Shiftry (Japanese: ダーテング Dirteng) is a Grass/Dark-type Pokémon.

Pokédex entries

Pokémon Ruby
Shiftry is a mysterious Pokémon that is said to live atop towering trees dating back over a thousand years. It creates terrific windstorms with the fans it holds.
Pokémon Emerald
It is said to arrive on chilly, wintry winds. Feared from long ago as the guardian of forests, this Pokémon lives in a deep forest where people do not venture.

Name origin

Shiftry's name is probably a combination of the words shifty, deceitful, and tree. The teng in Dirteng probably refers to 天狗 Tengu, tricky Japanese goblins. Shiftry's German and French names also have Tengu incorporated in them.

Shiftry are probably based on Tengu, who are known for their long noses, cruel tricks, and ability to read minds.
