Santalune City was first mentioned by Alexa in Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!, saying that her sister's Gym is located there and not in Lumiose City. Santalune City made its proper debut appearance in A Blustery Santalune Gym Battle!, where Ash and ashfr arrived there to challenge the Gym and also reunited with Serena. Ash, however, lost the battle and began training. In Battling on Thin Ice!, Ash managed to defeat Viola in a rematch, earning himself his first Kalos Gym Badge, the Bug. Ash and his friends left Santalune City in Giving Chase at the Rhyhorn Race!.

The X & Y's main quintet arrive at Santalune City in Kangaskhan...Kangascan't. Y draws up five rules for the group, but is interrupted by Shauna before she says the fifth rule. Viola then shows up, introducing herself as the city's Gym Leader, and offers to help the quintet with their search for answers, as she was in Vaniville Town at the time of the incident. Four of the quintet accept the offer; the one who doesn't is Shauna, who claims that her friends' actions violated one of the five rules, and walks away from the group in disgust. At the city's Gym, while X agrees to a quick battle against Viola, Tierno and Trevor help Y decipher some clues from the photos Viola took at Vaniville. Y then excuses herself to look for Shauna, and returns to the Gym with Shauna moments after X wins his battle.
That night, Shauna sneaks into the room where Kanga and Li'l Kanga are sleeping, and takes out Kanga's Mega Stone from her pouch. Y and Viola notice her actions, however, and after a brief quarrel, Shauna suddenly swings a sword towards Y. Viola takes the hit for Y, and in the next moment, Celosia introduces herself to the quintet as the person who controlled Shauna all this time, before taking the Mega Stone and fleeing. X initially blames himself for the commotion but goes after Celosia, and is assisted by visiting Gym Leader Korrina, who helps X retrieve Kanga's Mega Stone. X and Korrina then have their respective Mega-Evolved Pokémon defeat Celosia's Aegislash. Later, Shauna apologizes for not listening to Y's last rule: that each of the quintet must stay together at all times, and Y responds with her own apology. Korrina passes a pair of Roller Skates to Tierno before refusing to pass down her knowledge of Mega Evolution to X, because she did not recognize X as a Successor. With that, she storms off.

* Santalune | * Santalune City shares several similarities with Viridian City; both cities contain the first Gym the player will encounter on their journey, and both cities connect to three similar routes: Route 22, leading to the badge checkpoints for the Pokémon League; a route leading to the town or city where the player can choose a Kanto starter Pokémon; and a route which leads to a forest named after the city. Incidentally, the internal layouts of both forests are very similar to one another.

In the anime
Santalune City was first mentioned by Alexa in Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!, saying that her sister's Gym is located there and not in Lumiose City. Santalune City made its proper debut appearance in A Blustery Santalune Gym Battle!, where Ash and his friends arrived there to challenge the Gym and also reunited with Serena. Ash, however, lost the battle and began training. In Battling on Thin Ice!, Ash managed to defeat Viola in a rematch, earning himself his first Kalos Gym Badge, the Bug Badge. Ash and his friends left Santalune City in Giving Chase at the Rhyhorn Race!.
In the anime, it is Tierno's hometown.
In the manga
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
The X & Y arc's main quintet arrive at Santalune City in Kangaskhan...Kangascan't.
Trivia
- Santalune City shares several similarities with Viridian City; both cities contain the first Gym the player will encounter on their journey, and both cities connect to three similar routes: Route 22, leading to the badge checkpoints for the Pokémon League; a route leading to the town or city where the player can choose a Kanto starter Pokémon; and a route which leads to a forest named after the city. Incidentally, the internal layouts of both forests are very similar to one another.
Origin
Santalune City is based on the city of Fontainebleau, home of the nearby Forest of Fontainebleau.
