The Final Battle VIII (Japanese: 約束の日 Goal on the 80th Day ) is the 267th round of the Pokémon Adventures manga and also the last one in the Ruby & Sapphire arc.

Synopsis

Upon Mimi's evolution, Ruby and Sapphire begin to engage Maxie and Archie in the final battle, easily overwhelming Walrein and Camerupt with their improved combination attack. This forces the villainous leaders to send out four Houndoom and Walrein, prompting Wallace to wonder if the leaders are really planning to finish everything in the battle. However, he soon realises that Archie and Maxie have stolen his aircar. As the villains drive off, they smugly declare that with the orbs still in their possession, they're free to resume their plots whenever they wish to. The Trick Master tries to get in their way, but is easily knocked aside. Ruby and Sapphire decide to use Plusle and Minun's electric energy to stop Archie and Maxie, and the two Pokémon release a powerful blast that catches the aircar in a deadly electrical field.

Ruby asks Sapphire to activate the aircar's shield to protect Archie and Maxie from the electrical field, and decides that the only way to end things is to retrieve the orbs from the villains. Sapphire points out worriedly that none of their Pokémon on hand could possibly surive the electricity, but Ruby reveals a sixth Pokémon he has on hand; a Pokémon that even the Hoenn Pokédex could not identify. Sapphire briefly recalls Ruby taking a similar pose when they met in her Secret Base, and the Pokémon reveals itself to be Celebi. On Mirage Island, Juan realises that the disturbances in time he encountered when moving Ruby and Sapphire on and off the island were due to the Timetravel Pokémon's presence.

Celebi easily passes through the electrical field, snatching the orbs from a desperate Archie and Maxie. Outside, Gabby and Ty witness Sootopolis City sinking back to ground level, indicating the end of the crisis. Ruby and Sapphire are caught in what appears to be a time stream alongside Celebi; Ruby catches glimpses of Courtney, Steven and Norman - people close and dear to him that died in the final battle - before blacking out. The orbs in Celebi's hands suddenly shatter into fragments, leaving unrefined stones behind.

Shortly afterward, Ruby and Sapphire wake up on the Pokémon Association headquarters, where the Chairman thanks them for ending the crisis, alongside the Gym Leaders and the other friends that the two had made over the course of their journey, including Norman and Steven. Ruby is stunned to see them alive; outside, he catches a glimpse of Courtney flying away. He guesses that Celebi placed him in an alternate future, and looking at what used to be Celebi's PokéBall, Ruby wonders if Celebi had joined him in the first place in order to intervene in Hoenn's crisis. Upon meeting with the Pokémon Fan Club Chairman, though, both Ruby and Sapphire realise that they only have one day left to finish their bet. The two beg Norman and Wallace for a gym match and contest respectively, and to their delight the two men agree.

The next day, Sapphire makes her way to her Secret Base, having defeated Norman and claimed all the badges in the Hoenn region, wondering if Ruby was able to win in his Contests. She is happy to be back in her base, but quickly realises that Ruby has filled it up with various decorations without her consent. The boy appears from inside a Tent and reveals that he decorated her base with a wide variety of items from Slateport market, and had claimed victory in the Master Rank contests thanks to the scarves that the Fan Club Chairman gave him - meaning that the bet resulted in a tie with both Ruby and Sapphire fulfilling their goals within the 80-day limit. Ruby begins to groom Sapphire's Pokémon as she stares at him, exasperated that he appears to have nonchalantly forgotten the confession they shared back on Mirage Island; nonetheless, Sapphire is too embarrassed and fails to spark Ruby's memory of the event. The two Trainers eventually head out for Littleroot Town after seeing an interview of Ruby's mother on television, requesting the two of them to come home for their joint birthday celebration.

Various scenes display what happened to other characters. Wanda and Riley continue their relationship; Mr. Briney has become captain of the S.S. Tidal; the Fan Club chairman, Capt. Stern and Dock have recovered from their respiratory problems; Wallace's cheerleaders have remained with Professor Cozmo to assist him and his assistants; Wally returns his PokéDex to Professor Birch and Ruru to Ruby; Flannery reopens the hotsprings at Lavaridge Town due to the rebirth of Mt. Chimney, with Tabitha as a customer; Courtney is seen planting Berries like she used to do for Contests.

Near the scene of the final battle, a mysterious figure retrieves the shattered orbs, and reveals himself to be Giovanni. He beckons to his new underlings, saying there is work to be done, and they leave the scene.
