The Pokémon Lab (Japanese: ポケモンけんきゅうじょ Pokémon Institute) is a laboratory located on Cinnabar Island. It was founded by Dr. Fuji and only appears in the Generation I games and their Generation III remakes. It is speculated that Dr. Fuji is actually Mr. Fuji.

In the games

On the main division of Pokémon Lab, there is a large reception area, where a portrait of Dr. Fuji, the laboratory's founder, is located on one of the walls. Interacting it results in a surprising reaction from the player character, since the founder shares the name with Mr. Fuji, leading to speculation about them being actually the same person. The resulting interaction text is as follows:

In the first room of the Pokémon Lab, there are two people who will offer to trade Pokémon. In the Japanese Red and Green, international Red and Blue and FireRed and LeafGreen, the old man will offer his Electrode for a Raichu, while the girl will want to trade her Tangela for a Venonat. In the Japanese Blue, he will offer a Graveler for a Kadabra instead, with the girl offering a Slowpoke for a Seel. In Yellow, Golduck and Growlithe can be traded for Rhydon and Dewgong, respectively.

In the second room, there is Move Tutor who will teach Metronome once to one of the player's Pokémon. In Generation I, the man instead gives away the TM containing Metronome, TM35, as Move Tutors were not available back then.

In the third room, there is a scientist who will revive the Fossils the player obtained at Mt. Moon and Pewter Museum of Science in Pewter City. However, the player must walk out of the building before returning to claim their Fossil Pokémon. There is also a third in-game trade: Seel for a Ponyta in the Japanese Red and Green, international Red and Blue and FireRed and LeafGreen, a Krabby for a Growlithe in the Japanese Blue, and Muk for Kangaskhan in Yellow.

A Pokémon Report found in Silph Co. states that Porygon was created by the Pokémon Lab.
