The original Big Four forums were were the boards which had formed the "Anti-Spammer Alliance", and were generally considered to be the largest, most active, and best run Pokémon forums of the day. They were Universal Pokémon Network, Bulbagarden, The PokéMasters, and Pokémon Abode, in the order presented by the original banners.

The term is believed to have been coined only after February 2002, by which time the constituent sites had all died, though all but Pokémon Abode have since been resurrected.

Although there is no consensus on who the current Big Four are, if every (English language) Pokémon forum is considered eligible (rather than just general Pokémon forums in the vein of the original Big Four), then the current Big Four includes Bulbagarden, Serebii.net forums and Pokécommunity, with the final slot most likely being a toss up between Smogon and Pokébeach.
