However, Shuckle's other stats are incredibly low, being either lowest or very near to lowest of all Pokémon.

In Generation II, if a Shuckle is made to hold a standard Berry, it will in time break down into Berry Juice, which doubles its effectiveness. If held even longer, the Berry Juice will harden and turn into a Rare Candy. This functionality was removed from later generations.

Behavior

Rather than actively hunting and foraging for food like most other Pokémon, it tends to collect Berries and store them in its shell. The Berries inside are liquefied and fermented by the Shuckle's digestive juices, which are then consumed by the Shuckle. These juices are also used to dissolve rocks for the Shuckle to hide under.

Habitat

Shuckle tend to hide under rocks and fallen logs for long periods of time.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

This Pokémon's main diet consists of Berries, which it collects and stores in its shell.

Major appearances

In A Better Pill to Swallow, an old man was using the Berry Juice that Shuckle makes to create medicine. One of the Shuckle that he befriended was a purple Shuckle whose Berry Juice attracted Pokémon to anyone who drank it. Because of this, Team Rocket made it their mission to steal it.

Butch's Shuckle debuted in Sleight of Sand!.

Conway used a Shuckle in his battle against Ash in Working on a Right Move!.

Minor appearances

Shiny Shuckle in the anime

A Shuckle was one of the residents of Big Town in Pikachu & Pichu.

A Shuckle appeared on a poster in Imitation Confrontation.

A picture of a Shuckle appeared in Hocus Pokémon.

A Shuckle appeared in the opening of Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.

A Shuckle also appeared in To Thine Own Pokémon Be True!.

A Shuckle appeared in Dressed for Jess Success!.

Another Shuckle appeared in Double-Time Battle Training! under the ownership of Rebecca.

A Shuckle made a brief cameo in SS024, outside Professor Rowan's lab.

In the manga

Orm and his Shuckle

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Shuckle first appeared with Kurt. Kurt's Shuckle helps the Poké Ball craftsman make his special Poké Balls.

Shuckle's most major appearance is in Volume 23, under the control of Orm, in his battles against Professor Oak (which he won with ease) and Oak's grandson Blue (which he lost eventually).

Another Shuckle was seen under Pike Queen Lucy's command, where it showed off its fair deftness by badly poisoning Emerald's Starmie (as well as take a number of attacks) before being washed out by a Surf. She hasn't used it since.

Trivia

  • Shuckle has the highest base Defense and Special Defense stats, both being at 230.
  • Shuckle has the lowest Attack and Special Attack stat of all Bug-type Pokémon.
    • By using Power Trick, Shuckle can temporarily reach a pseudo base Attack stat of 230, which would be the highest of all Pokémon.
  • Shuckle is tied with Munchlax for the lowest Speed of all Pokémon.
  • Shuckle is tied with Feebas and Bonsly for the lowest Special Attack of all Pokémon.
  • Shuckle couldn't learn any Bug-type moves before Pokémon Platinum, or Rock-type moves by leveling up prior to Generation V, despite being a Bug/Rock Pokémon.
  • Despite Shuckle being described as having limp, weak muscles, it is able to learn Strength.
  • Shuckle is one of the few Pokémon to have official art for its Shiny form. It can also be seen in its Shiny form in a game at the Fun Zone section of Pokémon.com.
  • In Generation II, Shuckle is the only Pokémon that can learn Sweet Scent by breeding.
  • Despite being weak to Water-type moves and being unable to use the move Surf, it appears in the sea in Pal Park.
  • Shuckle is the only Pokémon based on fungus that is not part Grass-type.
  • Shuckle has the most extreme stat distribution, being in the top three or bottom three of every base stat category.
  • A level 100 Shuckle can potentially deal the most damage in one single attack through the use of numerous stat boosters; by receiving the effects of Helping Hand from two allies in a triple battle, holding a Metronome, Power Trick, a Skill Swap to Pure Power, and 6 Attack boosts. Also, Shuckle's partner must have the Ability Flower Gift and the weather must be sunny. On the 5th turn of using a Defense Curl boosted Rollout consecutively without any misses, if used against a level 1 Ledyba, Yanma or Combee with minimum Defense stats, that have been hit with negative Defense modifiers (such as Screech), it can deal 641,688,048 damage with a critical hit.

Origin

Shuckle seems to be based on an endolith, an organism that lives inside porous rocks or animal shells or possibly an abalone. Fungi, also known as mold, are common endoliths; this explains why Shuckle is the mold Pokémon. It may also be based on scale insects – small, shelled parasites that produce a sweet fluid called honeydew that attracts other insects. Shuckle may have been based on a variety of mollusks, as it shares some characteristics with them. Some examples of the similar characteristics are the shell, muscular and limp-seeming feet, the use of acids to receive food or to break down obstacles, likes fermented foods, and both also live close to the water. It may also be based on turtles or tortoises, appearance-wise.

Name origin

Shuckle may be a combination of shuck (a husk or pod) and barnacle or turtle.

Tsubotsubo may derive from 壷 tsubo (jar) and 富士壺 fujitsubo (barnacle).
