Rono was given to Sapphire by her father, [[Professor Birch]]. As of ''[[PS266|It All Ends Now VII]]'', he is at [[level]] 54, and his [[Characteristic]] is that he is "quick tempered."

Prior to the start of the manga, {{adv|Sapphire}} received Rono as an {{p|Aron}} from her father, [[Professor Birch]]. He was present the day that Sapphire and {{adv|Ruby}} were attacked by a {{TP|Zinnia|Salamence}}, but was not used to help fend it off. Rono first appeared at the end of ''[[PS184|Distracting Dustox]]'', as one of the four Pokémon Sapphire started her {{pkmn|journey}} with.

In ''[[PS188|Lombre Larceny]]'', Rono helped rescue [[Mr. Stone]]'s [[Fofo|Castform]] from a water fountain. With his ability to chew through metal, Rono was able to eat enough of the fountain for Sapphire to rip it off and rescue the Castform. It was soon revealed that [[Team Aqua]] was the reason Castform was trapped, and Rono and [[Chic]] were sent out to battle them. Both Rono and Chic defeated their {{p|Sharpedo}} and {{p|Carvanha}}, but took damage from their [[Ability]] {{a|Rough Skin}}. Due to the injury Rono was unable to take out [[Shelly]]'s {{p|Ludicolo}}, but Chic was able to defeat it with help from Castform.

In ''[[PS190|Blowing Past Nosepass I]]'', Rono was Sapphire's first choice against [[Roxanne]] and her {{TP|Roxanne|Nosepass}}. After exchanging an attack Sapphire declares that {{p|Nosepass}} is too strong and decides to switch, but is unable to. Roxanne points out that Nosepass has {{a|Magnet Pull}} and switching Rono out is impossible. Nosepass then attacks with a barrage of {{m|Rock Throw}}s and attempts to finish him with {{m|Rock Slide}}. Roxanne declares the match over, but Rono climbs out of the rubble and attacks. Due to Nosepass being unable to face a different direction than north, it loses its balance when it turns around, allowing Rono to beat it and give Sapphire the victory.

In ''[[PS195|Mashing Makuhita]]'', Sapphire trains Rono and Chic at [[Granite Cave]] in order to prepare for her [[Gym]] battle against [[Brawly]]. After training for most of the day the two [[Evolution|evolve]] into {{p|Lairon}} and {{p|Combusken}}. Sapphire then goes to Brawly and begins their battle. During the battle Rono is sent out against his {{TP|Brawly|Makuhita}} and immediately attacks with {{m|Metal Claw}} and {{m|Iron Tail}}. Using its Jū fighting style, Makuhita easily defeats Rono, and Sapphire recalls him just in time.

In ''[[PS199|Adding It Up with Plusle & Minun II]]'', Rono was used alongside Chic to battle [[Courtney]] and her {{p|Ninetales}}. The two were quickly defeated.

In ''[[PS213|Bubble Bubble Toil and Azumarill II]]'', Rono battled [[Matt]] in a flooded cable car. Matt sends his Sharpedo in to finish Sapphire off and Rono jumps in the way and uses {{m|Iron Defense}}, breaking Sharpedo's teeth. While distracted Sapphire takes the teeth and pierces the glass, removing the water. With the water gone Rono smashes into them with {{m|Take Down}} and sends them flying.

In ''[[PS231|Master Class with Masquerain]]'', Rono, alongside [[Troppy]] and {{p|Donphan|Phado}}, were used in Sapphire's battle against [[Winona]] and her {{p|Masquerain}}, {{p|Swablu}}, and {{p|Beautifly}}. Although Winona's Pokémon prove tough, Sapphire manages to defeat her, earning the {{Badge|Feather}}.

In ''[[PS248|The Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon X]]'', Rono, alongside Ruby and Sapphire's other Pokémon, battled [[Archie]] and [[Maxie]]. Rono was seen being pushed back by Archie's {{p|Walrein}}'s {{m|Sheer Cold}}.

In ''[[PS256|With a Spoink in Your Step II]]'', Rono evolved into {{p|Aggron}} during Sapphire's training on {{gdis|Mirage Island|III}}.

In ''[[PS267|It All Ends Now VIII]]'', Rono battled alongside the rest of Sapphire and Ruby's Pokémon against Maxie and Archie.

In ''[[PS322|Susceptible to Sceptile]]'', Rono battled [[Tucker]]'s {{p|Salamence}} in the [[Battle Dome]]. The match was unseen, but Sapphire ended up losing the battle.

In [[PS608]], Rono was used in a [[Double Battle]] alongside {{p|Gallade|Kirly}} against [[Zinnia]]'s {{p|Goodra}} and Salamence. Salamence was able to attack Rono with {{m|Fire Fang}} but Rono returned all of the damage back and more using {{m|Metal Burst}}. The battle was stopped when Zinnia fled for the rocket that [[Devon Corporation]] launched.

==Personality and characteristics==
Rono is a mischievous Pokémon and loves to play around, though he always listens to {{adv|Sapphire}}. Like Sapphire, he has a love for battling and is very strong. He cares greatly for his {{pkmn|Trainer}}. In battle, Rono is used for his defensive capabilities and tough exterior. He has a love for eating iron.
