Remoraid (Japanese: テッポウオ Teppouo) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Octillery starting at level 25.

Biology

Physiology

Remoraid is a small, light-blue fish-like Pokémon. It has saucer-like eyes, two darker-blue markings on its back and a purple mouth with four pointed teeth. Remoraid has a single pelvic fin positioned like a revolver's trigger, two caudal fins (the bottom one resembling the butt of a gun and the top one being the hammer), two small pectoral fins and a dorsal fin near its mouth, as if a gun's front sight. Remoraid may be a distant cousin of Magikarp and Feebas due to the fact all three are fish-like Pokémon that evolve into completely different sea-creatures (even though Remoraid's evolved form is an octopus while Magikarp and Feebas evolve into sea-serpents).

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Remoraid has the typical abilities of a Template:Type2, but also learns various beam-based moves (Remoraid is one of the few Pokémon that aren't fully evolved to learn Hyper Beam), as well as Bullet Seed, Lock-On, Octazooka and Rock Blast to coincide with its gun-like appearance. Unlike most Water-type Pokémon, Remoraid is capable of using Template:Type2 attacks. The presence of a Remoraid has been known to make Mantyke evolve.

Behavior

Remoraid are well-known for their ability to shoot jets of water from the surface with incredible accuracy - often this is used to shoot bugs out of the air. They tend to travel with Mantine by attaching to its fins. When evolution draws near, Remoraid travels downstream from rivers.

Habitat

Remoraid are sea-dwelling Pokémon.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Remoraid are known to shoot down flying insect prey with precision blasts of water. In addition, they often cling to the fins of Mantine and devour leftover bits of food the larger Pokémon leave behind.

Major appearances

Remoraid first appeared in The Light Fantastic. The Remoraid featured were living in Remoraid Mountain.

Octillery The Outcast! featured Remoraid, as well as its evolved form.

Minor appearances

Remoraid were used as guns in a movie that was shown in Lights, Camerupt, Action.

A Remoraid appeared in Up Close and Personable!.

A shoal of Remoraid appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea.

A Remoraid also appeared in Strategy Begins at Home!.

Trivia

  • The Gunfish enemy that appears underwater in Stage 6 of Pulseman bears a resemblance to Remoraid, as they are both combinations of fish and revolver pistols. This may be on purpose due to the fact that Ken Sugimori designed the characters in this game and also designs Pokémon.
  • Remoraid is the only Pokémon so far that is needed to evolve another Pokémon in the same party. Without Remoraid's presence, Mantyke cannot evolve into Mantine. In the anime and Pokédex entries however, it is shown that Shellder is needed to evolve Slowpoke.
  • Despite its symbiotic relationship with Mantine in previous generations, it does not appear in Mantine's Generation IV sprite.
    • This is the same generation as Remoraid is needed to obtain a Mantine by evolution from Mantyke. However, since Remoraid doesn't disappear from party after Mantyke's evolution, it is only logical that Remoraid is missing on Mantine's sprite.
  • Despite that Remoraid is considered a dweller of deep seas (hence its relationship with Mantine) it is most often caught in small ponds or lakes in the video games. Furthermore, these spots do not actually contain Mantine.
  • Even though Remoraid is classified as the Jet Pokémon, it cannot learn Aqua Jet by any means.

Origin

Remoraid's talent for shooting attacks is similar to an archerfish's. Considering its relationship to Mantyke and Mantine it appears to also be based on a remora. Its shooting abilities, general shape, and appearance make it similar to firearms, more specifically, revolvers.

Name origin

Remoraid's name may be a combination of "remora" and "raid", as in a rapid attack. Alternatively, its name could be a combination of "remora" and "aid", denoting the health benefits of some fish which clean others. Its Japanese name is probably a combination of 鉄砲 teppō, gun—as in water gun—and 魚 uo, fish. 鉄砲魚 teppōuo is also the Japanese name for the archerfish.
