{{adv|Emerald}} begins to tell {{adv|Ruby}} and {{adv|Sapphire}} of his past - he was orphaned at a very young age, and as a result was moved between relatives where he was routinely ignored and bullied by his cousins as a result of his midget size. He found comfort in the {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} he met at his relatives' homes, however, and they helped him perform various tasks that he could not perform himself due to his short stature. Soon, though, his cousins began to insult him for using Pokémon as tools to make up for his height. Emerald was angered by these insinuations and confronted his cousins, but ended up badly beaten. He then decided to distance himself from Pokémon so no one would ever have the same impressions of him again, and ran away.

Emerald was passed around his various relatives, but their children would just make fun of his small size. The Pokémon there would accept Emerald regardless of his size, and would help him perform various tasks that he could not perform himself due to his short stature. One day, the other children insinuated that he was just using the Pokémon as tools to make up for his short size. This angered Emerald, who tried to fight his relatives, only to beaten up. He then decided to distance himself from Pokémon so no one would ever have the same impressions of him again, and ran away.


At one point, Emerald overheard a couple of scientists arguing as he passed by a river. (It is revealed to the reader that the two scientists were from the {{key|IV|Jade Orb|Green Orb}} synthesis project meant to find a way to control {{p|Rayquaza}}.) The male scientist begged with his superior to continue the project, but she calmly maintained her decision to terminate the project given Rayquaza's escape, stating that perhaps it was impossible to contain Rayquaza. Emerald discovered the discarded Green Orb gem in the river, and became inspired into recreating his image to make himself look more impressive and independent. He quickly sketched some schematics in the sand, detailing many of the gadgets he presently uses - like his extendable arms and amphibious shoes. Unexpectedly, the [[Trick Master]] was passing by and became intrigued by his designs, and the two quickly became friends. Emerald revealed his ability to identify a Pokémon's birthplace - an ability he gained a result of being passed from relative to relative in the [[Hoenn]] region, and the Trick Master decided to help him out by referring him to [[Earl]]'s Academy in [[Johto]].
At one point, Emerald overheard a couple of scientists arguing as he passed by a river. The male scientist wonders if it's really alright to just abandon the project to create the Green Orb, but the female scientist, [[Professor Yanase Berlitz|Professor Yanase]], calmly states that it must be a sign that {{p|Rayquaza}} can't be controlled like {{p|Groudon}} and {{p|Kyogre}}. Emerald soon discovered the core of the Green Orb, which Professor Yanase had discarded into the river. The core inspired Emerald to change his image into one that makes him look more independent.


Upon arriving in Johto, Emerald was disappointed at the poor state of Earl's Academy, but soon noticed that the helper there managed to keep everything together in spite of the horrible conditions. He later learned that the helper was none other than {{adv|Crystal}}, and he quickly came to respect her. Shortly after his arrival, though, Crystal left the Academy, which left Emerald to keep to himself as he saw no other reason for participating in the Academy.
Using a stick to draw in the dirt, Emerald begins designing a new image for himself. To make his legs longer, he will wear platform shoes that can turn into a water ski-like form. To make his arms longer, he will wear fake hands attached to a spring that will increase his reach. To make himself look slightly bigger, he'll comb up his hair higher and grow out his eyebrows. Lastly, Emerald decides to wear the Green Orb core on his forehead. Suddenly, the [[Trick Master]] appears, having gained an interest in the design Emerald created. To everyone's shock, Earl revealed that Crystal had left on a journey to help {{adv|Professor Oak}}, and her efforts had resulted in the financing of the Academy's improvement. Amidst the others' crying, Emerald became more inspired by Crystal's selflessness, and aspired to help her out. He decided that he would have to obtain a Pokédex from Professor Oak in order to be assigned on jobs much like Crystal, and so he went to Goldenrod City in order to request a Pokédex from Professor Oak as he does his radio show.
After learning about Emerald's troubles, the Trick Master decided to put him in [[Pokémon academy|Earl's Pokémon Academy]] in [[Johto]].
