Professor Kukui (Japanese: ククイ博士 Professor Kukui) is a Pokémon Professor in the Alola region, a teacher at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island and a major supporting character of the Pokémon anime in the Sun & Moon series.
History
Professor Kukui made his debut appearance in Alola to New Adventure!, where he along with Mallow introduced Ash to the Pokémon School of Melemele Island, of which he is a teacher and later in the episode, Ash decided that he would stay in Professor Kukui's house, while he attends the Pokémon School. In the following episode, he gave Ash the Rotom Pokédex.
He appeared in Trial and Tribulation!, where he referred Ash's Island challenge against Hala.
He appeared again in Young Kiawe Had a Farm!, The Sun, the Scare, the Secret Lair!, Racing to a Big Event!, and Getting to Know You!.
In Rocking Clawmark Hill!, he and Ash found Rockruff come home injured and on investigating found it had been training on Clawmark Hill. After watching Ash train Rockruff, he noticed they had developed a bond and allowed Ash to catch Rockruff.
He appeared in They Might Not Be Giants! in a fantasy.
He reappeared in Crystal-Clear Sleuthing!, where he and Ash's Rotom Pokédex showed an interest in a television show called Alolan Detective Laki (Japanese アローラ探偵ラキ Alola Detective Laki). It was revealed that Professor Kukui even purchased Rotom Pokédex's costume that made it look like the show's titular star, Laki. Professor Kukui tried to help Rotom Pokédex and Pikachu find Ash's missing Electrium-Z and later in the episode, listened in as the Rotom Pokédex tried to solve the case of the missing crystal, until it was discovered that it was in the wig of Rotom Pokédex's costume.
He reappeared in A Guardian Rematch!, where he refereed the battle between Ash and Hiroki and later watched the match between Ash and Tapu Koko.
He reappeared in Partner Promises!, where he was shown at home, with Ash's Rowlet, Rockruff, and Rotom Pokédex, as Ash and Pikachu had travelled to the nearby Treasure Island, by themselves. Later in the episode, Professor Kukui informed Ash about the Guardian deities, since Ash had recently encountered Tapu Lele.
In One Journey Ends, Another Begins..., Professor Kukui was shown with Ash, and sometimes spoke to him, as Ash comforted Litten, who was grieving from its friend, Stoutland, which became severely sick.
Professor Kukui appeared again in A Shivering Shovel Search!, Getting the Band Back Together!, Alolan Open House!, SM025, SM026, SM027, and SM028.
He will appear again in SM030.
Character
Principal Oak is a fairly serious, but happy character. Despite this, he usually likes to add the names of moves into conversations every now and then, much like how Samson Oak uses Pokémon puns. He has been shown to be also break from his serious and calm attitude, as shown in SM017, when he was completely shocked at the notion that Kiawe had stolen Ash's missing Electrium-Z. Like Rotom Pokédex, he enjoys watching the television show Alolan Detective Laki (Japanese アローラ探偵ラキ Alola Detective Laki) and try to figure out who the culprit is during the episode. Much like his use of move names when he talks, he was shown to find it funny that the viewers assumed that the Rockruff which he befriended was actually his. The fact that Professor Kukui befriended the stray Rockruff, when he came upon the Pokémon, who had recently been attacked with Teeter Dance and decided to nurture it, shows that he is also a friendly and hospitable person.
