Monthly releases

Issue #1: Mysterious Mew

Preceding the release of Volume 1 in North America were five monthly releases containing three rounds each, comprising the entire Volume 1 as well as the first round of Volume 2. These monthly comic book issues were released by VIZ Media between October 1999 and January 2000, followed by the Volume 1 release in April. As a bonus, these monthly releases each contained a sheet of stickers which were not included in the regular volume releases. The following monthly comic book issues were released:

Trivia

  • Despite Red's Poli debuting as a Poliwhirl, the contents page of this volume show Red with a Poliwag.
  • Charmander is shown to have spines on its back on the title page, this is the same as on its Generation I back sprites, but is absent in those of future generations.

Errors

There are a few spelling and grammar errors in the brief description of the second volume.

    • "See Red in his disguise!" is "See Red is disguise!".
    • "An appearance by Mew!" is "An appearans by Mew!".
    • "A mysterious living thing!" is "Mysterious Living Thing!".
