Onix (Japanese: イワーク Iwark) is a dual-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Steelix when Trade while holding a Metal Coat.

It evolves into Steelix when traded holding a Type-enhancing item.
(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for more details).

Biology
Biology
Physiology
Onix is a Pokémon composed of a giant chain of gray boulders that become smaller towards the tail. Its length makes it the tallest Rock Pokémon. It has black eyes and a rounded snout. On top of its head is a rocky spine. As it grows older, it becomes more rounded and smoother, eventually becoming similar to black diamonds. Inside its brain is a magnet that serves as an internal compass, guiding Onix wherever they need to go and prevents them from getting lost while digging.
Onix resembles a List of Pokémon by body style, with a rocky spine on its head. This Pokémon has a magnet in its brain that serves as an internal compass. Onix's body becomes more rounded and smoother as it grows with age. A fully-grown Onix measures at an enormous 28 feet 10 inches, or 8.8 meters.

Onix tunnels under the ground at over 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour, which causes tremors and a terrifying roar that echoes a long way. Hard objects encountered while tunneling are absorbed into its body, which makes it very sturdy. It also consumes the boulders for food. The massive, winding tunnels it leaves behind are used as homes by Diglett. As seen in the Pokémon Stadium series, Onix is capable of rotating its head, or any part of its body, in a full 360 degrees. It is a very aggressive Pokémon that will constantly attack humans and other Pokémon when in pain, as seen in the anime. As seen in the Pokémon Adventures manga, Onix can be separated from its body segments in battle and be fine later on, either regenerating or reattaching to its body segments. It is said that an Onix that lives for about 100 years will evolve into a Steelix after its composition becomes more diamond-like. It can be found in mountains and List of Pokémon by habitat.

Evolution
Onix evolves into Steelix.

(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Major appearances
Brock's Onix
Starting in Showdown in Pewter City, Brock used an Onix in his journeys in Kanto and Johto before giving it to his little brother, Forrest, for him to training in A Family That Battles Together Stays Together!. At some point before Grating Spaces!, it evolved into a Steelix.

Bruno's Onix
In To Master the Onixpected, Ash and ashfr encountered a giant Onix. It was on a rampage until Bruno managed to pull a Sandslash out from two of its boulders. Bruno captured the Onix afterwards.

Crystal Onix
The Crystal Onix featured a special Onix whose body is made out of glass crystal. Ash and his friends helped a glass sculptor named Mateo search for it because Mateo believed it would help inspire him to be better at his craft.

Other
Onix debuted in Pokémon - I Choose You!, where it was used as the next Pokémon that a Trainer chose after his opponent's Gengar put their Nidorino to sleep with Hypnosis.

In Tunnel Vision, multiple Onix were living in Onix Tunnel. They attacked anyone who attempted to pass through it. They were temporarily put to sleep by Jigglypuff's singing, but were eventually awakened by TRT.

Onix tunnel under the ground at over fifty miles per hour, which causes tremors. If they take a hard enough blow and their body falls apart, they can regrow the rest in a matter of a few weeks. They share this trait with Arbok. As seen in the Pokémon Stadium series, Onix are capable of rotating their head, or any part of their body, a full 360 degrees.

Behavior
They are very hotheaded Pokémon and will constantly attack humans and Pokémon when various objects are caught in its craggy body. However, domesticated Onix will show signs of distress instead of attacking others.

Habitat
In Caring for a Mystery!, an Onix battled a wild Riolu after it accidentally climbed up on it. Ash later showed up with his Pikachu and helped save Riolu from Onix. After that, Ash and Riolu battled Onix until it fled. It reappeared in a flashback in An Adventure of Mega Proportions!.

Origin
Origin
Onix is most likely based on a combination of a snake and earthworm. It may also been based on the wyrm, a type of dragon that has been presented as limbless and burrowing.
Onix's design may be a visual pun on a rock python or an earthworm. Its great size could have been inspired by the Mongolian death worm, an earthworm-like creature noted for its colossal length (compared to regular worms) of up to 7 feet. The Onix lifestyle, living underground and ingesting massive amounts of soil while tunneling, is much closer to the earthworm lifestyle than the snake lifestyle. Earthworms eat soil and digest the organic material it contains (plant matter, living protozoa, rotifers, nematodes, bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms).

Onix (Japanese: イワーク Iwark) is a dual-type Rock/Ground Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Steelix when traded while holding a Metal Coat.

(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for more details).

Biology

Onix is a Pokémon composed of a giant chain of gray boulders that become smaller towards the tail. Its length makes it the tallest Rock-type Pokémon.

It can be found in mountains and caves.

Evolution

Onix evolves into Steelix.

(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Major appearances

Brock's Onix

Starting in Showdown in Pewter City, Brock used an Onix in his journeys in Kanto and Johto before giving it to his little brother, Forrest, for him to train in A Family That Battles Together Stays Together!. At some point before Grating Spaces!, it evolved into a Steelix.

Bruno's Onix

In To Master the Onixpected, Ash and his friends encountered a giant Onix.

In Hello, Pummelo!, Drake used an Onix in the second round in the Orange League championship match against Ash. It battled Squirtle and was defeated.

In Tunnel Vision, multiple Onix were living in Onix Tunnel. They attacked anyone who attempted to pass through it. They were temporarily put to sleep by Jigglypuff's singing, but were eventually awakened by Team Rocket.

In Fight for the Light, Janina coated her Onix in wax for protection against Water attacks.

An Onix, dubbed "King Onix", appeared in Hooked on Onix. Team Rocket tricked King Onix into thinking Ash and his friends were going to destroy his kingdom. When Ash managed to convince King Onix that he and his friends weren't bad by defeating it in a battle, Team Rocket tried to steal the royal Rock Snake Pokémon, but their plan was foiled, as usual.

In Shapes of Things to Come, Roark used an Onix during his Gym battle against Paul. It went up against his Elekid before being defeated by Chimchar. In A Gruff Act to Follow!, it battled Ash and defeated his Turtwig and Pikachu. In O'er the Rampardos we Watched!, during Ash's rematch with Roark, Pikachu was able to defeat Onix.

In A Maze-ing Race!, an Onix rampaged around until it was forced to retreat.

In Expedition to Onix Island!, multiple Onix, including a Shiny one, lived on a deserted island. Ash and his friends went there to see the Shiny Onix.

In Breaking Titles at the Chateau!, Grant used an Onix at the Battle Chateau in a battle against Viola's Surskit, which Onix won. In Climbing the Walls!, Onix battled Froakie during a Gym battle against Ash and was defeated.

Minor appearances

An Onix appeared in a fantasy in Dig Those Diglett!.

In Mewtwo Strikes Back and Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, a Trainer's Onix was defeated by Mewtwo while it was serving Giovanni at the Viridian Gym.

In Showdown at the Po-ké Corral, multiple Onix were living at Professor Oak's Laboratory.

In The Joy of Pokémon, a Trainer's Onix was treated by the Nurse Joy of an unnamed island.

In Meowth Rules!, the Golden Island villagers had an Onix.

In The Power of One, multiple Onix sensed the disturbance caused by Lawrence III.

An Onix appeared in a fantasy in The Rivalry Revival.

Onix can burrow as effortlessly through rock walls as it can through a sea of sand. Other Pokémon make their dens in the tunnels it leaves in its wake.

Evolution data

Onix evolves into Steelix when traded while holding a Metal Coat. Onix cannot evolve into Steelix in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen before the player obtains the National Pokédex, as its evolution will be interrupted. Onix also cannot evolve into Steelix in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, as Steelix is not present in those games. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Onix evolves into Steelix when exposed to a Metal Coat.

Trivia

Origin

Onix's design may be a visual pun on a rock python or an earthworm. Its great size could have been inspired by the Mongolian death worm, an earthworm-like creature noted for its colossal length (compared to regular worms) of up to 7 feet. The Onix lifestyle, living underground and ingesting massive amounts of soil while tunneling, is much closer to the earthworm lifestyle than the snake lifestyle. Earthworms eat soil and digest the organic material it contains (plant matter, living protozoa, rotifers, nematodes, bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms).

Name origin

Onix may be derived from onyx (a mineral).

Iwark may be a combination of 岩 iwa (rock) and either ブルワーク bulwark or スネーク snake.
