Partner Promises! (Japanese: サトシとピカチュウ、二人の約束 Satoshi and Pikachu, the Promise between Them) is the 20th episode of the Sun & Moon series, and the 959th episode of the Pokémon anime. It first aired in Japan on April 6, 2017, as a one-hour special alongside SM021, and in the United States on July 1, 2017, as part of a three-hour special.
Blurb
Ash reluctantly tags along with Lana, Lillie, and Mallow at the mall. One store’s owner points him toward Treasure Island, a gorgeous place full of wild Pokémon, and offers to lend him her kayak. Soon, he and Pikachu are on their way!
After a great day of exploring, swimming, and meeting new Pokémon, they discover a Wimpod stuck in some rocks. Ash tries to scale the cliff to rescue it, but just gets all scraped up until Pikachu recruits an Alolan Exeggutor to give him a lift. Wimpod is freed—and Tapu Lele, Akala’s mysterious Island Guardian (who’s been secretly watching them), shows its approval by healing Ash’s scratches!

Ash and his classmates are at the largest shopping mall on Melemele Island doing some shopping. As Ash examines what appears to be candy, Rotom explains that it is a Pokémon food called Poké Beans. Ash thinks it sounds good and wonders which one Pikachu would like as Mallow says that Steenee likes the floral patterned Poké Beans. Rotom is surprised to find that they have floral patterned Poké Beans as Ash goes for a Pikachu colored Poké Bean and buys it as Lillie says that she wants to look at scarves and bandannas for Snowy which Lana and Mallow agree to help as Ash, Sophocles and Kiawe look on, Sophocles notes that they are having a good time as Rotom tells them that a large number of women enjoy shopping which leads Sophocles to say they should ask them the same thing. Later the girls emerge from the shop as Sophocles guesses this wraps things up but Mallow says they're not done yet as they are going to Alola Sunrise which excites Lillie as Mallow explains to Ash what Alola Sunrise is an accessory shop for Melemele girls, including items made up off Heart Scales found washed up on the beach along with Corsola branches. Kiawe makes an excuse to leave and takes off on his Charizard as Sophocles, realizing what is going to happen says he forgot to wash the flowers and runs off which leaves Ash confused as that is his dads job as Rotom suddenly remembers that Alolan Detective Laki is starting soon, Ash mentions that it will be recorded but Rotom leaves saying a true Laki fan will watch and then record it. Realizing what is about to happen, Ash starts to make up an excuse to leave but is stopped from leaving by Mallow who says he'll have a good time to which Ash agrees. At Alola Sunrise, Ash and Pikachu watch as the girls along with their Pokémon try out the accessories on offer before heading outside and spots an island in the distance where a Ride Lapras is taking a lady across the water. The manager of Alola Sunrise comes over to Ash and Pikachu who says it is beautiful to look at whilst at work and asks Ash if he came with his friends and that they must be close. She points over to the island and tells Ash that it is Treasure Island and goes there sometimes to get materials for accessories which she does for fun and gets to see a lot of Wild Pokémon which excites Ash and he wants to go over as the manager offers Ash the use of her kayak as her little gift. Ash takes her up on her offer Lillie, Lana and Mallow come over haven gotten their things. Ash calls this good timing and checks with the manager that she'll let him use the kayak now and tells his friends that they are off to explore Treasure Island. Ash and Pikachu set off in the kayak over to Treasure Island, Ash paddles and enjoys the sea, sky and all the Pokémon on the sea which he finds great and relaxing and makes him feel like they're the only ones out on the planet. He continues paddling and they soon arrive on the island.
As they run along the beach, Ash and Pikachu spot a group of Crabrawler where two of them are having a boxing match. As they watch, one of the Crabrawler knocks the other out which Ash and Pikachu find awesome and they go over to the Crabrawler and calls it an amazing punch and asks to join them but the Crabrawler after thinking about it, the Crabrawler all leave, taking the knocked out Crabrawler with them. Just them a Cutiefly flies past them and as Ash and Pikachu watch, Ash wonders what Pokémon Cutiefly is and makes him wish that Rotom was with him to tell him as Cutiefly lands on Pikachu's nose, causing it to get ready to sneeze. Back at Professor Kukui's house, the mention of his name makes Rotom sneeze which surprises Professor Kukui as Rotom guesses that someone is talking about him. Ash laughs on seeing Pikachu who has sneezed as it looks like Cutiefly thinks it was a flower. Cutiefly flies off and Ash and Pikachu follow and arrive at a meadow where a collection of Pokémon including Cutiefly, Ribombee, Butterfree and Comfey are. One of the Comfey wraps its lei around Ash's neck which Ash finds cool, finding it to be just like paradise as a group of Alolan Exeggutor walk by which Ash and Pikachu decide to follow and walk behind, mimicking their walk and speech but are soon noticed as the Exeggutor turn their bodies to face them as nervously repeats Exeggutor but the Exeggutor soon walk off. Soon the Exeggutor stop by a spring for a drink and Ash and Pikachu join them and watch as the Exeggutor have fun before diving in and joining in the fun including climbing up the Exeggutor and being playfully thrown off into the water. Later the Exeggutor walk off and Ash thanks them for the fun and they sit on a log as Ash's clothes dry in the sun and Pikachu yawns from feeling tired as Ash brings out the Poké Beans that he bought earlier and gives Pikachu a Poké Bean which Pikachu enjoys before helping himself to one. Ash notes that it has been quite a while since it was the two of them and they've met so many people since he first met him at Professor Oak's Laboratory and they've done a lot of travelling and battling together before coming to Alola where they've met everyone, so many people and Pokémon that he loves Alola since it great since everyone is warm, people and Pokémon living together, surrounded by nature and tells Pikachu that he wants to become stronger with him because they are a team and there is a lot of amazing stuff in Alola and it will all help him before a Pokémon Master which Pikachu understands as Ash says he is counting on Pikachu as Pikachu hugs Ash affectionately and they soon fall asleep but are soon awoken by a group of Wimpod who have surrounded them. As Ash wonders what they are, one of them bites Ash on the foot as two of them invade his backpack and take the Poké Beans but Ash manages to grab his backpack which sends the Wimpod scurrying away but they chase after them to get the bag of Poké Beans back but Pikachu manages to get it as the Wimpod swim into the water. Ash receives the bag and thanks Pikachu before watching the Wimpod leave.
On the beach, a group of Wingull fly off as Ash watches as the sun starts to set and decides they had better hurry back home but as they set off, they hear a sound and follow it as Ash wonders where it is coming from as Pikachu senses where it is coming from and finds the source as Ash comes to investigate, he finds a Wimpod stuck in the rock. Pikachu tries to squeeze through the hole but is too big as Ash wonders how it got in there and says they have to get it out and realizes he would have to climb a big cliff face and goes to climb it but falls down but doesn't give up and keeps trying before falling down again. Ash promises Wimpod that he'll get it out and has another go at climbing before Pikachu has an idea and runs off which distracts Ash's attention, causing him to lose his grip on the rocks and fall back down. Ash recovers from the fall, wishing that Rowlet was here as back home, Rowlet is sleeping only to be startled awake as Ash guesses that Rowlet is probably asleep as an Exeggutor arrive with Pikachu clinging to its neck causing Ash to wonder what is going on before realizing that he can climb Exeggutor's head and explains to Exeggutor that there is a Pokémon stuck and asks for a lift which Exeggutor provides. Once at the top of the cliff, Ash thanks Exeggutor for the lift before climbing down a hole where the Wimpod is stuck which Wimpod finds scary but Ash assures it that it has to stay calm before jumping down which ends up frightening Wimpod even more. As Wimpod tries to run through a gap before getting stuck, Ash apologizes before realizing that this is how Wimpod got in but there is a big rock blocking the way which is preventing Wimpod from leaving and tells Wimpod that it is lucky it didn't get squished. Ash tries to move the rock but finds it heavy and tells Wimpod not to worry before having Pikachu help him out by using Iron Tail on the rock which Pikachu does, smashing the rock causing the Exeggutor to be startled. Ash tells the Wimpod that now it can get out and it leads the cave followed by Ash and Pikachu and as the Exeggutor leaves, Wimpod stares at the ocean but Wimpod seems reluctant to leave as Ash notices more Wimpod waiting for it in the ocean, Wimpod soon leaves to join its friends as Ash and Pikachu tell it to take care but Wimpod comes back to them to thank them before rejoining its friends. Watching the Wimpod leave, they notice something in the sky and spot Tapu Lele which flies over to them, scattering its glowing scales. Ash watches amazed as it heal the scratches that he got whilst rescuing Wimpod. Surprised, he thanks Tapu Lele before heading home.
Back home, Professor Kukui tells Ash that the Pokémon he saw was most likely Tapu Lele and Ash asks if this means that Tapu Lele is Tapu Koko's friend which Professor Kukui confirms and says that meeting it is extremely rare and mentions that the Pokémon he helped was most likely a Wimpod. Ash asks Rotom to provide him with data on Tapu Lele which helps to explain why his scratches are gone as Rotom also provides data on Wimpod and Professor Kukui mentions that Tapu Lele is the guardian of Akala Island which makes Ash want to see it again which Professor Kukui says could happen if his luck holds out but Ash is confident they will see it again without luck and promises Rotom, Rowlet and Rockruff that they can see it as well as they dig in to their meal.
