Oddish (Japanese: ナゾノクサ Nazonokusa) is a dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon.

It evolves into Gloom starting at level 21, who evolves into Vileplume via Leaf Stone, or into Bellossom via Sun Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Oddish looks like a blue plant bulb with round feet, beady red eyes, and five leaves sprouting from its head.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Oddsh, like many other Template:Type2s, can utilize the sun to become faster in sunlight. Oddish is also able to learn spore-based moves like PoisonPowder and Sleep Powder, and restore health in moonlight.

Behavior

Oddish searches for fertile, nutrient-rich soil, then plants itself. During the daytime, while it is planted, its feet are thought to change shape and become similar to the roots of trees. Oddish grows by absorbing moonlight, and the more fertile the soil, the glossier its leaves become. As only its leaves are exposed aboveground when it is buried into the soil, in order to avoid detection by enemies, it is said to look like a clump of weeds. It is also said to scream loudly if anyone tries to yank it out. Oddish is nocturnal, and awakes upon being exposed to moonlight. Upon awakening, it roams about actively, walking nearly 1,000 feet and scattering its seeds to create more Oddishes.

Habitat

Oddish live in grassy plains, and can also be found in tropical areas such as jungles and swamps, where the ground is rich in nutrients. They are very common, being native to Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and even Sinnoh.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Oddish most likely absorb some nutrients from the ground when they are buried.

In the anime

Two Oddish in the anime

Major appearances

An Oddish owned by Mariah wanted to fly with its Hoppip friends in Foul Weather Friends, even trying to color itself pink like a Hoppip. While it never flies, it still proves powerful enough to defeat Team Rocket on its own.

Minor appearances

Oddish are commonly found in the anime. Most of the time they play the victim and are usually being chased or attacked.

Misty attempts to catch an Oddish in Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village despite not being a Template:Type2 because she thought it was cute. She is prevented from doing so by a Bulbasaur. Misty later apologized to it for trying to catch it while in the Hidden Village.

James's fiancée, Jessiebelle, had an Oddish when she was a little girl, before it evolved into a Gloom and soon after, into a Vileplume.

Oddish is one of Pokémon in the Pichu Brothers' Possé.

An Oddish was used by one of the students of the Pokémon Trainer's School in Gonna Rule The School!.

An Oddish appeared in The Ribbon Cup Caper at the ship’s Pokémon Center.

An Oddish appeared in The Saffron Con as a Pokémon owned by a Coordinator.

Oddish also appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part One.

An Oddish appeared in Camping It Up!.

Trivia

  • In Generation II, Bill's grandfather asks the player to bring him a round, green Pokémon that has leaves growing on its head, which is obviously Oddish. However, in those games, and in subsequent generations, Oddish's body (unless it is Template:Shiny2) is blue.
  • Oddish is the only Pokémon so far to be revealed to have a scientific name: Oddium Wanderus.
  • In Pokémon Platinum, Oddish is the one of the few Pokémon not in the Sinnoh Pokédex, and not introduced in Generation IV, to have a new sprite. Muk, Meowth, Hitmonlee, Ninetales, Primeape, and Registeel are the others.

Origin

Oddish is most likely based on a mandrake.

Name origin

Oddish's name is a combination of the words odd and the vegetable known as radish, although oddish is a word in itself, meaning somewhat odd. Nazonokusa may be taken to mean 謎の草, enigmatic grass.

In other languages

  • German: Myrapla - Probably from mysteriös (mysterious) and plant.
  • French: Mystherbe - From mystère (mystery) and herbe (herb). The whole word sounds very similar to just mystère.
  • Korean: 뚜벅쵸 Ttubakchyo
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 走路草 (Zou Lu Cao) - "Walking grass".
  • Chinese (Hong Kong): 行路草 (Xing Lu Cao) - "Walking grass" in Cantonese.
