Synopsis
A Sketchy Smattering of Smeargle/VS. Smeargle or Artisan's Cave (Japanese: VS ドーブル VS Doble or アトリエの洞窟 Atelier Hole) is the 314th round of the Pokémon Adventures manga.

The round begins with Emerald changing his shoes into mini skis, and grabs onto a rein thats hooked onto Latios and Latias. He tells the Frontier Brains to follow him as they set out on the open sea, as a flashback sets the stage for the chapter.
Plot
spoilers
The round opens with Emerald hiking up the leggings of his pants to uncover his platform shoes. He leaps into the air and stomps onto the ground, which turns his shoes into a ski-like shape. Emerald leaps into the water, and Eon duo (Adventures) and Eon duo (Adventures) appear holding a rein for Emerald to grab. With the Frontier Brains and reporter following him, Emerald skies over the water, only to ski over a waterfall. The reporter begins remembering what Emerald had told them earlier.

The flashback starts with Emerald showing everyone Jirachi's Pokédex entry and explains that it was the Pokémon that was seen in the sky during the match. The Frontier Brains start to yell at Emerald and say that they have never heard of such a Pokémon and are about to tackle him, when Salon Maiden Anabel stops them and says she's heard about it before. She explains it's a very rare Pokémon that wakes up only once in a 1000 years, and grants the wish of whoever is able to capture it.
In a flashback, Emerald shows everyone Jirachi's Pokédex entry and explains that it was the Pokémon that appeared in the sky. The Frontier Brains get angry and accuse Emerald of making things up, but Salon Maiden stops them by stating that she has heard of Jirachi. Anabel reveals that Jirachi is a wish-granting Pokémon that is only awake once every thousand years. Dome Ace finds the story hard to believe, while Pyramid King points out how anyone who saw it last wouldn't be alive to tell them about it.

Dome Ace Tucker doesn't believe the legend and Brandon mentions that anyone who witnessed it before wouldn't be alive to confirm it. Anabel agrees that few people have heard of Jirachi and believe in its existence, at which she points out that the fact that Emerald's Pokédex was able to display information on Jirachi is proof it exists. Emerald agrees, and states that while he was using the Pokédex to help in finding Jirachi, its location ability works only on regular Pokémon. Explaining that Jirachi had actually landed on Earth during the earlier battle, he starts to take off after it. Just as he's about to leave he's stopped by Tucker who asks if the only reason he challenged the Battle Frontier was to capture Jirachi, to which Emerald states that defeating Battle Frontier is his hobby while capturing Jirachi is his job, and the two just happened to coincide on the very same seven days. Tucker gets angry about the thought that the criminal who stole all the rental Pokémon is still on the loose, and must be captured at once. Greta then realizes that the person who stole the Pokémon may be waiting for their chance to capture Jirachi. Emerald confirms Greta's theory, though Greta reminds Emerald that he is still under suspicion. At this, Emerald suggests that the Frontier Brains follow him as proof of his innocence.
Despite Arena Tycoon still having her doubts, Anabel decides to trust Emerald, as he managed to get data on Jirachi onto his Pokédex. Despite the Pokédex having a tracking system, it doesn't work on Mythical Pokémon. Despite this, Emerald reveals that although it appeared just to disappear again, Jirachi actually just fell to the ground somewhere nearby. Emerald tries to run off and capture it, but Tucker's Salamence chomps on his backside to stop him from moving. Tucker demands to know if Emerald challenged the Battle Frontier to hide his true objective. Emerald replies that conquering the Battle Frontier is his hobby, while capturing Jirachi is a job he was given.

The chapter shifts back to the present where everybody lands on an island containing Artisan Cave. The group enters the cave and are attacked by a large group of Smeargle, and Emerald just bounces pass them choosing not to fight. Todd Snap questions why Emerald doesn't use his weapon that calms Pokémon down, and then realizes that Emerald doesn't like fighting battles just for the sake of fighting - instead, he likes battles that have a set of rules and guidelines, meaning battles against wild Pokémon don't interest him.
Emerald goes on to explain that the time of Jirachi's awakening just happened to coincide with the opening of the Battle Frontier. To clear everyone's confusion, Emerald states that although Jirachi awakens every thousand years, it is only awake for seven days at a time. Tucker gets angry and states that have to find the criminal who attacked Factory Head, not look for a Pokémon. Greta stops him and guesses that it might be possible that whoever attacked Noland might be looking for Jirachi as well. Emerald confirms Greta's theory, though Greta reminds Emerald that he is still under suspicion. Emerald then suggests that they follow him to prove his innocence.

Meanwhile the Frontier Brains are attacking the Smeargle and slowly are pushing their way through the cave, and Todd encounters the Sudowoodo that he had accidentally watered as well as the Dusclops Emerald encountered and calmed in the Battle Pike. The two Pokémon were so fond of Emerald they decided to follow him. The Frontier Brains catch up to Emerald who is found in an open area looking up at a sleeping Jirachi. Jirachi wakes up and spreads out thus causing a huge flash of light, and Emerald takes out his Poké Balls to figure out which one to use, asking Crystal for advice on his PokéGear. Emerald decides and runs toward Jirachi, while a loud clanging is heard and a shadowy figure is seen.
Back in the present, a day after the flashback took place, Emerald, the Frontier Brains, and the reporter approach the location. Seeing how Emerald has control over Latias and Latios causes Anabel and Greta to state that they shouldn't keep their guard down around him. They arrive at Artisan Cave, where they are attacked by a large group of wild Smeargle. While everyone else fights the Smeargle horde, Emerald just jumps over them to avoid the attackers.

The reporter asks why he doesn't just calm them down, and begins to understand Emerald more. He points out that although he loves Pokémon battles, he won't take on everything that attacks him. Due to this, the reporter realizes that Emerald only loves Pokémon battling as a sport. He goes on to state that unlike the other wild Pokémon Emerald had faced before, the Smeargle can't be calmed down since they only attack on instinct. Emerald taunts the Smeargle by stating that he won't fight them, as he has no interest in wild battles.

The reporter decides to follow Emerald and get Jirachi's capture on film. He tries to get away from the battles to go on ahead, but a Smeargle appears and attacks. Suddenly, something knocks the Smeargle away, which is revealed to be the Sudowoodo and Dusclops that Emerald calmed down earlier. Having developed an attachment to Emerald, the two Pokémon help battle the Smeargle. They eventually reach Emerald, who is standing in front of a sleeping Jirachi.

Jirachi awakens and unfolds itself, releasing a blinding flash of light. Emerald steps on the ground, causing a compartment to open in his platform shoes to open and release several different types of Poké Balls. After consulting with Crystal on which to use, Emerald prepares to kick a Timer at Jirachi. Suddenly, a clanging sound fills the cave, and a shadowy figure appears before them.
