Ash really wants to have a rematch against Tapu Koko, but he’s not sure about his strategy. Sophocles, who studies Electric-type Pokémon, offers to help! After some research and training at Sophocles Lab, Ash and Pikachu are ready for battle, and so is Tapu Koko.

The speed training pays off as Pikachu zooms around the battlefield and even lands a couple of impressive hits! But the Island Guardian is still too powerful...for now. One day at the Pokémon School, Ash and Rockruff are in the middle of a battle against a boy called Hiroki and his Mudbray. Ash tells Rockruff to use Rock Throw but Hiroki has Mudbray use Double Kick which blocks the move. Watching the battle, Mallow comments that that was so close as Kiawe a Rock-type like Rockruff is at a disadvantage against a Ground-type like Mudbray but Sophocles doesn't see Ash at being at a disadvantage as Lillie sees that they are having fun out there. After checking that Rockruff can continue, Ash powers up to use a Z-Move and has Rockruff perform Breakneck Blitz. Rotom shots footage of Rockruff performing the move as Rockruff hits Mudbray with Breakneck Blitz, knocking it out. his classmates are delighted that Ash won as Rotom tells Ash that it recorded the battle and Rockruff's Z Move is on type and Ash thanks him before telling Rockruff that it was great. Ash and Hiroki shake hands and Hiroki says that it was a nice battle and agrees to another battle sometime before leaving as his classmates join him with Ash hoping to get a lot stronger. Professor Kukui joins them noting that when Pokémon and trainer grow stronger, their Z moves do as well. Ash is surprised as Professor Kukui says that when a Pokémon uses a Z Move, it gets power from its trainer as Kiawe says that is why it is important for Ash to get stronger. Ash tells them to just watch him and then he'll battle Tapu Koko as Professor Kukui says that will be something to see. Lillie is a bit jealous as Ash is ready to battle the strongest of opponents but Lana knows that it is strong as it is an island guardian but because Tapu Koko gave him the Z-Ring, Ash wants it to know how much stronger he can get. Mallow asks Ash what sort of training he will do which leaves Ash wondering what to do as Lillie points out that Tapu Koko is an Electric and Fairy-type so he should come up with a strategy based on that. Sophocles offers his assistance and invites him to come by his house later to see his data which can help with his training.

After school, Sophocles and Ash arrive at his house with Togedemaru and Pikachu as Ash notes that it is close to school. They go inside and Sophocles introduces his mother to Ash who says it is nice to meet her and introduces her to Pikachu and Rotom. Sophocles' mother goes to make them something to eat as Ash has a look around. He sits a table as he smells food in the kitchen as Sophocles' mother brings him some homemade Malasada donuts. Ash goes to eat one but it is pipping hot as Sophocles says they are hot and fresh and not to burn his mouth as Sophocles helps himself to three. Ash takes another bite and calls it the best before giving some of it to Pikachu as Rotom registers the internal temperature as Sophocles mentions that restaurants make the same but his mom's are the best in the world. His mother tells them to eat as much as they want as there are plenty more. Later, Ash is feeling full having enjoyed them as Rotom asks Ash if he remembers what they came here for and Ash suddenly remembers they came to get data for battling Tapu Koko. Sophocles takes Ash outside where the meet his dad watering the flowers and Sophocles introduces them and his dad has heard a lot about Ash as Rotom notes that Sophocles and his dad look alike. After commenting on Sophocles' mom's cooking, Sophocles takes him to his own personal laboratory which surprises Ash as Sophocles mentions that his dad built it just for him. They go inside and Ash is amazed and Rotom is fascinated but Sophocles tells them not to touch anything without asking first as some of it is dangerous. Ash has put on a helmet resembling Togedemaru and presses a device which ends up giving him an electric shock which knocks the helmet of him and ends up on Rotom who also receives a shock before landing on Pikachu who uses Thunderbolt as Rotom has a go at Ash as does Sophocles for not asking first.

Sophocles goes to his computer and tells Ash that when he had his battle against Tapu Koko, he had analyzed its electric field and Tapu Koko utilized its ability Electric Surge to generate it and Rotom says this allows Electric-types to gain more power when performed in an electric field which Sophocles says will benefit an electric type like Pikachu but he will require a different strategy when battling with Rowlet and Rockruff and brings up the conduction rate of its electric field and factors in the evasiveness of Rockruff's speed. As Rotom and Sophocles talk, Ash has trouble understanding any of it and eventually stops their conversation. Pikachu goes over to a wheel where Togedemaru pushes him onto it and starts walking which Ash notes looks like fun as Sophocles gets an idea and tells him it could be just the training that he needs. Outside, Sophocles shows Ash a similar wheel but much bigger in size which Sophocles says will allow them all to run around inside and makes training fun as Ash calls Rowlet and Rockruff out to take part. Ash puts Rowlet on the wheel where Pikachu, Rockruff and Togedemaru are waiting but before they start, Sophocles puts a device on their heads and explains he will use this to collect data from all of them with Rotom says is vital. They start walking on the wheel and soon increase their speed but Rowlet has trouble keeping up as Sophocles and Rotom check the data, Rotom sees that it is going up fast as Rockruff ends up pushing itself and Rowlet off the wheel with Togedemaru joining them leaving Ash and Pikachu on the wheel, they start to go even faster which starts to overload Sophocles' computer, sending Sophocles's gauges haywire as Rotom sees that his gauges are right and it ends up causing an explosion that Tapu Koko sees. Rotom, Rowlet and Togedemaru are left shocked as the explosion had destroyed the wheel as Ash asks what happened. Checking his computer, Sophocles is surprised to see a high number registered and asks Ash what happened which Ash has no idea but has a breakthrough as Sophocles's parents come out to find out what happened as Sophocles tells them he has had his first breakthrough.

The next day at school, Kiawe asks Ash how it went to which Sophocles says it was a major breakthrough which doesn't surprise Mallow or Lana and Ash says that he has a great plan for battling Tapu Koko and Sophocles got plenty of data from it as Kiawe guesses he is looking forward to his battle as Pikachu starts to sense something outside and heads outside the classroom followed by Togedemaru followed by the other Pokémon and their trainers to see what is going on. In the schoolyard, Pikachu is surprised to see Tapu Koko flying down as Sophocles guesses that Tapu Koko used electricity to communicate with Pikachu. Lillie wonders why Tapu Koko would do that but Kiawe says it was to challenge Ash to a battle. Ash is pleased to see Tapu Koko and says he wants a battle as Rockruff and Rowlet step forward to challenge it but Tapu Koko charges at them and sends them flying before standing in front of Pikachu which leads Ash to guess Tapu Koko only wants to fight Pikachu. A group of students gather and are surprised to see Tapu Koko there as Professor Kukui joins them. Lillie doesn't understand why Tapu Koko would turn up wherever Ash is but Professor Kukui says the answer may be contained in the battle they are about to watch. The battle gets started as Lana notes that they are so focused as Rotom starts to record the battle. Tapu Koko activates Electric Surge as Ash orders Pikachu to use Quick Attack which Tapu Koko dodges as Pikachu bounces of a tree to use Iron Tail which hits Tapu Koko but Pikachu is sent flying but as Tapu Koko flies to Pikachu, Ash has Pikachu try another Iron Tail which hits Tapu Koko in the face but recovers as Professor Kukui notes that they are much faster than they were as Lana wonders if they could win. Ash tells Pikachu that it was great and to circle around until he finds an opening which Pikachu does as Tapu Koko watches Pikachu closely. Sophocles thinks that Ash could win but Professor Kukui tells him to slow down as it is easier said than done. As Pikachu goes to attack, Tapu Koko uses Nature's Madness which strikes Pikachu causing damage but Pikachu is able to get up. Tapu Koko continues the match using Discharge which hits Pikachu and heads towards the crowd but Togedemaru saves them using its ability Lightning Rod which Togedemaru absorbs as Professor Kukui notes it was a close call.

Professor Kukui notes that Electric Field causes Discharge to become a lot stronger as Sophocles thinks it might be too hard for Pikachu. Ash desperately asks Pikachu to get up which Pikachu manages to do as Ash's Electrium Z begins to glow which leaves Lillie wondering what is going on as Kiawe says Tapu Koko can't be doing that but Professor Kukui notes that it is waiting for them to go to full power which amazes Lillie as Ash praises Pikachu for getting up before noting his Electrium Z glowing and realizing what it means, apologizes to Tapu Koko for taking so long and they power up as the others look on and use Gigavolt Havoc but as the attack almost hits Tapu Koko, it closes its hand and it hit by Gigavolt Havoc which sends it flying into a tree but Tapu Koko recovers and goes to hit Pikachu as Ash orders another Iron Tail which strikes Tapu Koko but is sent flying, crashing through a fence and over a cliff, much to everyone's horror. Ash jumps off the cliff after Pikachu which horrifies Kiawe and Professor Kukui as Ash catches Pikachu in mid-fall as Tapu Koko swoops down. Running to the edge of the cliff, Professor Kukui and Ash's classmates watch as Tapu Koko flies up having saved Ash and Pikachu from the fall, much to everyone's relief as Rotom takes a picture of it. Ash thanks Tapu Koko for saving them and puts them safely on the ground as Professor Kukui checks that Ash is alright as Tapu Koko flies off as Ash vows to get stronger and battle Tapu Koko again.
