A Pokémon journey is a journey taken by a Trainer to gather gym badges and become the champion of the Elite Four or to collect ribbons and to win the Grand Festival. A trainer can start their journey at the age of 10. That's when trainers can receive their Pokémon license. Before they start their journey, they can choose a starter Pokémon, which can be handed out by a Pokémon Professor of their region or by a Nurse Joy of a Pokémon Center. A trainer may travel alone or be accompany by friends or by people they meet on their way. On their journey, trainers can stay at a Pokémon Center free of charge to rest and heal their Pokémon.

In the games

Each of the main series games chronicles the Pokémon journey of one character. Typically, this is the journey he or she takes to defeat all eight gyms and the become Pokémon League Champion, but over time as the games have become more advanced, there has been a greater emphasis on non-League plots. Every game has a villainous team to overcome, and later games have had optional sidequests such as Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire's Contests, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen's Sevii Islands area, and the Battle Frontier which can be found in multiple games.

While sending ten-year-old children alone on a Pokémon journey is a normal part of life in the Pokémon world, mothers remain understandably hesitant at letting their children grow up.
