Several wild Pokémon had a recurring role in the Pokémon anime.

Jigglypuff

Main article: Jigglypuff (anime)

The first recurring wild Pokémon in the anime, and the one that made the most appearances, is Jigglypuff.

Jigglypuff's first appearance was in The Song of Jigglypuff. At first it couldn't sing, but that changed once Brock gave it a piece of fruit which soothed its throat. Jigglypuff started following the gang throughout their journey until during the Advanced Generation series. It set a goal to accomplish what it had failed to in the first episode: to have someone listen to its song in its entirety without falling asleep.

Jigglypuff is perhaps best known, however, for its running gag. Whenever it saw that its song put its listeners to sleep, it would inflate angrily, making a distinctive "honk" sound, then doodle over the faces of its audience with its marker.

Snubbull/Granbull

Main article: Madame Muchmoney's Granbull

Snubbull first appeared in Snubbull Snobbery in the possession of a rich woman named Madame Muchmoney, engaged to another Snubbull named Winthrop. She was not happy with her life of luxury, and preferred playing to pampering and Brock's rice balls to gourmet food. Ash and his friends helped Madame to realize this, and so she started making changes just for the sake of Snubbull's happiness. However, Snubbull still felt something missing from her life, specifically Meowth's tail which she loves to bite down on. Thus, Snubbull ran away from home to follow Team Rocket.

Her final appearance was in The Trouble With Snubbull, where she evolved into Granbull and returned to her owner, who had been searching for her since she first left.

Wynaut is a wild Pokémon that followed Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket around in Blackthorn City from Beauty is Skin Deep until Why? Why Not!. Even though it followed them everywhere, Jessie's Wobbuffet and Ash's Bayleef and Noctowl were the only ones to see it. It was voiced by Kayzie Rogers in English.

Spoink first appeared in Pearls are a Spoink's Best Friend. It had lost its pearl, and Ash and his friends were trying to find it. As it turns out, Team Rocket had found it and had traded it to the Magikarp salesman for a Magikarp. After learning this, the kids confronted the salesman and demanded he give back the pearl. Team Rocket also demanded he give them the pearl back as well. In the ensuing battle, Spoink's pearl was returned and Team Rocket was sent blasting off.

It made its second, and final, appearance in Clamperl of Wisdom. Like the previous time, it had lost its pearl. This time, it was lost in the ocean without any way of retrieving it. But the kids learned from a scientist named Isaiah that Spoink's pearls come from Clamperl. Eventually, they found a Clamperl who was willing to give its pearl to Spoink. They said goodbye to Spoink, and it hasn't been seen since that episode.

After losing its pearl, Spoink has a habit of using Psychic to move any round objects (and after a while, even not-so-round objects) on its head, including an angry Electrode, much to the dismay of those around it. It developed a friendship with Ash's Torkoal during its adventures with the group.

Hippopotas made its first appearance in Mass Hip-Po-Sis!, where Ash, with the aid of his friends, rescued the Pokémon from being trapped upon a high ledge. It was then discovered that Hippopotas was lost and he was separated from the rest of the Hippopotas and Hippowdon. Ash and friends helped Hippopotas find his way back to the herd. Like a few other Pokémon, Hippopotas seemed to like to be carried on top of Ash's head.

Jessie had trouble saying the Pokémon's species name; she and her Team Rocket fellows attempted to steal Hippopotas for their boss.

Hippopotas's final appearance was in Sleight of Sand! with his father Hippowdon. In this episode, Butch and Cassidy also wanted to kidnap the Hippo Pokémon.

Hippopotas's gender was confirmed in his first appearance, due to his coloration. Unlike other Pokémon, Hippopotas have completely different colors depending on gender.

Trivia

  • Hippopotas's tendency to use Yawn seems to mirror Jigglypuff's love for Singing.
  • Although Hippopotas weighs 109.1 pounds in the games, Ash has no problem carrying it. This is an example of anime physics.

Sandile made its first appearance in BW003. It, along with a group of other Sandile, caused trouble at the spa resort on Route 1. It was actually trying to save the other Pokémon in the area because it knew that a geyser would soon erupt. Ash, Iris, and the son of the spa resort owner, Dan, helped Sandile save the Pokémon, and Sandile's group leaves.

Sandile appeared again in BW012, where it wanted to battle Pikachu. It randomly attacked with Stone Edge, not caring that there were small children in attack range. It was defeated by a wild Yabukuron who wanted to protect the children.

Trivia

  • So far, all of Sandile's appearances were in episodes written by Hideki Sonoda. They were also the only episodes written by him in the Best Wishes series as of yet.

Recurring Pokémon that have been caught

Three Pokémon that recurred in the anime were later caught by Ash. An Aipom began following the group through the Kanto region, and was caught three episodes later in Channeling the Battle Zone!. He also caught a Gible in Gotta Get a Gible! after helping it to learn Draco Meteor. Later on, Ash caught a Oshawott that followed him from Professor Juniper's laboratory in BW003.
