Reason: effects in Pokémon XD/Colo, the Distortion World

Generation III

In battle

Secret Power inflicts damage and has a 30% chance of causing a secondary effect on the target. The effect is determined by the environment. The attack's appearance also changes to another move's animation. The animation is determined by the environment also.

Terrain Secondary effect Animation
Building causes Paralysis Strength
Plain terrain Slam
Sand lowers Accuracy by one stage Mud Shot
Cave causes Flinching Bite
Rock causes Confusion Rock Throw
Tall grass inflicts Poison Needle Arm
Long grass causes Sleep Magical Leaf
Pond water lowers Speed by one stage BubbleBeam
Sea water lowers Attack by one stage Surf
Underwater lowers Defense by one stage Waterfall

Out of battle

Secret Power allows the user to create their own secret base. When used on certain trees, a vine drops down. When used on indented walls, a cave opens. When used on certain bushes, an entrance opens.

Generation IV

Secret Power inflicts damage and has a 30% chance of causing a secondary effect on the target. The effect is determined by the environment. The attack's appearance also changes to another move's animation. It no longer has the out-of-battle effect of creating a secret base, as these are now located in the Underground.

In a link battle, Secret Power uses the animation of Body Slam and has a chance to cause paralysis.

Terrain Secondary effect Animation
Building causes Paralysis Body Slam
Sand, plain terrain, and puddles lowers Accuracy by one stage Mud-Slap
Cave and rock causes Flinching Rock Throw
Tall grass causes Sleep Needle Arm
Water lowers Attack by one stage Water Pulse
Snow and ice causes Freezing Avalanche

In Pokémon Battle Revolution, Secret Power's animation is unique for all Colosseums, but the move still has different secondary effects depending on which Colosseum is being fought at:

Colosseum Secondary effect
Lagoon causes Paralysis
Gateway lowers Attack by one stage
Main Street causes Paralysis
Waterfall causes Sleep
Neon causes Paralysis
Crystal causes Flinching
Sunny Park causes Sleep
Magma causes Flinching

Generation V

Secret Power inflicts damage and has a 30% chance of causing a secondary effect. The effect is determined by environment.

Sand lowers Accuracy by one stage Mud-Slap
Cave and rock causes Flinching Rock Throw
Tall grass causes Sleep Needle Arm
Water lowers Attack by one stage Water Pulse

Trivia

  • Up until Generation V, this was the only move that can cause sleep in which the probability of sleep is less than 100% if the move is successful. In Generation V, Relic Song shares this capability.
  • As of Generation V, only one Pokémon, Audino, can learn this move through leveling up.
  • This is the only move that can have a chance of freezing higher than 10%.
  • Despite what its various animations may imply, Secret Power will always be Normal-type.
  • Secret Power is one of the two non-Ice-type move that can freeze the target. Also, both of these moves are Normal-type.
