The Secret Medicine (Japanese: ひでんのくすり Secret Medicine), called Secret Potion until Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and formatted as SecretPotion prior to Generation VI, is a Key Item introduced in Generation II.

Terminology

English

In Generation II, the name of this item was rendered in all-caps like other item names: "SECRETPOTION". This fits the 12-character limit for item names in early games. The appearance of this item was unknown at the time due to the lack of item sprites.

In Generation IV, this item name was written as "SecretPotion" due to all-caps being no longer used. The item name still included the word "Potion" even though this generation introduced the sprite for this item, revealing it to be a pouch of pills instead of a liquid substance like the Potion, Super Potion, Hyper Potion, or Max Potion.

From Generation VI until Pokémon Sword and Shield, this item was named "Secret Potion" (with a space). However, this is only found in the game data and not seen in normal gameplay, since this item is not obtainable in those games.

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, this item was renamed to "Secret Medicine".

Japanese

In Japanese, this item has been consistently named 「ひでんのくすり」 (Secret Medicine), despite the name changes in English over the generations.

This item name includes the Japanese word 「くすり」 (Medicine), which does not indicate exactly what kind of medicine is it. For comparison, this word is also used in the Japanese names of the Potion, Super Potion, Hyper Potion, Max Potion, and Full Restore, which are usually depicted as substances stored in spray bottles, as opposed to the Secret Medicine which is depicted as a pouch of pills.
