Roxanne (Japanese: ツツジ Tsutsuji) is the Gym Leader of Rustboro City's Gym, known officially as the Rustboro Gym. Trainers who defeat her receive the Stone. She is a scholar who specializes in Rock Pokémon.
Roxanne's title is "The Rock-Loving Honor Student." Her strategy is Rock-type power attacks. She believes Rock-type Pokémon to be rock solid.

Roxanne became a Gym Leader so that she could apply what she learned at the Pokémon Trainer's School in battle. She wants to face many new opponents to see them demonstrate how they battle and with which Pokémon.

Roxanne appears in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire as the Gym Leader of the Rustboro Gym. She believes Rock Pokémon to be rock-solid, and her strategy is to use Rock-type power attacks. She became a Gym Leader so that she could apply what she learned at the Pokémon Trainers' School in battle. She wants to face many new opponents to see them demonstrate how they battle and with which Pokémon. In addition to the Stone, Roxanne gives out 39.

Her desire is to learn all about Pokémon through battling.
After Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's Delta Episode, she can also be seen at the Fossil Maniac's cave, begging for a Fossil. She even considers offering him a free Stone Badge in exchange, but quickly restrains herself, despite her desperate desire.

In addition to the Stone Badge, Roxanne gives out 39, in Ruby.
According to the TV show Trouble Talk, she is an expert in Fossils and has been written up in a number of magazines for it. She is also a friend of Steven Stone and joins stone hunting groups with him, according to a stone seller on 114.

In , Roxanne appears alongside the other Gym Leaders of Hoenn as an opponent in the Hoenn Leaders Tournament at the Pokémon World Tournament. She also participates alongside the Gym Leaders of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh and Unova in the World Leaders Tournament, and other Rock-type specialists in the Rock Type Expert Tournament.

Main series
Roxanne is a top graduate of the Rustboro City Pokémon Trainers' School, and now teaches the academy's beginner class. She was granted the position of Rustboro Gym Leader because of her excellent record at the academy, and she allows some of the school's students to undertake internships at the Rustboro Gym.

* After being defeated
Roxanne debuted in Gonna Rule The School!. Ash and ashfr met her when Max found a lost Poliwag that was soon revealed to belong to the Pokémon Trainers' School. Roxanne then invited the group to the school before Ash's Gym battle. Roxanne admitted that she was going to be busy teaching her students until tomorrow, and promised she would battle Ash the day after.
:"The Stone Badge heightens the attack power of your Pokémon. It also enables them to use the HM move Cut outside of battle. Please take this with you, too."

:"That Technical Machine, TM39, contains Rock Tomb. It not only inflicts damage by dropping rocks, it also lowers speed. If you use a TM, it instantly teaches the move to a Pokémon. Remember, a TM can be used only once, so think before you use it."
Ash, Max, and Brock joined Roxanne's students the next day after being invited by the principal, while May studied with the Contest class. TRT arrived and stole the school's Pokémon, but under Roxanne's watchful eye, her students and Max were able to recover them. She then called on her Geodude and sent Team Rocket blasting off.

:"Since you are so strong, you should challenge other Gym Leaders. By battling many Trainers, you should learn many things."
In The Winner by a Nosepass, Ash battled Roxanne at the Rustboro Gym while being filmed by some of Roxanne's students. Treecko went up against Roxanne's Geodude, but was defeated by its powerful Mega Punch attacks. Pikachu was able to defeat both of her Pokémon through a combination of pure electrical power and its newly learned Iron Tail technique, which took Roxanne by surprise. Afterwards, Roxanne gave Ash the Stone in recognition of his victory.

Rematch
Roxanne is familiar with Professor Oak, as he gives live remote lectures to the students at the school. She also knew about Brock and the Pewter Gym before she met him, as the Pewter Gym shares her Rock specialty.
* Before battle
:"I'm so glad to see you again. I'm Roxanne, the Gym Leader here. I'm sure we've both experienced many battles since we last met. I would like to see how much better we've become. Let us battle!"

* When defeated
She reappeared in a flashback in Whiscash and Ash.
:"Grr... Again, I have lost..."

* After being defeated
Character
:"I still have much to learn when it comes to battling Pokémon. That awareness makes me love battling all that much more!"
Roxanne enjoys fostering young Trainers. She offers them real-life experiences, such as filming her Gym battles and taking her students on excursions. Roxanne values collaboration, confidence, and consideration in her students and earmarks those qualities as critical to a Trainer's success with handling their Pokémon.

PokéNav/PokéNav
She relies on her Pokémon's defenses to overcome a challenger's offensive techniques. Roxanne is perceptive and quickly understands a Trainer's battle strategy when she first sees it. Both of her Pokémon have a wide variety of moves, allowing Roxanne to launch a range of combinations that take advantage of her opponent's weaknesses.

Roxanne first appeared in Gonna Rule The School. Ash Ketchum and his friends met her when Max found a lost Poliwag from Roxanne's school. Roxanne teaches classes on Pokémon to the citizens of Rustboro. She is in charge of teaching very young children about Pokémon in the Pokémon Trainer's School.

When Ash and company first arrived in Rustboro, Roxanne was not able to answer Ash's challenge because she was still busy with teaching. However, she and the headmaster of the school invited the gang to spend a day in the school.

In A Winner By a Nosepass, Ash battled Roxanne at the Gym while being filmed by some of Roxanne's students. Ash's Pikachu was able to defeat both of her Pokémon through a combination of pure electrical power and its newly learned Iron Tail technique, which took Roxanne by surprise.

Roxanne makes her opponents take a written test as part of the Gym challenge. Due Saphire harshness, and lack of experience in classroom Roxanne acted very arrogant toward her, but when she discovered Sapphire got the highest marks in the history of the test due to her tutoring from her father, Professor Birch, she battled her out of annoyance.
Pokémon Adventures
History
Ruby & Sapphire
Roxanne is a graduate of the Rustboro Trainers' School and passed with high grades. When Sapphire arrives at the Gym to obtain her first Badge, she is shocked to find that other challengers are just studying. Roxanne explains that due to having so many challengers, she makes people take tests as a requirement to be able to face her. Sapphire reluctantly takes the test as well, but initially struggles due to her poor literacy skills. With help from advisors on how to read certain words, Sapphire manages to pass her test with flying colors, much to Roxanne's surprise.

Sapphire battled with her Aron only to have Roxanne's Nosepass block her attacks with Harden. Sapphire was unable to withdraw her Aron from the battle thanks to Nosepass' Magnet Pull. Sapphire, however, realized that Nosepass must always face north and had her Aron attack from behind.
The two then have their Gym battle against each other. Roxanne faces Sapphire's Rono with her Nosepass. Sapphire finds that Nosepass is too strong to beat, but is unable to switch due to Nosepass's Magnet Pull Ability. By exploiting Nosepass's inability to face in directions other than north or else it will lose its balance, Sapphire strikes Nosepass from behind and defeats it, earning herself a Stone Badge. Roxanne congratulates Sapphire for her efforts and explains that the Badges can enable Sapphire to take place in the Pokémon League.

In the Hoenn conflict, she sided with Team Aqua. She had worked with Professor Cozmo, who unknowingly assisted the evil team, and reasoned that the Professor wouldn't support an evil group. She changed her mind after Kyogre and Groudon started their rampage.
Later, Roxanne and the other Gym Leaders are called on by Flannery to meet in Fortree City. They have a discussion on Team Magma and Team Aqua about whether or not one of the teams is evil and the other is good. Roxanne exclaims that her former colleague Professor Cozmo is being funded by Team Aqua. She claims that since Professor Cozmo would never work with villains, Team Aqua is on the side of good and Team Magma is on the side of evil.

Roxanne attempted to stop Groudon in Lilycove City by having her Nosepass use Block. It worked, but during a battle with Courtney, the FireHead threatened to kill nearby civilians and so Roxanne yielded, allowing Courtney's Ninetales to knock out Nosepass.

Roxanne and Brawly are sent to the drought-plagued areas to face Groudon in battle. Despite their best efforts, Groudon proves to be too powerful for any of their attacks to damage it. Roxanne manages to prevent Groudon from moving with her Nosepass's Block and continuously attacks it to prevent Groudon from advancing any further. Wallace also arrives to assist Roxanne and Brawly in attacking Groudon, but all three are interrupted by the Three Fires of Team Magma, Blaise, Tabitha, and Courtney. The three grab Roxanne, Brawly, and Wallace and takes them to Lilycove City to prevent the Gym Leaders from stopping Groudon any further. Roxanne is dragged to Cove Lily Motel, where Courtney faces her in battle. Roxanne nearly manages to win, but Courtney holds several people hostage and threatens their lives. With no choice but to give up, Roxanne reluctantly allows Courtney to knock her Nosepass out, freeing Groudon from the effects of Block.

After both Team Magma and Team Aqua are defeated, with Groudon and Kyogre returning to their deep slumber, Roxanne celebrated the victory with her allies and thanked Sapphire and Ruby for their assistance in the battle.

Roxanne, along with various people from around Hoenn, is called to Sootopolis City to assist in stopping Grand Meteor Delta, a giant meteoroid threatening to destroy the planet. When the plan to attack Grand Meteor Delta starts, Roxanne and the others have their Pokémon attack the meteoroid at the same time. This, combined with the might of Mega Super-ancient Pokémon (Adventures), successfully shatters Grand Meteor Delta into pieces.

Roxanne (Astral Radiance 150)
Roxanne was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Sword & Shield Series (the Japanese Sword & Shield Era). It was first released in the Battle Region subset before debuting in English in the Astral Radiance expansion, the regular print with artwork by Megumi Mizutani, and the Full Art card and Rainbow Rare prints by Sanosuke Sakuma. This card can only be played if ones opponent has 3 or fewer Prize cards remaining. When played, both players shuffle their hand into their deck. Then, the person who played the card draws 6 cards, and the other player draws 2 cards.

One of XY Promo's illustrations features Roxanne and her Gym Badge.

Trivia
Trivia
* Roxanne was the first Gym Leader that is encountered first in the region to give out a TM containing a move of her signature type; both Falkner and Brock gave out TMs containing moves not of their specialty type in their respective first appearances, changing to their specialty in their games' remakes.
* Roxanne has used all five Fossil Pokémon families introduced in Generations I and III at least once.
* Roxanne is currently the only first Gym Leader in a region who is female.
* In Emerald, Roxanne's team changes from an all-female party in her Gym battle to an all-male party in her rematches.
* Roxanne is also the only Rock specialist Gym Leader who is female.
** However, it is said that Jasmine used to be a Rock Trainer before she became a Steel specialist.
* Roxanne is also the first Rock Gym Leader that doesn't have an Onix when she is challenged the first time, as Onix is not native to Hoenn.
** By the final rematch in Emerald, the Onix she obtains earlier has evolved into Steelix, becoming the only Pokémon in her team that is not of her specialty type.
* Roxanne uses all five Pokémon families from the Kanto and Hoenn regions which can be revived from Fossils.
* Roxanne's Nosepass is the only lead Pokémon of a Gym Leader that has an evolution introduced after their debut generation and to use the evolution in a future generation as their lead Pokémon. Onix can evolve, but Brock never uses a Steelix on any of his main series teams.
* In her first battles, all of Roxanne's Pokémon are female. In all subsequent rematches in Emerald, they are all male.

Roxanne (Japanese: ツツジ Tsutsuji) is the Gym Leader of Rustboro City's Gym, known officially as the Rustboro Gym. Trainers who defeat her receive the Stone Badge. She is a scholar who specializes in Rock-type Pokémon.

In the core series games

Roxanne challenging the player

Roxanne appears in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire as the Gym Leader of the Rustboro Gym. She believes Rock-type Pokémon to be rock-solid, and her strategy is to use Rock-type power attacks. She became a Gym Leader so that she could apply what she learned at the Pokémon Trainers' School in battle. She wants to face many new opponents to see them demonstrate how they battle and with which Pokémon. In addition to the Stone Badge, Roxanne gives out TM39 (Rock Tomb).

After Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's Delta Episode, she can also be seen at the Fossil Maniac's cave, begging for a Fossil. She even considers offering him a free Stone Badge in exchange, but quickly restrains herself, despite her desperate desire.

According to the TV show Trouble Talk, she is an expert in Fossils and has been written up in a number of magazines for it. She is also a friend of Steven Stone and joins stone hunting groups with him, according to a stone seller on Route 114.

In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Roxanne appears alongside the other Gym Leaders of Hoenn as an opponent in the Hoenn Leaders Tournament at the Pokémon World Tournament. She also participates alongside the Gym Leaders of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh and Unova in the World Leaders Tournament, and other Rock-type specialists in the Rock Type Expert Tournament.

Main series

Roxanne in the anime

Roxanne is a top graduate of the Rustboro City Pokémon Trainers' School, and now teaches the academy's beginner class. She was granted the position of Rustboro Gym Leader because of her excellent record at the academy, and she allows some of the school's students to undertake internships at the Rustboro Gym.

Roxanne debuted in Gonna Rule The School!. Ash and his friends met her when Max found a lost Poliwag that was soon revealed to belong to the Pokémon Trainers' School. Roxanne then invited the group to the school before Ash's Gym battle. Roxanne admitted that she was going to be busy teaching her students until tomorrow, and promised she would battle Ash the day after.

Ash, Max, and Brock joined Roxanne's students the next day after being invited by the principal, while May studied with the Contest class. Team Rocket arrived and stole the school's Pokémon, but under Roxanne's watchful eye, her students and Max were able to recover them. She then called on her Geodude and sent Team Rocket blasting off.

Afterwards, Roxanne gave Ash the Stone Badge in recognition of his victory.

Roxanne is familiar with Professor Oak, as he gives live remote lectures to the students at the school. She also knew about Brock and the Pewter Gym before she met him, as the Pewter Gym shares her Rock-type specialty.

She reappeared in a flashback in Whiscash and Ash.

Character

Roxanne enjoys fostering young Trainers. She offers them real-life experiences, such as filming her Gym battles and taking her students on excursions. Roxanne values collaboration, confidence, and consideration in her students and earmarks those qualities as critical to a Trainer's success with handling their Pokémon.

Geodude debuted in Gonna Rule The School!, when Roxanne used it to fight off Team Rocket. In the next episode, Geodude was the first Pokémon Roxanne used in her Gym battle with Ash. Geodude easily defeated Treecko with two Mega Punch attacks despite the type disadvantage and Ash's best efforts, since Treecko did not know any Grass-type moves at the time. Pikachu, however, managed to defeat Geodude with Thunder*.

Geodude's known moves are Mega Punch, Rock Throw, and Rollout.

History

Ruby & Sapphire arc

Roxanne is a graduate of the Rustboro Trainers' School and passed with high grades. When Sapphire arrives at the Gym to obtain her first Badge, she is shocked to find that other challengers are just studying. Roxanne explains that due to having so many challengers, she makes people take tests as a requirement to be able to face her. Sapphire reluctantly takes the test as well, but initially struggles due to her poor literacy skills. With help from advisors on how to read certain words, Sapphire manages to pass her test with flying colors, much to Roxanne's surprise.

Roxanne in the thirteenth chapter

When Groudon and Kyogre are awakened, they begin causing droughts and downpours throughout Hoenn.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

Roxanne, along with various people from around Hoenn, is called to Sootopolis City to assist in stopping Grand Meteor Delta, a giant meteoroid threatening to destroy the planet. When the plan to attack Grand Meteor Delta starts, Roxanne and the others have their Pokémon attack the meteoroid at the same time. This, combined with the might of Mega Rayquaza, successfully shatters Grand Meteor Delta into pieces.

Main article: Roxanne (Astral Radiance 150)

Roxanne was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Sword & Shield Series (the Japanese Sword & Shield Era). It was first released in the Battle Region subset before debuting in English in the Astral Radiance expansion, the regular print with artwork by Megumi Mizutani, and the Full Art and Rainbow Rare prints by Sanosuke Sakuma. This card can only be played if ones opponent has 3 or fewer Prize cards remaining. When played, both players shuffle their hand into their deck. Then, the person who played the card draws 6 cards, and the other player draws 2 cards.

One of Gym Badge's illustrations features Roxanne and her Gym Badge.
