Paras is an insectoid creature, with the unique feature of having mushrooms known as tochukaso growing from its back. They grow from spores that are doused on this Pokémon's back at birth by the mushroom on its parent's back.
Paras is an orange, insectoid creature resembling the nymph stage of a cicada. Its ovoid body is segmented, and it has three pairs of legs. The foremost pair of legs is the largest and has sharp claws at the tips. There are five specks on its forehead and three teeth on either side of its mouth. It has circular eyes with large pupils.

Red-and-yellow mushrooms known as tochukaso grow on this Pokémon's back. The mushrooms can be removed at any time and grow from spores that are doused on this Pokémon's back at birth by the mushroom on its mother's back. Tochukaso are parasitic in nature, drawing their nutrients from the host Paras's body in order to grow and exerting some command over the Pokémon's actions. For example, Paras drains nutrients from tree roots due to commands from the mushrooms. The mushrooms are also popular among collectors and have medicinal uses, usually involving extended life. The mushrooms are also the source of its former signature move, Spore.

The anime has shown that Paras can often be found in caves. However, it can also thrive in damp List of Pokémon by habitat. In the Alola region, the mushrooms on its back do not grow well. This thought to be from a lack of moisture or nutrients.

In the anime
Major appearances
A Paras appeared in The Problem with Paras, under the ownership of Cassandra. It is extremely weak, but Cassandra needed it to evolve into a Parasect so she could use its giant mushroom to aid her in her medical research. It did so towards the end of the episode.

Minor appearances
Paras debuted in Clefairy and the Moon Stone, where a group of Paras can be briefly seen removing the mushrooms on their backs. Seymour explained that this behavior was due to someone stringing lights in the caves of Mt. Moon, and implied that this was not good for them.

A Paras appeared in Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village. It was one of the Pokémon in Melanie's care. It reappeared in a flashback in Bulbasaur... the Ambassador!.

A Paras appeared in Pokémon Fashion Flash as one of the Pokémon seen on Scissor Street.

A Paras appeared in A Chansey Operation.

A Paras appeared in The Breeding Center Secret.

A Paras appeared in Pikachu's Vacation as one of the Pokémon seen at the Pokémon Theme Park.

Multiple Paras appeared in Showdown at the Po-ké Corral, where they were among the Pokémon living at Professor Oak's Laboratory.

Two Paras of the List of alternately colored Pokémon in the anime appeared in Poké Ball Peril.

A List of alternately colored Pokémon in the anime Paras appeared in In the Pink as a resident of Pinkan Island.

A Paras made a brief cameo appearance in Tracey Gets Bugged as one of the Bug-type Pokémon on Murcott Island.

A Paras appeared in The Power of One.

A wild Paras appeared in Pikachu's Rescue Adventure.

A Paras appeared in The Fortune Hunters as one of the Pokémon stolen by Butch and Cassidy.

Though tochukaso are parasitic in nature, Paras manages to make use of the mushrooms by creating a semi-symbiotic relationship; the mushrooms draw their nutrients from the host Paras's body in order to grow, and Paras is able to use the mushrooms spores along with its own pincers for self-defense.
A Paras appeared in The Bug Stops Here, where it was chased away by Misty after it scared her.

Paras may have fairly long life spans, because the tochukaso is known for having properties that are beneficial for longevity.
A Trainer's Paras appeared in The Grass Route, where it was seen competing in the Grass Tournament.

The mushrooms on Paras's back are often prized by collectors.
A Paras appeared in Celebi: The Voice of the Forest.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
A Paras appeared in Got Miltank? as an inhabitant of a Pokémon-exclusive oasis.
The mushrooms growing out of its back will release irritating spores that can paralyze, poison, or put to sleep.

Behavior
A Paras appeared in A Bite to Remember.
The mushrooms on its back have a very commanding influence over Paras and order it to extract juice from tree trunks. It is also very timid as shown in the anime when it runs away from a battle with a Ash.

Habitat
A Paras appeared in Destiny Deoxys.

Paras can often be found in caves, since sunlight and dry air hurt their skin. They can also thrive in dank forests with lots of humidity where conditions are ideal for fungi.

Diet
A Paras appeared in the opening sequence of Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.
Pokémon food
It is unknown if Paras eats regular food in the wild or if it gets all of its nutrients from the roots that it sucks, though most of the food is absorbed by the mushrooms on its back.

In the anime
A Coordinator's Paras appeared in Harley Rides Again.

Major appearances
A Coordinator's Paras appeared in Once More With Reeling!, where it was seen participating in the Terracotta Contest.

A Paras appeared in Borrowing on Bad Faith!.

Multiple Paras appeared in Genesect and the Legend Awakened as residents of Pokémon Hills.

A Trainer's Paras appeared in Alola to New Adventure!.

A Paras appeared in Lillie's Egg-xhilarating Challenge!, where it was among the Pokémon playing in Lillie's garden. It appeared again in The Ol' Raise and Switch!.

A Paras appeared in I Choose You!. It was among the Pokémon taking shelter from the rain in a cave alongside Entei.

Minor appearances
Multiple wild Paras appeared in Alola, Kanto!, where they were among the Pokémon seen at Professor Oak's Laboratory.
A group of Paras can be seen briefly in Clefairy and the Moon Stone removing the mushrooms on their backs.

A differently patterned Paras appeared in Poké Ball Peril.
Five Trainers' Paras appeared in A Young Royal Flame Ignites!.

Paras had a small cameo in Tracey Gets Bugged as one of the Bug Pokémon on Murcott Island.
Five Paras appeared in The Power of Us, with four under the ownership of different Trainers and the fourth being wild.

It also appeared in The Bug Stops Here during the Bug-Catching Contest.
Three Paras appeared in Securing the Future!, with two under the ownership of different Trainers and the third being wild. ==Trivia==
Trivia
*Paras's name was originally "Parasyte". The name was probably abandoned because it was also the official English name of an Parasyte
* Early English promotional material for Pokémon Red and Blue listed Paras's name as Parasyte.
*In Generation I, Poison attacks are super effective against Bug, making Paras and Parasect the only Pokémon to have ever had three 4× weaknesses or double weakness to Poison.
* In Generation I, Poison attacks are super effective against Bug, making Paras and Parasect the only Pokémon to have ever had three 4× weaknesses.
*Due to the ability Dry Skin, Paras and Parasect are also the only Pokémon to have a 8× weakness (to Fire).
* No other Pokémon has the same Egg Group combination as Paras and its evolution.
*Paras and Parasect share the same species name with Shroomish and Breloom. They are all known as Mushroom Pokémon.
* Paras and Parasect share their species name with Shroomish, Breloom, Foongus, and Amoonguss. They are all known as the Mushroom Pokémon.
*Paras, Parasect, and Wormadam in its Plant cloak are the only Bugs that also take super-effective damage from Bug attacks, due to their part Grass typing.
* Paras can be seen as a counterpart to Morelull. Both share the Grass type, the same base stat total of 285, evolve at Level 24, both are mushroom-based Pokemon and thus can learn Spore, and both can be found in the wild in Pokémon Sun and Moon, taking the place of the other depending on the time, with Paras being found during the day and Morelull at night.
* Paras' colors on its shiny2 sprite resembles its evolution's colors.
* In the 1.0 release of the English versions of Ruby and Sapphire, the Pokédex entry of Paras refers to it as BUG POKéMON. In the 1.1 release, this was modified to mention BUG/GRASS POKéMON instead. The Pokédex entry in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire says Bug Pokémon like Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire version 1.0, however.
*Paras has teeth or fangs. But in the Generation I sprite it appeared to have a mouth that was frowning.

Origin
Origin
There are many forms of fungus that grow on insects, any one of which could have inspired Paras's design, like the Entomophthora muscae, which grows on the back of the common housefly. As for the insect itself, it bears a resemblance to a cicada larva, more so than Nincada.
On the Origin of Species: Paras and Parasect
The fungus on Paras is identified as tochukaso, an Parasitoid that replaces the host tissue and can affect the behavior of its insect host. The base insect appears to be a cicada nymph (biology).

Name origin
Name origin
Paras's name is a shortening of the word parasite, referring to the parasitic mushroom growing on its back. "Paras" also means "the best" in Finnish.
Paras is a shortening of Parasitism, referring to the parasitic mushroom growing on its back.

Paras (Japanese: パラス Paras) is a dual-type Bug/Grass Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Parasect starting at level 24.

Biology

Paras removing its tochukaso

However, it can also thrive in damp forests. In the Alola region, the mushrooms on its back do not grow well. This thought to be from a lack of moisture or nutrients.

Trivia

 • Early English promotional material for Pokémon Red and Blue listed Paras's name as Parasyte.
 • In Generation I, Poison attacks are super effective against Bug, making Paras and Parasect the only Pokémon to have ever had three 4× weaknesses.
 • No other Pokémon has the same Egg Group combination as Paras and its evolution.
 • Paras and Parasect share their species name with Shroomish, Breloom, Foongus, and Amoonguss. They are all known as the Mushroom Pokémon.
 • Paras can be seen as a counterpart to Morelull.
 • In the 1.0 release of the English versions of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the Pokédex entry of Paras refers to it as BUG POKéMON. In the 1.1 release, this was modified to mention BUG/GRASS POKéMON instead. The Pokédex entry in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire says Bug Pokémon like Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire version 1.0, however.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

The fungus on Paras is identified as tochukaso, an endoparasitoid that replaces the host tissue and can affect the behavior of its insect host. The base insect appears to be a cicada nymph.

Name origin

Paras is a shortening of parasite, referring to the parasitic mushroom growing on its back.
