- Main article: Pokémon food
It probably loves fruit. It seems to have an affinity with the Passho berry, as it is sometimes found with this berry.
In the anime
Phanpy first appeared in Spell of the Unown, however, it was just a Pokémon that Molly Hale dreamed up and made real by the power of the Unown.
Phanpy made its debut appearance in the anime was in Hatching a Plan. It hatched from an egg that Ash Ketchum received in Extreme Pokémon.
Ash's Phanpy made a return to his team and evolved into Donphan in Reversing the Charges.

Trivia
- In Pokémon Crystal, it could learn Water Gun through breeding, probably a reference to elephants. Elephants suck water up into the trunk and then blow it into their mouth. Also, they inhale water to spray on their body during bathing. However, in later games, it can't learn Water Gun at all. It cannot even learn Water Pulse via TM 03.
- Although it is a Template:Type2 Pokémon, it learns no Ground-type moves by level-up.
Origin
This Pokémon is based on an elephant calf.
Name origin
Phanpy's name is derived from the word elephant. Gomazou is probably a combination of 当歳駒 tōsaigoma, yearling, and 象 zō, elephant. Phan obviously comes from elephant so -py might have been added to designate Phanpy's name in the diminutive to reflect its small size and its infantile appearance.
IMDb suggests that Phanpy got its name from the movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence's character "Pompey", with Donphan getting its name from the character "Tom Doniphon".
