Ranking is a system used in some of the Pokémon games to create a hierarchy of achievement.

Main series

In the main series Pokémon games, Contests use a ranking system. A Pokémon must win a Contest in each rank to progress in their category. In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Contests of each rank were spread around Hoenn. However, in Pokémon Emerald, they all take place in Lilycove City and in Sinnoh they all take place in Hearthome City. Noticeably, while winning each category at the Master Rank is required for a star on the Trainer Card in Hoenn, only one Master Rank win is needed in the Sinnoh Super Contests.

The amount of rescue points gained from completing a mission depend on the difficulty rating, which in turn depends on several factors, including the type of mission and dungeon in which the mission is to take place. E-rank missions have white letter, D- and C-rank missions have a green letter, while B- and A-rank missions have a blue letter. The following is a list of mission difficulties and the points earned from completing a mission of that difficulty:

Time, Darkness and Sky Exploration ranks

Master Rank is the highest rank in Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness. However, in Explorers of Sky, the ranks from Super to Master are easier to obtain, and four ranks were introduced above it. The highest obtainable rank in Sky is the Guildmaster Rank.

Pokémon Ranger series

Pokémon Ranger

In Pokémon Ranger, all Rangers have a rank that shows their progression in their career, known as Ranger Rank. They begin at Rank 1 and are promoted through good work. In practice, this is awarded after completing each numbered mission. By gaining higher ranks, features of the Capture Styler are unlocked. At the start, only Grass, Fire, Water and Electric Poké Assists can be used, only four friend Pokémon can be obtained at a time and the Partner Gauge for Plusle and Minun's Discharge is at 1. Increasing rank allows for different Poké Assists, more friend Pokémon to be on standby at a time and the Partner Gauge to be extended.

The ability to use the Dragonite Bus is awarded separate of rank but occurs after reaching rank 7 in the game sequence. After gaining much experience, Rangers that show particularly strong abilities can earn the right to take friend Pokémon away from their natural habitats, which happens after the credits in the game.
