Professor Cerise's Yamper (Japanese: サクラギ博士のワンパチ Dr. Sakuragi's Wanpachi) is a Pokémon owned by Professor Cerise. Yamper is especially fond of Cerise's daughter, Chloe, and is often seen with her when she is home or at the Cerise Laboratory.

History

Pre-series

As revealed in There's a New Kid in Town!, Professor Cerise received Yamper from a friend in the Galar region, and he soon became a family pet. Yamper arrived before Parker was born and Chloe was only a young child at the time. Chloe became jealous thinking her parents were giving Yamper more attention than her. At one point, Chloe told Yamper that she wished he would go away. Yamper disappeared after this and Chloe went looking for him at a local park, only to be frightened by a group of approaching Venonat. Yamper appeared and scared them off, quickly forming a particularly strong friendship with Chloe.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Yamper first appeared in Legend? Go! Friends? Go!, where he was waiting in front of the Cerise Laboratory to greet his Trainer on her way back from school, but was met with Ash and Pikachu instead. Yamper gave the overly-curious Ash a jolt, but greeted Pikachu amicably with a lick on his cheek before seeing his Trainer, confused by the scene, and following her the Institute.

In Best Friend...Worst Nightmare!, while waiting for Chloe to return from school, the Cerise Laboratory was invaded by a wild Gengar. Yamper immediately sensed Gengar and tried to attack it, but bounced right off it, revealing its presence to Ash, Pikachu, Goh, and Scorbunny. He later helped the boys search for the intruder, using his nose to sniff Gengar out, but their attempts to stop it were ultimately unsuccessful. Shortly after Gengar's escape, Chloe returned to the Institute, and Yamper immediately stopped what he was doing to come to the lobby and greet her.

Unbeknownst to Chloe, however, the Gengar had appeared behind her and launched an Shadow Ball at her, which Yamper quickly intercepted, to her shock. Chloe scooped Yamper in her arms and tried to escape, but Gengar prevented her from escaping, and used its Psychic powers to keep Ash and the others from interfering. Regaining consciousness, Yamper struggled out of Chloe's arms and got ready to battle once more. Professor Cerise, who had just arrived on the scene, commanded Yamper to use Spark, but Yamper did not receive the command. Ren and Chrysa realized that Yamper couldn't hear the Professor because he was single-handedly focused on protecting Chloe, prompting Cerise to tell his daughter to give Yamper the command. Chloe, who had never battled before, hesitated, but soon told Yamper to use Spark, with the resulting attack sending the Ghost Pokémon flying out of the research facility.

In There's a New Kid in Town!, Yamper found a Pidove that had an injured wing and brought it to the house. Chloe and Parker helped it to recover, causing Yamper to become jealous of the attention that Chloe was giving Pidove. Over the two days, Yamper became increasingly annoyed by Pidove, who insisted on riding on his back. Later, a Fearow began to attack Pidove and Yamper protected it, attacking it with Spark while under Chloe's command. Pidove was later returned to its rightful Trainer, with Yamper seeing his new friend off.

Personality and characteristics

Yamper and Chloe

Yamper is normally a friendly Pokémon and appears to feel most comfortable around Chloe, being seen napping belly-up right next to her. Out of the Cerise household, Yamper likes Chloe the most, despite her, at times, distant attitude towards him, and according to her little brother Parker, he only accepts food from her. Yamper is very protective of Chloe and is quick to throw himself at anything that he sees as a threat to her, despite his small size. In Dreams Are Made of These!, he was even ready to fight a Lugia in order to keep her safe, before it was revealed to be a trap set by Team Rocket. In contrast, Yamper seems mostly indifferent towards his actual Trainer, to the point where his family joked that Yamper liked him the least.

Yamper appears to dislike being smothered with affection or having his personal space invaded. In Legend? Go! Friends? Go!, he shocked Ash, who had never seen a Yamper and chased him down to examine him out of his curiosity. This first encounter initially, left Yamper with a bad impression of Ash, as later in the episode, he was seen barking angrily at the exhausted Ash after he returned to the Laboratory with Goh. Though later on Yamper appears to have warmed up to Ash, being less hostile to him. He also seems to dislike strangers, growling and barking at Goh's newfound partner, Scorbunny, in Mind-Boggling Dynamax!. Conversely, he got along with Pikachu immediately, giving him a friendly greeting after shocking Ash and later playing with him while Chloe scolded Goh in the same episode.

Yamper tends to get jealous, as seen in There's a New Kid in Town! when Chloe started paying more attention to a Pidove that Yamper had found injured. Despite this, Yamper protected the Pidove from an attacking wild Fearow.
