Special in non-Korean Gold and Silver on Super Game Boy mode

Special (Japanese: スペシャル Special) is the internal moniker of the second floor of Pokémon Centers in the core series Generation II Pokémon games, which houses the Cable Club, PokéCom Club (Japanese Crystal only), and the Time Capsule. The area is shared with every Pokémon Center and this is easily confirmed by the floor's pink palette that is used when playing the Japanese or Western versions of Pokémon Gold and Silver in Super Game Boy mode (not possible with the Korean versions and Pokémon Crystal as they require the Game Boy Color); whenever the player enters the second floor, he or she is redirected to Special.

Eggs hatched here will have their met or obtained location set to the last location of the player prior to their entrance in Special. This is also the case with the Town Map in the Pokégear, which shows the player's last known location. The Pokégear's phone is intentionally disabled here (the game claims that the player is out of the service area).

It is likely that Game Freak created Special in order to save storage space in the ROM of the games; however, there is unused map data for copies of Special in every Kanto location with a Pokémon Center, suggesting that Game Freak also tested multiple copies of the second floor in every Pokémon Center, an idea they later used in the Generation III games. These unused copies all have but a single warp programmed in, which leads the player back to the respective ground floor, and use both the map header and background music of the location in which they were supposed to be found.

In the localizations of Crystal, the layout was reverted to the one from Gold and Silver. The PokéCom Club warps were left in unused, however.
