Generation III
Anabel hears rumors of the player's rankings in the Battle Tower, but she is not impressed. She wants to see their talent in battle for herself. When defeated, she awards the Ability Symbol onto the Trainer Card (game).

Anabel appears in the episodes Talking a Good Game and Second Time's the Charm. She is voiced by 木村亜希子 Akiko Kimura in Japanese, Hilary Thomas in English and Gilmara Sanches in Brazilian Portuguese.
On the second match, Anabel commends the player's progress and is grateful for the chance to battle without holding anything back, to battle to her fullest.

Anabel has the empathic ability to sense the emotions of her Pokémon and give them telepathic commands, posessing powers similar to Yellow of Pokémon Special, although the other characters do not seem to regard these as psychic abilities but rather a honed sense of empathy.  Nevertheless, she is still portrayed as something of a Psychic-type specialist.
She is one of the two known Tower Tycoons, the other one being Tower Tycoon of the Battle Tower in the Sinnoh region.

She tries to teach her empathetic abilities to Ash, but he is unable to learn. Ash is surprised to learn that Anabel is a girl.
Generation VII
Spoilers
Ten years prior to the events of Sun and Moon, Anabel was found unconscious on a Poni Island beach by Looker and Nanu, who had just completed a mission for the International Police. She had lost most of her memories, only able to tell them her name, that she came from Hoenn, that she protected a tower there, and that she was a powerful Trainer. After being placed in the care of the International Police, they detected incredible amounts of Ultra Wormhole energy coming from her, implying that she was a Faller who was lost in a wormhole for a significant time. Anabel has never been informed of this, however.

Ash lost his first match to Anabel after her powerful Alakazam managed to defeat two of his Pokémon in a row, outmatching both Ash's Corphish and Tauros.  In a rematch, Ash beats them by using the same strategy as before.
Anabel eventually joined the International Police herself and quickly ascended the ranks, until she ended up as Looker's superior in the UB Task Force, a secret division of the International Police that deals with Ultra Beasts. After the player becomes Champion in Pokémon Sun and Moon, they will meet Anabel and Looker when they visit the 8 motel on Akala Island.

Anabel has a crush on Ash. When Ash leaves, Anabel thinks, "You weren't able to read my heart after all, were you, Ash." (Japanese: 最後までボクの気持ちは読めなかったね、サトシ。).
When the player meets Anabel and Looker, the pair recruit the player to the UB Task Force. Although one of the task force's duties is to either safeguard or destroy the Ultra Beasts, neither Anabel nor Looker wishes to harm them, so they need the help of the new Champion of Alola. Anabel will also battle the player to ensure that they are up to the job.

The Battle Tower is located somewhere near the Tohjo Falls.
The group proceeds to track down and catch Ultra Beasts across all four of Alola's islands. After the player catches the first, Nihilego, Anabel arranges for the player to keep the Ultra Beasts, rather than delivering them to the International Police where they would end up as research subjects. During each mission, Anabel's job is to protect nearby populated areas with the assistance of her Pokémon. As the missions continue, however, Anabel starts to show signs of fatigue. Apparently, the Ultra Beasts are being drawn to her strongly as a Faller and becoming extremely aggressive toward her, which is only exacerbated when there are multiple of them that can assail her simultaneously. In the last mission, Looker finally misdirects her away from the action so that she can recover her strength.

After all of the Ultra Beasts have been caught, the International Police HQ grants Anabel and Looker paid leave until they receive their next orders. Anabel plans to go meet with Nanu again and then spend her time sightseeing around Alola.

Anabel can later be encountered again as a Trainer in the Battle Tree, primarily using Pokémon from her Emerald roster.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Anabel makes a cameo appearance with Looker in Poni Plains. The two block the way to Poni Coast until the UB incident at Poni Grove is resolved, at which point Anabel leaves to go to the Battle Tree for training. It is mentioned that in these games, Anabel and Looker are on vacation in Alola instead of being there for a mission.

Anabel debuted in Talking a Good Game!. Ash and Pikachu met her when they were chased by an angry Beedrill. Anabel quickly calmed Beedrill down after speaking to it, much to Ash's surprise. The pair soon came across a rampaging Gyarados, and Anabel once again showed off her empathy abilities to settled it down. TRT soon ambushed the duo in an attempt to steal Pikachu, but it soon turned into a battle, which Anabel won after having her Alakazam Confusion Team Rocket's Pokémon. May, Max, and Brock later caught up with Anabel and Ash, and Anabel escorted everyone to her home to get changed out of their wet clothes. There, they learned that Anabel was actually a girl.

The group then quickly rushed off to the Battle Tower, but were shocked to learn that Anabel was also the Salon Maiden, who Ash was supposed to challenge for his next Symbol. Ash lost his first match to Anabel after her powerful Alakazam managed to defeat his Corphish and Tauros consecutively. Pikachu, however, was able to defeat Alakazam in the next round. Anabel then sent out her Metagross, and it knocked Pikachu out with a Hyper Beam.

Anabel reappeared in Second Time's the Charm!. Ash once again disturbed a group of Beedrill as he trained with his Pokemon. Tauros was stung and knocked its Trainer and Anabel into a nearby lake, but she quickly shrugged off the incident. While lunch was ruined because of Team Rocket, Anabel tried to teach Ash and May about her psychic powers, but to no avail.

Ash later had his rematch against Anabel. Corphish was able to defeat Alakazam after Ash listened to it and quickly returned it to its Poké Ball before sending Corphish back out again to overcome its confusion. Corphish lost in the next round, and after an exchange of strengths between Tauros and Metagross, the battle ended in a draw. In the final round, Anabel's Espeon was able to shadow Pikachu's moves and overwhelm his Thunderbolt with a more powerful Zap Cannon. However, Pikachu caused the facility to have a power outage and used the darkness to strike Espeon. Pikachu concluded the match with a Volt Tackle, earning Ash the Ability Symbol. As they said goodbye to one another, Anabel was revealed to have a Ability on Ash.

She reappeared during a flashback in A Pyramiding Rage!.

Character
Anabel has the empathetic ability to sense the emotions of living beings and communicate with them, ever since she was little. She also shares a particularly strong bond with her Pokémon, and is seemingly able to command them telepathically. Without the vocal commands as a cue, Ash initially struggled to compete against Anabel.

Anabel uses her Psychic Pokémon's attacks to either Confusion her opponent's Pokémon or control oncoming attacks. Her Pokémon also know some physical moves like Meteor Mash, making them equally effective in direct confrontations.

Ash chose Corphish for that match. ====History====
Emerald
Anabel is one of the seven Trainers hired by Scott to be a Frontier Brain at the Battle Frontier. Anabel is first seen watching the Battle Frontier's opening ceremony. The ceremony is interrupted by Emerald, who announces that he wishes to conquer the Battle Frontier. The press mistakenly report the incident as allowing an ordinary Trainer to take part in the Battle Frontier before it officially opens a week later. The Frontier Brains decide to use this assumption as free publicity and allow Emerald to challenge the Battle Frontier under the condition that he completes it before it officially opens.

Later, while Emerald is challenging the Battle Pyramid, Noland is attacked by an unknown assailant and several rental Pokémon are stolen. After Noland is taken to a hospital, the other Frontier Brains begin to suspect Emerald as the culprit. They head to the Battle Pyramid to confront Emerald and find him after having defeated Brandon. When they ask him about what happened, Emerald reveals that he did not attack Noland and is actually after the Mythical Pokémon Jirachi. The Frontier Brains find Emerald's explanation suspicious, but decide to follow him into Artisan Cave, where Jirachi is currently located at. Upon arriving, everyone is attacked by a horde of wild Smeargle while Emerald continues inside to find Jirachi. After the Frontier Brains get past the Smeargle, they meet up with Emerald, who has managed to find Jirachi. Emerald attempts to capture Jirachi, but is attacked by Guile Hideout, the actual culprit who attacked Noland. When Jirachi runs off, Emerald attempts to pursue it, only to be attacked by the rental Pokémon Guile had stolen. The other Frontier Brains attempt to avenge Noland by attacking Guile, but are swiftly defeated.

Anabel applauds Emerald for focusing on his mission instead of staying behind to fight and offers to fight Guile while he focuses on capturing Jirachi. Using Raikou's control over lightning, Anabel manages to trap Guile in a cage of electricity. Emerald attempts to use this chance to capture Jirachi, but Guile uses his sword to destroy the Poké Ball and breaks free from the cage. Jirachi takes this chance to flee, forcing Guile to escape as well to continue his pursuit of it. Injured from the battle, everyone decides to return to the Battle Frontier. When they meet up with Scott again, he reveals that he was aware of Guile and Emerald's true mission the entire time. Scott states that he withheld the information from the Frontier Brains to help them get stronger as they still would have lost even if they had known of Guile beforehand.

The next day, Anabel watches the tournament being hosted at the Battle Dome, where Emerald is challenging to obtain his fifth Symbol. As Emerald battles Tucker in the finals, Scott asks Anabel to talk with him somewhere else. This Scott is revealed to be a disguised Guile, who puts Anabel under mind control. After this, Guile returns to the Battle Dome, where he manages to find and capture Jirachi. Guile uses the rental Pokémon to attack innocent bystanders and heads to the Battle Tower to make his wish. Emerald, Noland, Ruby, and Sapphire all head to the Battle Tower to stop Guile, but are forced to traverse the Battle Tower's seventy floors and challenge Anabel on the final floor. Emerald manages to get to Anabel first, but is defeated by the time everyone else arrives.

On the second match, Anabel commends Brendan/May's progress, and is grateful for the chance to battle without holding anything back; to battle to her fullest.
The stress of the mind control eventually causes Anabel to pass out, forcing Guile to use her as a hostage in order to force Noland to give him the Jirachi Report, which contains the secrets of how to make Jirachi grant his wish. When Noland is unsure about what to do, Guile attacks him and takes the report by force. Now knowing Jirachi's secret, Guile has Jirachi create a gigantic Kyogre made of seawater and uses it to flood the entire Battle Frontier. Anabel is taken to safety by Latios and later awakens to help the Frontier Brains fight off Guile's rental Pokémon while Emerald and the other Pokédex holders fight Guile. Eventually, Emerald and the Pokédex holders manage to defeat Guile and destroy the gigantic Kyogre monster. The day after, an injured Anabel and the other Frontier Brains congratulate Emerald for the hard work he put into saving everyone. Anabel then awards Emerald the Ability Symbol for his skills in traversing the Battle Tower.

In the games and manga she is considered the leader of the Frontier Brains. In the anime this role is given to Brandon instead.
Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire
Anabel and the other Hoenn Frontier Brains battle and defeat the Admins of Neo Team Magma and Neo Team Aqua, who had interfered in the launch of a rocket that was made to stop the meteoroid threatening to destroy the world. Once finished, Anabel is contacted by Emerald, who asks if any of the Frontier Brains had seen Sapphire in the area. When the Brains deny seeing Sapphire, Emerald thanks them and leaves. Later, Anabel and the other Hoenn Frontier Brains are called to Sootopolis City to assist in stopping the meteoroid.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon
It was revealed that Anabel had become a member of the International Police. She, along with Looker first appear investigating Po Town, where several Ultra Beasts had appeared before breaking out and wreaking havoc on Ula'ula Island. Shortly after arriving, Anabel and Looker meet with Sun and Moon, a pair of children who had previously faced the Ultra Beasts. While she questioned Sun and Moon about the beasts, Anabel had Looker go off to investigate the rampaging beasts to find information on them as well. After receiving the information, Anabel sent out her Mismagius to battle Blacephalon, another Ultra Beast that emerged from an Ultra Wormhole.

Together with Sun, Anabel managed to stun Blacephalon long enough to throw a Poké Ball at it, but Blacephalon immediately breaks out, confirming that regular Poké Balls do not work on Ultra Beasts. Blacephalon retaliates by using Mind Blown on the group, forcing Anabel to get everyone out of the way. Anabel and the others are saved by Tapu Bulu, the guardian deity of Ula'ula Island, who used a large gust of wind to blow both Blacephalon and its attack far away. As Sun and Moon feed a Mirage Berry to Tapu Bulu to befriend it, Anabel speculates that there must be a man hiding in Alola capable of making Poké Balls that are able to capture Ultra Beasts.

Pokémon
Later, Anabel, Sun, and Moon head towards Poni Island. Anabel revealed to Sun and Moon that Xurkitree and Blacephalon are also making their way to Poni. Due to Poni not having an Island Kahuna, there would be no one capable enough of protecting the island from the two beasts. Sun, more fixated on delivering the next Mirage Berry to Tapu Fini, decided to head off and find someone who can help him search for it. After docking on Poni, Anabel and Moon arrived at Seafolk Village, which had been evacuated due to the Ultra Beasts' attacks. Worried that some injured people may still be there, Anabel requested to Moon that she help heal any hurt civilians. As they walked through Poni Wilds, Moon asked Anabel how she knew the names of the Ultra Beasts. Anabel then revealed that she knew because she is a Faller, a human who had passed through an Ultra Wormhole.
In Pokémon Emerald, Anabel has these Pokémon when you fight her for the silver Ability symbol:

Later, Anabel and Moon traveled to Vast Poni Canyon, where they witnessed Faba battling Plumeria. Anabel confronted Faba about the Aether Foundation's involvement with the Ultra Beasts' appearance in Alola. Worried that his plans could be jeopardized, Faba has his Aether Foundation Employees battle against Anabel and Moon, hoping the distraction would give him the chance to escape. Anabel used her Pokémon to keep the Employees busy while she, Moon, and Plumeria followed Faba. As he approached the Poni Altar, Faba revealed he was aware of his pursuers and proceeded to attack them while assisted by more Employees. During the battle, Moon was grabbed by Tapu Koko and taken to the Poni Altar.

After meeting with Gladion, Lillie, and Hapu, the four traveled to the Altar, where they found that Sun and Moon managed to summon Solgaleo and Lunala, the Legendary Pokémon of the Alola region. After explaining what Solgaleo and Lunala are and their connection with Cosmog, Anabel received a call from Looker, who reported that a large number of Ultra Beasts emerged from Po Town and have made their way to Poni Island. Anabel teamed up with Moon, Gladion, and Hapu to fend off the attacking beasts. Later, a larger than usual wormhole opened at the Altar, which Anabel noted was caused by the Necrozma. A hand emerged from the wormhole and grabbed Solgaleo, taking control of its body. The possessed Solgaleo captured Sun with its tail and jumped into the wormhole while Moon and Nebby followed after it.

Pokémon
Trivia
This listing is for Anabel's Pokémon in the Pokémon Special manga.
* Despite being female, in Japanese, Anabel uses the typically masculine personal pronoun ボク boku.
* Raikou
* Anabel is the only Frontier Brain whose title (in some languages) does not incorporate the second word of their facility's name. However, the Battle Salon is an actual room in a Battle Tower where Trainers can meet each other and team up to participate in Multi Battles.
** In the anime episode wherein she made her debut, Anabel was mentioned to be the head of the Battle Tower's Battle Salon.
* In the anime, her Espeon knows Zap Cannon, a move it could not learn in the games at the time of her anime appearance during Generation III.
* Anabel's ability to sense the feelings of Pokémon is similar to that of N in the anime and Sheena from the twelfth movie.
* Anabel's Battle Tree battle music in Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is a completely unaltered version of the Frontier Brain battle theme from Emerald.
* Anabel is 165 cm (5'5") tall in Generation VII.

Trivia
* Straight after Pokémon Emerald was released, there was some debate regarding Anabel's gender. However, after revealing of her Sugimori Artwork and anime and manga appearances, there is no doubt about it. She's female. However, in Japanese version she has strange first-person preference. She uses ボク boku, which is typical to males.
*Based on the way Anabel looks, it is possible that her design is based off of the design of the female Psychic. This theory is further supported by the fact that Anabel uses all Psychic type Pokémon in the anime.

Salon Maiden Anabel (Japanese: タワータイクーン リラ Tower Tycoon Lila) is the Frontier Brain in charge of running the Battle Frontier's Battle Tower.

In the games

Generation III

Anabel hears rumors of the player's rankings in the Battle Tower, but she is not impressed. She wants to see their talent in battle for herself. When defeated, she awards the Ability Symbol onto the Frontier Pass.

On the second match, Anabel commends the player's progress and is grateful for the chance to battle without holding anything back, to battle to her fullest.

She is one of the two known Tower Tycoons, the other one being Palmer of the Battle Tower in the Sinnoh region.

201

Ten years prior to the events of Sun and Moon, Anabel was found unconscious on a Poni Island beach by Looker and Nanu, who had just completed a mission for the International Police. She had lost most of her memories, only able to tell them her name, that she came from Hoenn, that she protected a tower there, and that she was a powerful Trainer. After being placed in the care of the International Police, they detected incredible amounts of Ultra Wormhole energy coming from her, implying that she was a Faller who was lost in a wormhole for a significant time. Anabel has never been informed of this, however.

Anabel eventually joined the International Police herself and quickly ascended the ranks, until she ended up as Looker's superior in the UB Task Force, a secret division of the International Police that deals with Ultra Beasts. After the player becomes Champion in Pokémon Sun and Moon, they will meet Anabel and Looker when they visit the Route 8 motel on Akala Island.

Roadside Motel - Route 8
"It is an honor to meet you, of course, the first Champion of Alola. Please forgive our rude summons. My name is Anabel. I am the head of a secret division within the International Police. We are the UB Task Force."
UB?: "The UBs are the beasts... otherwise known as Ultra Beasts. They are unidentified life-forms that reside in a different world from the one we live in. That Nihilego creature you encountered was one such beast."
Symbiont?: "Yes, UB-01...Symbiont. I suppose you knew it as Nihilego. The International Police refers to all of the UBs by code names, like Symbiont there. I believe you might recognize it as the Pokémon that the woman Lusamine fused with?"
Regardless of choice: "Just as we had thought..."
"Listen. Everything that we are about to share with you is highly classified information. We must ask that you keep all that you learn here to yourself. The incident that Ms. Lusamine caused... Symbiont wasn't the only UB to appear from the Ultra Wormhole that was temporarily opened at the time."
"And so we have been tasked with three duties. The first is to investigate the ecology of these unidentified UBs. The second is to look out for UBs and protect the people from any harm. And the third is to either protect the UBs... or destroy them..."
"But neither myself nor Looker would like to see that happen. Even if they are UBs, they are living creatures. We would like to protect them and save them."
"And so we finally arrive at the point. Let us dispense with any pretense... We wish for you, the Champion of Alola, to lend us your assistance. <Player>... we want you to join our team. Please give your aid to the UB Task Force."

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Poni Plains
"So this is Poni Island... I can tell that only the best Trainers in all of Alola gather here."
"Nature and Pokémon and people, surviving together in their own harsh way..."
"You must be the first Champion of Alola. My name is Anabel, and I am part of the International Police. It is a pleasure to meet you."
"It seems as if you're in the middle of a mission. You should wrap that up first. They are tough opponents, but you and your Pokémon should be able to handle them."
 • After dealing with the Ultra Beasts at Poni Grove
"I plan to train at the Battle Tree, so as to be able to complete any assignment as a member of the International Police. Until we meet again..."

Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon

Battle Tree
 • Before battle
"Being here somehow makes me nostalgic... I remember those days..."
 • Upon being defeated
"Your talent...it's real."
 • If the player is defeated

"Well, I have let up on my mission, so I'll join up with you."

Anabel in the anime

Anabel debuted in Talking a Good Game!. Ash and Pikachu met her when they were chased by an angry Beedrill. Anabel quickly calmed Beedrill down after speaking to it, much to Ash's surprise. The pair soon came across a rampaging Gyarados, and Anabel once again showed off her empathy abilities to settled it down. Team Rocket soon ambushed the duo in an attempt to steal Pikachu, but it soon turned into a battle, which Anabel won after having her Alakazam confuse Team Rocket's Pokémon.

As they said goodbye to one another, Anabel was revealed to have a Template:S on Ash.

Anabel uses her Psychic Pokémon's attacks to either confuse her opponent's Pokémon or control oncoming attacks. Her Pokémon also know some physical moves like Meteor Mash, making them equally effective in direct confrontations.

Pokémon

This listing is of Anabel's known Pokémon in the anime:

Anabel's Alakazam
Alakazam
Anabel first called on Alakazam in Talking a Good Game! to help her and Ash when they were attacked by Team Rocket. Alakazam was able to defeat them with its powerful Psychic attack. Ash then realized that Anabel was a Frontier Brain and that he would have to battle Alakazam. Ash chose Corphish for that match. In the end, Alakazam easily defeated Corphish and Tauros before finally being defeated by his Pikachu, but it was able to weaken it beforehand.

In Second Time's the Charm!, Ash had a rematch with Anabel. Again, she chose Alakazam as her first Pokémon. It went head to head against Corphish once again, but this time, Alakazam was defeated by Corphish's Bubble Beam after Ash found a way to overcome Corphish's confusion.

Alakazam's known moves are Psychic, Psybeam, Focus Punch, and Recover.

This cost some critical hits for Espeon, and Pikachu was finally able to defeat the Sun Pokémon with a Volt Tackle, winning the match for Ash and earning him the Ability Symbol.

History

Emerald arc

Anabel in the fourteenth chapter

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc

Later, Anabel managed to defeat and capture Faba. Later, a larger than usual wormhole opened at the Altar, which Anabel noted was caused by the Blinding One. A hand emerged from the wormhole and grabbed Solgaleo, taking control of its body. The possessed Solgaleo captured Sun with its tail and jumped into the wormhole while Moon and Nebby followed after it.

 • In the anime, her Espeon knows Zap Cannon, a move it could not learn in the games at the time of her anime appearance during Generation III.
 • Anabel's ability to sense the feelings of Pokémon is similar to that of N in the anime and Sheena from the twelfth movie.
 • Anabel's Battle Tree battle music in Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is a completely unaltered version of the Frontier Brain battle theme from Emerald.
 • Anabel is 165 cm (5'5") tall in Generation VII.
